1999 Volvo V70

Advantages: Swift, Well Made, Indestructable
Disadvantages: depreciation, service costs

The Volvo V70 estate was brought into the market by Volvo to replace its ageing 850 range. The 1997-2000 V70's boast several exterior improvements over the 850 including reshaped front and side lights, and body coloured bumpers and door handles. We bought our 1999 V70 for about £13,000, though expect to pay up to 5 grand more if you decide to buy through a dealer or specialist. The car is a 2.5L Turbo Diesel, and was our first diesel car. We were ...
...pedal to the metal. Official Volvo stats record the V70 TD getting to 60 in around 8.5 seconds. The car does a little under 40mpg on the motorway, and a little under 35mph when accelerating heavily in towns or in traffic. There is also a lack of the huge black smog cloud that arises from the exhaust pipe of so many other diesel powered cars when they touch the gas. Our V70 came with tinted glass, alloy wheels rear spoiler, and looks like a nice ...

This car does everything !

Advantages: Performance, economy, space, comfort
Disadvantages: Styling, interior, price

...have come to expect from Volvo estates, and the rear wheel arches do not intrude too much. I got a wardrobe in with room to spare, and the low sill means you don't have to do yourself an injury getting stuff in. Clever touches abound, like the blind which hides the boot from prying eyes, yet can be folded quickly away when you want to extend the load area. Although the car can carry almost as much as a barge it doesn't handle like one. The speed ...
...move, yet is light in tight manoeuvres, and the wide low profile tyres give plenty of grip and feedback. The car always feels well planted on the road While the car is hard to fault dynamically the design could leave a bit to be desired. The interior looks and feels a bit plasticy, and the velour seats are not particulary pleasant to look at, and don't look like they would wear too well. It is a comfortable place to spend time however, and all the ...

Fantastic load lugger

Advantages: Space, comfortable driving position and fuel economy
Disadvantages: Wide turning circle

Our second V70 (03/2003 2.4 D5 SE) is not likely to be our last. Volvo's reliability and good after sales service befits the premium brand. The car is supremely comfortable, bags of space and we're never stuck for room lugging golf clubs, dog, baby stuff, etc. Performance is good on the diesel - a definite improvement from the old one (was a 2000 V 2.5 D which was an old Audi A6 engine in fact); much quieter and very gutsy. Best performance is overtaking ...
...economy a bit, but averaging 35-40 mpg and it's a combination of motorway/A road driving. The one detraction is the turning circle is worse than on the old model but this is only a nuisance really in tight car parks. Servicing is £300-ish but no probs yet with the car, as you would expect from such a workhorse. Despite us piling on the miles the interior still appears brand new. New 2 level heated seats are an improvement too on the old model. ...

VOLVO V70 D5 2.5litre SE.2002model This is a superb all round family car.Loads of boot space.Heat/air controls for rear seats.Plenty of cup holders/9v sockets for games/personal stereos etc.Sub woofer pleases the teenagers.Extremely comfortable on long journeys.Heated seats are a real treat in winter.Quick clearing of icy windscreen.Always starts first time.Loads of legroom.Very economical being deisel.Superb road handling/holding.Hot braking system-DSTC ...
...Will always buy Volvo from now on. Width I've only found a problem down country lanes.Parking & 3 point turns can be a bit tedious as long wheelbase prevents slick turning in tight spaces.Seat belt is a little high if you're a bit vertically challenged.(I fitted a strap made for the job from car accessory shop). ...
