Advantages Advantages Great fun, cheap to run, reliable

Disadvantages Disadvantages Somewhat bumpy ride, finding the right spares can take time

VW Polo 1.3 GT 1983: Pocket Porsche I bought this little silver-metal toy very cheap in 2007 with only 65k on the clock. A recent import from Germany, it had evidently been extremely well looked after by a loving owner through most of its life, and just as obviously spent the last couple of years as a cheap, minimal maintanance daily transport. I have owned quite a few mkII Polos before this, and for some reason the very early models - 82-84 - seem to be much more rust-resistant than later models. This particular car was quite exceptional, even the doors and the rear hatch absoutely rust-free ... more

Advantages Advantages Quick, cheap to buy and insure, fun to drive on the right road

Disadvantages Disadvantages Shoddy build quality, not as reliable as VW should be

I bought a Polo GT 1.3 coupe a year or so ago as I'd wanted one for a while and at the time I'd just earned my second years no claims discount so insurance became affordable. I do like my VW's so I took my time to find the right car and I thought I did, I purchased a 1994 M reg GT that was one of the last that VW, or rather SEAT made, the problem is the mk3 polo (1991-1994) was made in the SEAT factory in Spain and in all honesty it showed. Unlike the Golf's of the same period the build quality was a bit rough, the car rusted and rusted some more particularly down the one side (possible from ... more

    Advantages Advantages cheap

Disadvantages Disadvantages none i can see (i do were glasses though)

I've had my little polo for nearly two years now and find it great fun to drive in any weather. When its cold and there's ice on the road the car seems find the bit of road where there is more grip werid i know but true. If i'm cold i turn the heaters up to full which sounds like a jet but the heat it gives out is amazing it even starts to feel to hot after awhile!. In the hot weather all i need to do is open the window and voila air conditioning! I use my car for getting to school each day which is a 70mile round trip! but this is no problem for the car and a tank of petrol will last me about ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap(ish), reliable, a classic shape

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

I have a 1987 VW Polo CL (think it's a mark 2) and have owned it for five years now. In that time I have covered 25,000 miles and have had no major problems at all. The body is starting to look a bit tired (it's kept on the driveway in all weathers) but the engine just seems to get better as it gets older. It is reasonably cheap to run, reliable, always starts first time in the morning and it is quite fun to drive. The engine is willing and lusty (don't laugh) and is amazingly smooth for a 13-year-old 1272cc four-cylinder. The gearchange is wonderfully smooth (there's only four gears though) ... more

Advantages Advantages cheap to buy, reliable, low tax bracket, cheap insurance.

Disadvantages Disadvantages paint, not so economical with full load

i have owned this car for just over a year. and i love it... nice inside very good quality trim hard wareing and comfy too. loads of space if you put the back seats down. we'll start with the good bits, it is very reliable, and cheap to maintain, VW parts are common as muck so cheap to get hold of. cheap to run. 55bhp on 750kg car it also has potency when required ( although fuel consumption goes right up when i'm driving like a idiot ) cheap on the insurance(£250) and tax(£60) surprisingly roomy i'm 6'2 and have no problems getting in and out. (some other cars i kinda have to slide my knee in ... more

Advantages Advantages small compact car with low fuelling costs

Disadvantages Disadvantages parts-especially tyres quite expensive

This was my first car, and still is. I used the car for learning to drive and felt safe and protected by the sturdy build of the car Although the car is small and compact, it gives a cosy feeling and is comfortable to drive. The interior is impressive and isn't the basic that you might expect from a small car. Boot space is good and the rear seating is ideal for small children. Gives good pulling power for a small engine and is economical in the fuel department. Bodywork has good durability and looks as good as new. Had this car 3 years now and it's eight years old, overall can't have cost us ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cheap to run

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor paint and expensive car insurance

I bought my Polo to originally learn in back in April. It was okay to start off with, but then I didn't drive it for a while. When left to stand Polo's like mine (1995) fade, rust and the battery goes flat. Although my car is 11 years old, its a fantastic runner and since I passed my test I've done nearly 5000 miles in it. It starts first time every time, and warms up quickly. It's easy to drive, and a very enjoyable ride. It's comfy, and easily maintaned. A few points to consider: Red on Polo's fades easily, mines a matt red and takes a lot of polishing, If you buy a 3 door hatch back then ... more
