VW Polo GTi as a 2nd hand Car

Advantages: Nippy for a small engine size, good handling, good build quality, tons of equipment!
Disadvantages: Gearbox bearings can wear between 60 and 80k, pedal box recall, bbs alloys corrode easily.

I bought my W plate Polo GTi in October 2006 and decided to write a review covering what you should look for if you are looking to buy a 2nd hand Polo GTi. I did a lot of research while I was looking for my car and feel that this knowledge could be a great help to others. I'll do the basic information first. The Polo GTi was only ever made in 3 colours, Red, Silver and Black - any other coloured car you may see badged up as a GTi will either be ...
...either a 3 or 5 door and had a subtle bodykit which included a black plastic splitter on the bumper, honeycomb grills, front fog lights, side skirts and a spolier. The car also benefitted from a sports suspension which sat 15mm lower than that of the standard car. Inside, the car had chromed dial surrounds, leather 'GTi' gearknob and steering wheel and sports seats with either a fabric finish or leather with heated front seats. The car came with ...

HANNAH'S HOT HATCH

Advantages: Quick, nippy, good looking and fun.
Disadvantages: Fairly high insurance group and not the cheapest car to run.

...liked very much, but when Volkswagen brought out the Polo GTI I could hardly contain my excitement. I’ve always loved cars and even by the age of 22 I had become bored with ‘normal’ cars and wanted something a bit more special. My main aspiration was something fast – ideally I’d love a two seater sports car, but my tender years made the insurance costs somewhat prohibitive. My second proviso was that whatever it was had to be small and nippy. I rarely ...
...wasted space. Not surprsingly, this meant that my other favourite car genre is the hot hatch. It was this which led me to conclude that I just had to have a Polo GTI! Test driving was really a formality (nevertheless an exciting one!) and within a week the deal was signed and sealed. A month later I was the proud owner of my very own Polo GTI. Firstly, for the purists amongst you, I’ll cover the technical side – in other words, what’s under the ...

More Minty Than A Mini

Advantages: Understated performance, economy, quality finish
Disadvantages: asthmatic turbo

I thought my love affair with the hot hatch ended when my twenties arrived, when girlfriends stopped being overnight conveniences and when - as happens with all men at some point - the size of my car began to be more important than the size of my manhood. The VW Golf GTi 16v was the hot-hatch of choice when I hung out with girls form Essex who left their cheese-string thongs under the passenger seat for my mother to find and then, in my twenties ...
...rather than a nuisance, it was the BMW 3-series that was the car of choice, because it was the one that was most likely to get you in to the knickers of the slender young female sales executive who wore the pinstripe trouser suit and smoked Marlboro Ultra Lights. When I got married and settled down to create a family, it was the urban four-by-four that became the motor to have, so that I could blend in with the Yummy Mummies on the school run. From ...

VW MK5 Polo GTI 2000 - 2001

Advantages: Small, nice to drive, nippy
Disadvantages: expensive to buy, hard to find, poor gearboxes

I fist purchased my MK5 VW Polo GTI back in january of last year and i have become so impressed with the car i decided to write this review. I'll start off with a quick over view of the car.Statistics report that only 3,000 were made. I have not seen this officially reported by VW however. It is reported that 1000 of three colours were made. Red, Black and silver. 500 five door and 500 three door of each colour. So you tend not to see too many around ...
...GTI The MK5 ' can also be known as a 6N2,It was only made from 2000 until 2001. Now for a quick guide to the specification: Xenon Discharge Headlights with automated washer jets Red Stitched GTi Steering Wheel GTi Gearknob GTi "1" Seats 15mm Lowered Suspension 6CD Changer in the boot Heated Rear Window/Heater Electric Mirrors Electric Windows Air conditioning was standard on the 2000 model and later replaced with climate control from 2001 onwards ...

Fun but problematic

Advantages: Fast and Fun
Disadvantages: VW Dealership

Had this car for nearly 5 years now from new. The car is great fun to drive, handles very well and the commute to work is a giggle. Other than a set of super sticky tyres and an sporty air filter the car is stock. It hasn't been plain sailing as it has been back and forwards to VW for a catalogue of problems. First being the clutch went fairly early on and was eventually replaced under warranty. Pedal box recall again done under warranty. Corrosion ...
...up myself as it was due to `fair wear and tear'. Various light have come on and the car has gone into safe mode for no reason. Also had several clutch cables as all models were originally left hand drive and converted for UK market therefore clutch cable takes and unusual routing. VW customer service is an oxymoron and none existent with VW dealers being fairly dire. The interior is fairly well screwed together and comes with all the toys (aircon, ...

My Little GTI

Advantages: Quick, Looks Good, Lots of Extra's, Retaining Value
Disadvantages: Fuel Economy

I fell in love with my little beast when i saw here advertised by the dealer on the website. I drove round that afternoon and as soon as i saw it i knew i was gonna buy it. I was a little worried as i'd had a Golf GT TDI bedfor and didn't tihnk it'd be up to the same spec. As it was a little car i thought it'd feel cheap and stuff. The test drive went well, the car was responsive and handled like a little go-kart, ideal!!! The insurance was cheaper ...
...it was under a grand (i was 22 at the time) You get ABS, CD Multichanger, Climate Control, Electric Mirrors/Windows. The styling on the GTI is awsome, not too much but enough to give it that bit of class. The racing style seats hug you, although i guess for bigger poeple could bea problem. It's quick off the lights, and i've had a ton 30 out of it and it was still going, so there is plenty there up top end. Braking is good to, so you can stop quickly ...

VW Polo GTi 1.6 2001

Advantages: speedy, good looking and economical
Disadvantages: potential gear box problems and pricey parts

I bought my little leo 3 years ago and have loved it ever since. Reasons to love it: It handles like a dream around corners. It is not a Golf! It is unbelievably economical - 330 miles to a tank (if not ragging it!) He feels solid and reliable. The only fault I have found so far............ The gearbox had to be replaced at 100,000 miles and set me back £1200 (huge expense). I am really interested to read that if I had had bearings replaced much ...
...replace it. I have also recently heard a disturbing noise when I slowly turn the wheel (stationary car) and am going to have to take it to the garage to find out what this could be. (it has now done 110,000 miles. I would recommend this car but would advice careful monitoring of the gearbox. AGR ...
