With some trepidation I have decided to once again enter the world of motoring reviews. I have to admit that my technical knowledge of cars is basic to say the least but I do drive the things, more than I want to really so I do have some experience with them which might be useful to other motorists. This is my first diesel car but it won't be my last. It is a company car which I have had from new since July 2001. I have travelled 56000 miles including several 2500 mile round trips to Sweden with my wife, two boys (both under 9) and dog. One of the good points about the car is its economy - a long-term average of over 40 mpg and an indicated 19 mpg at top speed (118 mph!) on the Autobahns. ...seconds - because of the high torque from the turbo-diesel engine it has good overtaking acceleration making it a good motorway and A-road car. It has seven seats but with them all in there is very little luggage space so it is usually driven with the rear two seats removed. i own a 2004/04 vw sharan 1.9 tdi carat (was top of the range - over £20K new) automatic trans with climate, 6cd, alloys, leather interior bought from a vw dealer in 2005 with just 16,100 miles on the clock with FVWSH & 2 owners. now done just under 68K miles, still with Vw full history. looks good, drives & handles well, very roomy but... at approx 20K miles the water pipe that feeds the rear wash wipe decided to come away from the water pump ...
...37K miles the alternator decided one night to fry itself along with the fuse box and part of the wiring loom - nearly a £800 repair with local vw dealer. at approx 67K miles the sharan decided to loss power and became dangerous to drive. the vw dealer found the problem. the air mass meter had failed - a £180 repair. 2 days later after the AMMeter repair the power problem occurred again. the vehicle is still under inspection by the dealer (june 2008) ...

As a family of four, my wife is the main driver of the car, using it for the usual school runs and all other family journeys.(I hasten to add that we car share with our neighbour who has 2 children and occasionally another neighbours child, so generally the car has 5+ passengers for the school runs) We bought the Sharan privately, second hand in 2002 with it having done 75000 miles with 2 previous owners to us. I chose this particular vehicle for reasons particular to me and am aware of its up sides and down sides. ...that has a tape player! I haven't seen one of these since my Golf Estate in 1996. I always assumed they came as standard equipment in most modern cars. Second of course are the seats that need a muscle man to remove let alone carry them any distance into temporary storage. Here again we have a mega manufacturer producing well loved vehicles with ever improved engines yet choosing to ignore their customers pleas for lighter seats or ar least optional ...

I bought this car because i needed more space for the kids and thats exactly what i got. This 7 seater beast is fantastic and every time i go into the car i get a feeling of luxury. The chisis size seems to be alot bigger than a normal car and when you look behind you from the drivers perspective, the car length seems to go on for ever. All 5 seats in the back are completely individual and are all removeable very easily, and i really do mean easily. ...

The wife drives one of these aminly because of the space. We have 4 Kids so its ideal for school drops. Ive also used it to collect large amounts of DIY products. You can take the seats out which is great and the space is amazing. The engine is extremely reliable and this same engine is used in the Passat, Audi, Golf - very popular engine with great economy. It is built very well however the interior dash board is rather boring, but it lights up ...
...The ride is comfortable and the Armrest is a bonus. Plenty of Knobs and Buttons about, but Ive noticed the electric window buttons seem to look worn. Servicing costs of this vehicle can cost alot if you use a VW Dealer, but can have a good reflect on the re-sale value. I would recommend that the Timing Belt is changed at 50k on this engine and a Tensioner is a Must. TB Kit will cost you around £60.00 Mark. A good condition Sharan will not stay long ...

great car i brought a merc v230 before his and the sharan is 100% a better buy, good fuel aconomy with todays fuel prices and the car fully loaded i did 700 miles on £90s of diesel which i thought was very good, the seating arrangment and the ability ti remove all rear seats to create a van type car very usefull to move big items, the two front seats swivel and have aircraft type tables behind them.all rear seats recline and can slide foward and ...
...its needed. the only issues i have found is you can't see the bonet but nothing major and there a lack of storage around the driver and passengers seats and the glove box is'nt very big, the only other complaint is the speedo seem to stop working from time to time only for a few minutes but on the whole one of the best people carriers around. ...

I have owned my Volkswagen Sharon for 4 years now. I have found the Sharan very very economical. The central locking can some times be a bit puzzelling, if you lock the car and leave it, when you come back and turn the key the car locks again. Leaving you wondering if the car was locked at all. I've had a lot of mechnical problems with the car. The two track rod ends have been replaced, the bottom engine mount broke one day, one of the cables came ...
...the gear change from left to right. The car had to be driven home using 3rd and 4th gear only. The most annoying problem is that the Sharan takes at least 4 miles of driven before it starts to warm slightly, leaving it a very cold car for the school run. On the positive side the Sharan is the most economical car that i have ever owned. We drove from Northern Ireland to Holland and Back for 66 euro approx 1200 miles.
