Advantages Advantages Cheap to buy used, economic to run, good quality and decent build, very practical

Disadvantages Disadvantages Bland, not very sexy

After mixed fortunes with some smaller three-door cars (including a SHOCKINGLY unreliable Volkswagen Polo) we decided it was time for a more "grown up" car last September, as we were planning for a family - the first addition to which is now due in July.. Reliability and practicality were the prime considerations - obviously the newer the better - but we were also on a budget, with no more than £2-3k to spend. This naturally ruled out a lot of cars, but one that kept coming back up was the boring old Vauxhall Astra - specifically the Mk4 (or "G") version. This was the second best selling car ... more

Advantages Advantages Nice styling, outstanding drive and handling, good quality interior!!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Finicky new toys, 1.6 lacks real muscle and Vauxhall badge!!

Test Model Vauxhall Astra 1.6 16v SXI Reg no: BF55 FYP UK model RHD Mileage 5912 Actual 0-60: 9.6 Printed max speed: 115 mph Printed economy: 32.8mpg urban Actual economy: 25mpg The new generation Astra has gone through a complete revamp since its ageing predecessor, both externally and internally there are very few features kept from the previous shape. The main improvement overall is the driving experience which has been improved by 80%. The New Astra is a beautiful looking car in sport hatch form and in 5 door form (like the one I tested) is still sporty looking, especially with alloys and ... more

Advantages Advantages goodlooking, sexy, excellent ride ;-)

    Disadvantages Disadvantages common!

~ My history ~ My very first car was a Renault Clio and after a crash on Valentines Day 2005 (which completely wrote it off (oops) and I couldn't believe I had to pay £50 to get them to scrap my little baby! (grr) Because I needed a car to get to work, the search began almost instantly to find another car. I had driven an Astra before and really liked them, I thought they were quite compact but big enough to fit people in without being packed in like sardines. I know I didn't want the bog standard Astra, so I went on the Vauxhall website and started to look at what they had to offer. ~ The Sxi ... more

Advantages Advantages Price, fuel economy, cheap insurance, cheap parts, nice looking

Disadvantages Disadvantages Drab uninspiring interior, basic equipment levels, horrible seat trim, needs the pokier 16v engine

I had this car up until last year. It was a 2001 Mk 4 Astra Club in Metallic dark blue with a 1.6 8v engine. The engine to be honest was a major bone of contention for me, leading to me getting rid of the car and upgrading. The 1.6 8v is the same ageing engine used in the Cavalier and frankly just wasn't good enough in a modern car like this. Carrying on with the bad points, the other major bugbear with this car is the frankly awful interior. One gets the feeling vauxhall deliberatly choose the worse colours to use in the basic Astra, I got horrible grey velour seats (yes the same colour as in ... more

Advantages Advantages Smooth and cheap to insure

Disadvantages Disadvantages Its a British Car

The Model of Car that I have recently purchased is a 02 reg MK4 5 door 1.6i 16V Club Hatchback. It has a max Torque of 100 BHP and is a Multi Point Fuel injected Car with a ECOTEC engine under the bonnet. The Vauxhall Astra runs very smoothly and you can’t even hear the engine running. Since I’ve only had this car for a week then I can only tell you my experiences and they are all good so far. The Features for this car include: - Air-Conditioning - Driver’s and Front Passenger’s airbags - Front Seat Head Restraints - Front Seatbelt force limiters and body-lock ... more

**1.6i 16v Twinport - Easytronic** I got our new Astra 1.6i Elite Easytronic November 2004 on a 54 plate. I didn't think i'd like it as i'd seen pictures and wasn't keen on the back end... thought it looked a little like a Megan... and i hate those cars! The car is a company car so i didnt get to see it before it was delivered and i didnt want to say goodbye to my Audi A3 as i loved it so much. *Colour* I got it in lightening silver... sort of an ice blue tinge to it, gorgeous! a big change from the firery red i had before. It has chrome detail on it and looks amazing! *Size* The car is alot ... more

Advantages Advantages Vey easy to drive, sexy looking car, wonderful road handling, economical

Disadvantages Disadvantages Gearbox is a little bit gritty at time

When I told people i was buying a brand new astra you can imagine the reaction i got: "What do you want one of those for?" or "why you buying a salesman car" were two of the common comments However now I've got my car, how I've shut the doubters up! In sheer terms of looks, this has to be one of the sexiest cars around. Its sports exterior and sexy rear are not the only selling points as anyone stepping inside to find sports seats, leather steering wheel, 6cd multi changer and Digital radio will find. I bought the metallic black version whihc i knew would be a pain to keep clean but has the ... more

Advantages Advantages Good safety, economical, spacious, stylish, 3rd full seat belt

Disadvantages Disadvantages Burns oil quickly, poor rear visability, poor stereo system

This car is one of the best cars my family has ever had. It has a good safety rating according to NCAP. It's very economical. It's very spacious for it's size. Very stylish, lots of street presence a 3rd full seat belt in the back seat instead of a lap belt. The car handles very well, giving the driver a sporty feel. The gearbox has a nice short change and is very precise. The seats are hard but comfortable and the car comes with air conditioning as standard. The car has some disadvanteges but then again so does every car. The rear visability is poor for reversing and the engine burns an ... more

Advantages Advantages Plenty of torque, good handling.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Noisy, poor interior and it's a Vauxhall.

Recently I had the misfortune to drive the new Vauxhall Astra 1.6, it has changed very little in the last five years. My other half has a similar Astra on a `P' plate and there was one or two refinements but not what you would expect after 5 years of development, Vauxhall just appear to be sticking with what they know and are unwilling to experiment. The ride is firm and the car handles better than older Astra's, however the handling is nowhere near as good as certain competitors cars. The torque provided by the Vauxhall engine is as good as ever, consequently for a 1600 it is quite quick and ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages EGR valve can be an issue

I bought my Astra over 2 years ago and I still wouldn't change it… despite being told by my partner to buy a Japanese car… well that was until I let him drive mine… and guess what? Now HE wants to buy an Astra too! OK so what can I tell you? Well before I go on please be sure to note that this is written by someone without a huge driving experience, in fact I have only ever driven 4 cars…A Ka 1.1, A Ford Fusion 1.4 CDTi, A Suzuki Jimny 1.3 and finally the Astra. I aim to rate these cars in relation to one another in the review. The Engine & Driving… Well the Astra by far has the better engine ... more
