----UPDATE----- 9th Feb 2012I thought I would provide an update as my account with Vanquis Bank comes to a natural end this month (Feb 2012). I have held a Vanquis Bank, Visa Card account since August 2009. I had reservations about them from the beginning having read unfavorable reviews. I would like to share my experience with them and maybe shed some positive light. Vanquis accepted my application with an credit expert score of 653 (poor/fair) as of today 9th Feb 2012 my score has improved on the credit expert scale to 823 (fair/good) which has since allowed me to move back into the ... more

Advantages Advantages Convenient, Accessible to those with poor credit rating

Disadvantages Disadvantages High interest rate and heavy debt collecting if you default

I have been unfortunate in my life to accumulate a number of credit card and loan debts. I have been struggling to pay these for the last four years, although I have now reached a point where things are getting much easier to handle, and the total value of my debt has decreased significantly. When I realised there was a problem, all my credit cards were cut up and returned to the respective creditors. However, this of course left me without a credit card. Initially, this didnt seem to be a problem, as quite frankly I had had enough of them! However, when my bank decided to withdraw my debit ... more

Advantages Advantages Gives credit to those who wouldn't otherwise get it.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Very high interest, terrible customer service.

A couple of months ago we made the mistake of getting a credit card "for emergencies", it was meant to be...but as always happens, it was used when it wasn't necessary (mainly by my husband!!!!). Vanquis Bank are a company who offers credit to people with a bad credit history (i.e. CCJs, missed payments etc and just no credit history). Anybody who has ever tried to get credit for the first time will know its sometimes very difficult, if you have never had any kind of credit given to you, companies won't take you on, as they don't know if your a risk or not...and so Vanquis offer a "credit ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages There are the most evil Sub-Prime credit card in the country - AVOID!!!

Vanquis Bank are absolutely horrendous. Myself and my other half are with Vanquis customers. My OH has been with them for 2 years, applied for the card when he still had some defaults and a CCJ outstanding on his credit report, they gave him a £250 limit and a 59.9% APR. Fine for building credit, we made sure to pay off the balance in full each month to prevent interest being charged, which was good for a short time. Then came the lies, his credit limit was upped to £750 and they said the APR was 39.9%. Then again they upped the limit to £1,500 and they said a Gold card was being issued with a ... more

I requested this review to be added a few months ago as I thought it might be helpful to tell you all about the new latest kid on the block. About 3 months ago, we recieved a mailshot through the post and we opened it. At first we thought it was some sort of junk mail and was about to throw it in the bin. Yet another credit card was appearing on the market, but this one had me fuming and then in stitches at the cheekiness of it. I wondered would I be better off in changing my existing credit card which is low in interest to a new one and not pay charges. The Credit Card is issued Vanquis Bank ... more

    Advantages Advantages Accessibly to most

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not good for people in financial need desperate for credit

I applied for Vanquis card after I was discharged from bankruptcy, primarily for the purpose of rebuilding my credit rating. I have have been using this card for 3 years now. I do all the purchasing solely with this card and use it instead of a debit card. I think there is a lot of unfair criticism of Vanquis card. This card is no more expensive than the best prime cards on the market, if you do what is right, that is pay off the balance in full each month (in fact, it costs you virtually nothing). I think the high initial interest IS justified, as most of the lenders are high risk. I ... more

...but cancel it the moment it is in order! Vanquis card is one of those 'high risks' cards offered by a number of companies. As they are for people with higher than normal chance of not paying up, they are priced accordingly. Some examples are Capital one and Monument Visa from HSBC. I got a mail from Vanquis back in 2005 when they are trailing this credit card in Scotland. It promise a card for someone like me, who have poor/no credit history. I applied for, and got approved for a card, but the catch is there is a £18 annual fee, and an APR of 39.9%! Also my credit limit is set at £250. The ... more

Advantages Advantages Lower interest than parent company Provident

Disadvantages Disadvantages High Interest compared to other lenders, no online banking or online account management.

When talked into taking this card I also got roped into their Repayment Option Plan. This is a big no no if you plan to pay or can only afford the minuim back every month as your balance will never go down. Strange but true as I have noticed first hand that instead of shrinking my balance grows by roughly £2.00 every month. I think you can cancel this plan anytime which I plan on doing along with the card. There is other ways to repair bad credit. This card is not one of them in my opinion. There is plenty of stories about them upping the credit limit but not very many on them lowering the ... more

I applied for a Vanquis Card in December 2009 and at the time had a few defaults and CCJ's registered against me. I applied for the card as I wanted to build my credit back up, plain and simple. After sending off proof of my identity in a pre-paid envelope they provided I received my card at the beginning of January 2010 with a credit limit of £250. I used the card to pay for my normal everyday stuff that Ii would spend anyway and every month I would repay the balance in full. This has cost me NOTHING extra other than what I have spent... Basically a 0% Interest rate!!!! In July 2010 I ... more
