Advantages: It's a great little city/town/country car. Its fabulously economic. Disadvantages: No power steering on this particular model.
...going to be something from Volkswagen that I would take much pride in calling my first car.
I began with a Mark 2 Golf Driver. It was nippy, clean, honestly, absolutely rust free, beautiful little car. But it had problems way beyond my pocket and so I moved on.
My dad brought me home a little 1.3 1995 purple Polo. I'll admit it, as sad as it sounds, it was love at first sight, but with Pedro, my name for it, it was never meant to be, he came to ... ...on my way to work.
But as far as safety went in that respect Volkswagens have no fault, I hit a drystone wall at 50 mph, a bit of damage to the front of the car but I was held safely and the car could be driven away. But unfortunately my mum and dad decided that it was to be scrapped. As a poor student, I couldn't afford to repair it anyway.
But about 6 months later, I decided I was ready to drive again. To be honest, it was a mixture of things, ...

---The Car--- I purchased my P reg Polo (1996) just over 12 months ago and can say that she has grown on me. I should also mention that this is my first real car. I did have a M reg Peugeot 106 (an absolute shed I might mention) which I managed to crash within 4 days of passing my test. Oops. ...tired, and seemingly more practical Volkswagen Polo C. I have owned it now for about 12 hours, driven it for about 4 hours and in the wise words of Jeremy Clarkson, it is hateful, hateful (yes thrice) hateful, car.
Why you may ask have I come to this conclusion in such a short space of time? Well, read on a little further and I’ll enlighten you.

Volkswagen score two whole points here!!! Firstly the dash whilst very basic and hardly luxurious is practical and buttons/stalks are well positioned and resist wear and tear well.
Secondly the seats whilst again hardly stylish in their design do tend to have wear ability. Mine despite being a good few years old now still look in tip top condition rather like the dash., and again like the dash I put this down to very tough nylon/vinyl ...

...Polo 1.0litre. I decided on Volkswagen after Id had a lot of trouble with my first car a Peugeot 106, eeevil things wont go there.
Ive always heard that Volkswagens were reliable well built cars though I'd never really taken much notice of them. I needed a small car as Im only 18 and obviouslly petrol prices and more importantly Insurance premiums are a major influence...(If you and not mommy & daddy are paying to keep your car on the road) I looked ... ...I had a look at a range of different mark Polos and decided on the Mk4. Not too dated like earlier mk's and containing more modern equipment too. I looked around and luckily almost immediately spotted a little Racing Green fellow on Autotrader. It was S Reg and had just 37,000 miles on its clock. I was chuffed as it was also only about 30-40 miles from where I live so I rang the number straight away and aranged a viewing.

I have just bought a 1998 Polo and I just love it. Its a beautiful dark blue with grey interior. I know that colour should not be the most important thing in a car but it is - and when combined with everything else my new Polo is just perfect. I must say I was a bit uncertain at first as I thought 1000cc engine was a bit on the small side, but it seems to have enough power for my needs. It whizzes up hills in the Scottish countryside and feels so ... ...to the road as many other small cars.
Everything appears to be of very good quality and well made, nothing tinny or rattley. It feels solid and secure. There are lots of little pockets to store things with plenty of space in the boot, far more than I would expect from a small car. The seats are very comfortable yet quite firm. The windscreen wiper is superb - quite a change from my citreon that had a design fault on the wiper. The wide windows also ...

Advantages: Compact, fuel efficient, value for money, cheap to run & maintain, spacious Disadvantages: Can be a little tough to park (without power steering)
Before I begin this review I would first like to say that I am no expert in cars, I have driven a few but I am not going to go into anything too technical in this review and this review will be based on that perspective.
A LITTLE BACKGROUND
I received my red VW Polo (Nicky) from my parents for an 18th birthday present. I distinctly remember my disbelief on the day, I couldn't believe something that looked so smart and new could be mine. In fact ... ...bunch of people who drove what I would describe as "old bangers" to college every day. In fact my car is a lot older than it looks, at 10 years old it should be beginning to resemble the "old bangers" that I remember from college, but instead I feel that it has aged gracefully, still looking as good to me today as it did then.
WHATS GREAT ABOUT IT?
Ok, so there's not a particular wow factor and your friends are never going to be spectacularly jelous, ...

The VW Polo now comes in new model classifications and they are:
· E, S, SE, Colour Concept, 16V and the GTI
Since the opinion is about the entry model the E, I will stick to that model. The entry model comes with the following engines sizes and 3 or 5-door hatchback:

The fuel consumption figures according to EU Directive 93/116 are:

I wrote a review about this vehicle on this very website in 2004. Now I'm a bit older with a fair bit more vehicle experience I thought I would re write the article. As with any VW you pretty much know what you're going to get. They are solid, reliable, well built, comfortable and generally expensive compared to similar vehicles in the same class. However they also have low depreciation so any likely initial expendature will be made back when you ... ...on the 1.0E in this range however, you also have availible the S and the SE models which encorporate various extras such as Elec windows/air con etc. If you were interested in purchasing this polo I would highly reccomend buying an S or an SE version as the very limited spec on the E can become tiresome after a while. Looks: As with anything, this is down to personal taste, however, I find this version of the Polo as cute as a button. Interior: Nice ...

Advantages: Reliable, Good 1st Car Disadvantages: Some winter problems, price
This is what my first car is. I've owned it since Nov '03. Mine is a 1.0L T Reg in white.
Now this is the cheapest, most basic model there is. So Im going to keep that in mind in this review. Also remember this is my first car so I dont have any other cars to compare it to really.
Anyway on with the review.
Handling wise, the suspension feels a bit soft, I dont have power steering but I've test driven some cars that are alot worse without power ... ...a horrible drive. I can live without power steering on this car, although on alot these models it comes as standard anyway, I was just an unlucky one. When it comes to sharp cornering, its not the steering which is at fault, but rather the suspension. This car has a high centre of gravity and throws you around the car at sharp corners. The car really does need to be lowered 40mm to sort the gravity problem out.
Comfort wise, despite being basic ...

Advantages: Reliable Disadvantages: Lack of features
I’ve had my VW Polo (nicknamed the minty wagon, polo being a mint…..as if I need to explain, you’re all intelligent people!) for just over 18 months now. Okay, so I don’t have the newest version of this little car, it’s an F reg in the good old bread van shape, but it does the job for me! I paid £1300 for it and have had very few problems. It always starts first turn of the key. The automatic choke is the only thing ... ...to early or stick on. Going off too early I can cope with but when it sticks on it has the obvious effect of making my car die and not restart again…..I call out the Green Flag man and by the time he arrives the car restarts no problem! (This has happened to me twice) The only money I’ve had to spend on it has been for tyres and brake pipes along with oil, spark plugs and air filter for its service……stuff which any car is ...

Any parent looking for little Sarah or Jason's first car should give a basic 1.0 Polo serious consideration. They are not the cheapest used cars to buy, but should give a long life; even a 10 year old polo, if well looked after, can be an excellent buy. they are cheap to run (my ten year old still did 40+ miles to the gallon), attract the reduced rate road tax and are in a low-price insurance group. There is an element of safety built in, as the ... ...required. The car is also quite strong and so will stand a bump better than many. The Polo is easy to work on, too; if Sarah or Jason will take a bit of basic instruction, they can carry out regular servicing themselves. Do not be too worried by high mileage, since 150,000 is quite attainable, but do check number of owners and look for signs of rough handling/neglect. ...

Advantages: Reliability, Looks, low depriciation, space, Disadvantages: Not very efficiant (mpg wise)
There seem to be so many confusing reports about this car. From what I have seen so far this place seems to be about regurgitating manufacturers specs instead of actual user reports so that is what I intend to do.
I purchased my Polo in august last year for £5100. A sign of VW's wonderful depreciation is that I can fully expect almost a year later to go out and sell this car for £4500. Looks. As with anything this is going to be a personal thing ... ...the front it looks stunning with the black mesh grilles and from the back with that sloping line which seems to dip forever. Stunning. With the addition of alloy wheels (which improves handling also, will touch on that later) I think my car is absolutely stunning.
Engine.
I have the 1.0E, the engine does not lack, and however being a 1.0 it is by no means the fastest engine about. I have found it to be fine on motorway/city and country driving. ...

Advantages: Well built, looks good, cheap to run, holds value Disadvantages: Not very fast, handling not sporty
Most people will disregard this car because the engine is too small and it is not powerful or fast enough for them, well it doesn't feel that slow to drive, the engine is sweet revving and smooth, and it is low geared, you can pull away from rest perfectly smoothly in 3rd. Out of town if you drive well you can make rapid enough progress, the only time the lack of horses is an issue is when overtaking, or up a steep hill. The advantages are spectacular ... ...you pay £100 per year rather than £150). As you would expect from VW the build quality is very good, although the handbrake came away after a too enthusiastic pull ! it was fixed under the 3 year waranty though (bear in mind Ford and Vauxhall offer only 1 year) The interior and exterior are nicely designed and equipped considering this is the cheapest VW you can buy, high quality light grey plastic and carpets give a lighter impression than the funereal ...

We've had one of these little fellas on the drive for almost a month now. And yes, I'm pleasantly surprised. Having had Volkswagens before I had no hesitation in test driving the Polo 1.0L when I had the opportunity of a relatively cheap one. I'm used to driving more powerful cars, but foud the one litre engine quite nippy. Being over 6 feet tall, the driving position is quite important to me, but I found no problems with the Polo. Economical on ... ...the financial questions were all answered. There is also a reasonably sized boot and enough room in the back for - well I'll leave that to you to work out.
The Polo turns in around 40 miles per gallon and has a 50 bhp engine, 5 speed box, good quality Sony stereo, immobiliser, twin airbags and a tilt and slide sunroof. Possibly the only downside is the lack of power assisted steering. Well, you can't have everything can you? ...

I don't own a Volkswagen Polo but I did rent one for two weeks to drive around Ireland & clocked up 1400 miles. As an ex-mechanic that short time is long enough for me to assess this little car.
Should I be looking for a small car I would have probably short listed the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Micra or Honda Jazz. All fairly cheap to buy, cheap to run, stylish & most importantly, very reliable. The Volkswagen Polo I probably wouldn't have considered ... ...car on the market but it is a very likeable car it s own unique way. The model I had was the latest facelift three cylinder petrol version which was only 4 weeks old. My first impression was the lovely paintwork finish & the even tight gaps around the doors, bonnet & tailgate. The body had a solid feel to it, well made, well constructed & well designed.
Once inside it was easy to get a comfortable driving position as the steering wheel adjusts for ...
