Advantages Advantages Reasonably comfortable and spacious interior for passengers

Disadvantages Disadvantages Noisy, shuddering ride, uncomfortable to drive and strange handling!

Before I embark upon this opinion I must just state that this is not my car of choice. I am more of a nippy, hot hatch type of girl – my current pride and joy is a VW Polo GTI – but when I travel anywhere for work I have to take one of the less exciting pool cars, and these happen to be the Vauxhall Vectra LS 2.0 DTS. I have just spent two days driving one of these – a combination of motorway, town and country driving, and am now feeling somewhat inspired to put down my thoughts about the car. As I don’t own it I am not able to fill you in on all the technical specifications myself – but a ... more

Advantages Advantages Big boot and snowflake thingy!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive to fill with fuel

I either must be courageous or an utter fool (personally l think its the latter) cos l am opening my self up for a slating from petrol heads everywhere! Here am l just a simple girly who will readily admit that she knows absolutely diddly squatt about cars (except how to drive them and even then some may argue this point!!). The Vectra. David my partner bought this car about January 2001 for a bargain in a private sale. Previously we had a Renault Clio on a HP deal (please take my advice do not buy a car on such a deal you are being conned big time.) so the move to the Vectra was huge. For me ... more

    Advantages Advantages Economy, space, safety

Disadvantages Disadvantages headlight bulb replacement on the passenger side!

Having read some of the other opinions of this car I felt I had to put finger to keys in defence! I bought my Vectra as a replacement for my Citroen Xantia that was written off in a rear end accident (if you’re interested, my partner posted an opinion on the Xantia ‘So glad it wasn’t mine’). We sat down and identified my key requirements for the new car:- safety, economy, cheap to service and maintain and spacious enough for the four of us. Out comes the Which Car? guide and we quickly whittled it down to a UK manufacturer, a diesel and a family hatch or saloon. As ... more

Advantages Advantages improved looks and better engine

Disadvantages Disadvantages seat comfort and akward handbrake operation.

Having driven an old shape Vectra 2.0 Di for 3 years as a company car I was given the choice between a Rover 45 or Vectra 2.0 DTi for my replacement car in March 2001. The power is much improved in the DTi over the old Di except for standing starts where it seems to be more sluggish until the turbo kicks in. The ABS is useful (as I found out on the M4 a couple of weeks ago). It gives you more confidence under braking and saves on underpants. Load capacity is superb even without dropping the rear seats. Fuel consumption is good (I average approx. 45 mpg with a lot of motorway driving). My main ... more

Advantages Advantages Air conditioning, solid build, smooth drive, spacious.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor after sales service.

After owning the 1.8 old shape Vectra, I needed a change as it rattled so much. I swore I wouldn't buy another. After test drives in many other vehicles I decided to purchase the 2.0i new shape Vectra for many reasons. It doesn't rattle, it feels solid to drive, it is one of the best hatchbacks about for the money. I also opted for a larger engine because I travel abroad with a trailer tent. It tows this with ease. The fuel economy is excellent for a 2.0 and the air conditioning is a must, especially abroad! The only downside was the after sales service for Henly's, please buy one from ... more

Advantages Advantages Spacious and nice looking

Disadvantages Disadvantages Quite noisy and does go through a lot of fuel

Bought one of these cars myself, thinking they looked nice (which they do). Since that day I sort of regret it. It is a nice car, quite fun to drive but can have a lot of problems. A common problem with Vectra's that I found out after the purchase was that they often need a non-return valve fitted to the engine. For no reason at all, and at the most inappropiate of times, you find yourself going out to your car to start it up and it just won't fire up. According to the mechanics the fuel is running back from the engine to the tank, so basically no fuel is available to start it up. I'm not sure ... more

Advantages Advantages Big, big boot. Good on fuel, lots of space for people

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not much space for mobile phone, sunglasses etc, Firm ride, poor visibility, poor drivers comfort

I bought this second hand (11 months old) after owning a new shape Mondeo. I found the driving position ok, however the visibilty is very poor with the A and C pillars in the way all the time (esp. A pillars - can't see traffic lights!!). The ride is too firm and the car really hits potholes hard. On the Mondeo (Zetec) I was expecting the ride to be firm as the Zetec has sports suspension, but on comparision the Vectra is worse. Handling is okay, far better then the last version of the Vectra, grip is superb though and the standard bridgestone tyres are long lasting and allow for fairly sporty ... more

Advantages Advantages get to know your local mechanic

Disadvantages Disadvantages Keep fit by walking everywhere

I've owned a few Vauxhalls, even a Chevette , and also many other different brand vehicles, but the the Vectra was one of the worst cars i have had the misfortune to have ever purchased. It hated to be driven at all, when ever i turned the ignition key the damn thing wouldn't start as the sensors all seemed to go mad at the same time, each sensor must have had it's own sensor to sense it was senseless. When i did manage to get it started it dragged itself along the road as though someone had stolen my tyres whilst i wasn't looking. It cornered like a sherman tank with one track missing and ... more

    Advantages Advantages Well equiped

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Everything else

I found this car to be a great disappointment due its; lack of refinement lack of reliability lack of power and poor handling If you read the specification, it's a well equipped car, with electric windows all round, electric sunroof, climate control, cruise control, radio cassette and 6 cd player, trip computer, heated seats and alloy wheels. Unfortunately, the moment you start the engine, its lack of class and refinement becomes apparent. The engine is both noisy and rough. On the road, its lack of power is a problem. Often a single carriageway road, it just doesn't have the power to safely ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap to run, Roomy

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some common faults that can be annoying

I have owned my Vectra 2.0Dti estate for 2 years 212,000miles on the clock and still going strong there are a few problems ie electric window mechanisms failing this is due to the rubber seals around the window becoming dry and cuasing excessive fricion a bit of lubrication prevents this secondhand window mechanisms are about £30-35 from scarp yard and the non starting problem is a common fault it's caused by the rubber leak off pipes on the injectors cracking and breaking the vacuum seal causing the fuel to drain back to the fuel tank a replacement length of pipe from Vauxhall dealer £12 and ... more
