Advantages Advantages One of the cheapest around, easy to set up, no connection problems, decent connection speeds.

Disadvantages Disadvantages For people with a BT phone line only.

I used to have a Virgin Net PAYG internet-access account, but it was withdrawn due to me not accessing it for a long time. Anyway, I resolved to find myself a monthly-subscription package that included 24/7 net access for a reasonable rate and with someone that could cope with my almost-constant net access at weekends. I have a 56K modem, and broadband access wasn't (and still isn't) available to my little flat, so any introduction of that wasn't important to me - I'll stick to my dialup access for now thank you very much. I had a little surf around the web, and checked Ciao! for ops and ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap 24 hour access

Disadvantages Disadvantages I got cut off after 2 hours and had to re-dial and the customer service was a nightmare

I recently moved from Freeserve to a Virgin account as Virgin is cheaper at only £12.50 per month. At first, I wasn't sure how to pay for the 24/7 service as the Virgin.net website had contradictory instructions. One part said you have to pay by credit or debit card and another said you have to pay by Direct Debit. On further investigation, I found you have to pay the first month by credit card and after that, you can use Direct Debit. The Direct Debit form can be filled in on-line or you can have the relevant forms posted to you. The instructions from Virgin really should be clearer and it ... more

Advantages Advantages Decent Speed, ISDN support, Cheap

Disadvantages Disadvantages Customer services of little help.

...Virgin.net 24/7 will do the job its supposed to. Having used the service since its trial phase many many months ago I can't say I have any complaints about the performance or price. Whether you’re on 56k or ISDN like I now am, the speed is excellent. From decent web servers downloads will generally max out the available 64k to give a nice 8kB/s download speed. A connection can be established at the first attempt anyime of the day. Their homepage is detailed to say the least. Full of information but also covered in advertisements it covers everything you would expect it to; news, travel ... more

    Advantages Advantages relyable

Disadvantages Disadvantages 2 hour cut off

I used to be on a cable phone line, and really wanted to connect to an unlimited access ISP, but, this really difficult on a cable network as most ISP’s require you to have a BT land line, but, I did find one ISP that I really did like called nutshell.net. I was very happy with them, until that is, they suddenly went off line with no warning, and explanation to their customers, then, I found they also took the next three months payment (which wasn’t even due for another month) from my bank. so after a lot of thought, I decided to change to BT, just to get unlimited access I hoped I could rely ... more

    Advantages Advantages Low price

Disadvantages Disadvantages Frequently not being able to dial up

I originally subscribed to Virgin's 24/7 last year (03). For the first couple of months it seemed pretty good, low price, no spam to my e-mail address, however the 'honeymoon period' didn't last, after that it was nothing short of a nightmare. I was unable to connect frequently, even after trying for 5/10 minutes, restarting my PC, checking the phone line was connected properly, then all of a sudden it would allow me to get on. Once connected, the connection was frequently being lost. Another hang up I have with Virgin is when I cancelled my subscription with them to go to another ISP ... more

    Advantages Advantages none

Disadvantages Disadvantages you will not be able to use the internet at peak times with this service

I've had this package for 2 years and it was very reliable and well suited to my needs. Over the last 6 months though the service has deteriorated to such an extent that it is virtually unusable and I've had to switch ISP. The problem is that the server capacity (provided by NTL, shudder) is now completely insufficient. As a result even accessing the internet at peak times (say 4pm to 10.30pm weekdays, all weekend) is hard enough and may take repeated attempts. Once a connection is established the rate will either be pitifully low and/or the downstream response from the server will ... more

Advantages Advantages Not able to view any

Disadvantages Disadvantages Downloading it damaged my password: it's now impossible for me to access Virgin's services.

We had not had any problems with Virgin (except that on the couple of occasions we used their Customer Services we got the impression they weren't terribly interested) until I tried to change to their 24/7 package about a month ago. I followed the instructions on their website, although something seemed to be working wrong - the download page stayed for a very long time and didn't seem to be doing anything. Then I found my password / login didn't work. All that Customer Services have done is repeatedly send me my password / login, telling me the last time they did it. My main concern is that ... more

Advantages Advantages You can surf the internet

Disadvantages Disadvantages High price and tech support

Well at first it was NTL and now its in Virgins hands which means everythings changed. It used to be free phone tech support for broadband and now if you have any difficulty surfing the net you have to ring them at 25p per minute. It doesnt sound much but after your tech support has told you its 25p a minute you have spent £2, and even after that they tell you to unplug the modem and restart the computer, £8, and then they tell you its a fault and an engineer will be out to you by middle of next week and by that time you have spent £15 on the phone. To top it all off they tell you if no one is ... more

    Advantages Advantages None

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Useless back up

Like all ISPs when everything is working, that's great. However when things go wrong as they so often do with Virgin.net you have absolultely no chance of getting a satisfactory resolution to anything other than a very simple and basic problem. The support staff at Virgin.net know nothing and if pressed hard enough for long enough will say that they are pushing your problem up the tree and you will be contacted direct by the relevant authority. However, nobody ever gets back with a solution. Like so many of the so-called service desks, most of the staff have very limited knowledge and will try ... more

    Advantages Advantages Its Cheapish

Disadvantages Disadvantages 15 re-dials to get connected

Hopeless :( Was with BT until they complained about "excessive use" of 205 hours per month, switched to Virgin and the service has been getting steadily worse for the last year, frequently engaged taking up to 15 re-dials to get connected. Failure to connect even after dialling in, sometimes sits for 5 minutes before I can get connected to anyone, Ping test shows no inbound responses. Peak times I can get as low as 31K connections. I use a good quality external modem, results with BT, Freeserve and Ecosse(Callico) are always good connections of at least 45K so it's not the modem or phone line ... more
