...behold I found it. The Vivitar 5385 met all the criteria I had set for the camera I wanted and more. The camera comes with a CD which has the necessary drivers should you be using an older version of windows. It also has some basic photo software to get you started on your digital photography.
So what did I get for my £69.99 from Superdrug..........................a very good deal as far as I'm concerned? The box in which the camera and extras come ... ...camera on the front and a list of specs. Inside the box is 1. The 5 Mega Pixel Camera

...however, i have experience with vivitar cameras before and i knew that they were good for their money. So i decided to buy a 5 megapixel camera and didnt expect too much from them. However, these expectations were soon quashed as i was amazed at how good the camera actually was for the price. Vivitar is not a new name in digital cameras. of course in 2002-03 it had to compete with some leading brands like canon, nikon, sony, fujifulm, etc. it was the time when the digital cameras were of 1.3 to 3 mega pixels and were very costly. Now when i saw this new model of 5 mega pixels and used it, it was really wonderful. The functions were user friendly. The camera has a digital zoom and to be honest, it does not lose the quality till 4x, which is really surprising. and moreover when i get the snaps developed, the color quality was also amazing. Bought this camera around one and a half years ago, has been perfect for family holidays, school trips, evenings out and overall brilliant for those who want good quality pictures. However there are disadvantages, such as the follwing facts: if you turn on the camera once it has no battery it switches off with the lens still open. This is very bad if you do not have extra batteries on you at the time as the lens could easily be scratched. Also the ... ...would recommend buying a camera which you recharge instead of using batteries for. Even using rechargable batteries it does not last as long. Additionally the internal memory on the camera is shokcingly low - it only holds around 6 pictures on the high resloution. I would recommend buying a newer camera. ...

Vivitar would not be a company I would normally go looking at as regards consumer electronics. However at the time I was looking for a cheap camera from a cheap brand. I am a novice in this field and i't didn't feel appropriate at the time to spend a large amount of cash on a digital camera. Advantages: This is a compact easy to use camera with all the features that someone new to digital cameras would find simple to master. Disadvantages: In my opinion only professinal users would find disadvantages. The common to most digital camera faults is the shutter delay, ie you can miss what you actually see by "micro seconds".
I bought my camera after seeing a demonstration on a TV bid channel. My early entry into digital cameras was with a Sony Mavica followed by a Casio 3.1 meg camera. From this experience my advice is if you are buying for the first time to go straight for a 5.0 mega pixel camera.
