...posted this review under the Volvo V70 2.5D by mistake. I have updated the report too.
The car is a 2004 (2005 MY) Volvo V70 D5 S. The D5 is a 2.4 litre "common rail" diesel and the S spec has cloth seats, climate control, fuel computer, and a single CD / FM Radio (which at least has LW for the cricket). Mine has a very light interior (they call it Oak) and the dashboard causes a lot of stray reflections on the windscreen - not good for night driving.
... ...that have been associated with Volvo in the past. It is also not the supreme load carrier that Volvos once were - you get a much bigger load space with a Mondeo.
My V70 has proved to be a very disappointing car with numerous days (24 in 6 months) spent off of the road and too many instances of recurrence of faults, e.g.
- central locking / immobiliser
- sticking tailgate
- bad starting
- random message displays
- loss of entire instrument system

Advantages: Comfortable,easy to drive, economical on long runs, spacious. Disadvantages: Dealer service cost high, turning lock not as good as 240,700 &800 series
I bought a 3 yr. old V70 D5 SE to replace my petrol engined 850 SE 2.5 10v. which was 12 yrs.old.Impressions as follows: comfort greatly improved, turning circle not as good-but can be lived with.Acceleration from start off is not quite the same,but once you are rolling it is superbly torquey, making overtaking easy.After 3 years of trying to make the 850 more economical I could get an average of 31.5 mpg. on a 1,300 m. trip to & around Scotland.This ... ...driving!! - enough said. Performance is more than adequate- if I wanted a sports car I would have got one ! Servicing is less frequent than with the 850, and so far I can only say it does everything I want very well-- would I go back to the petrol powered 850,.....NEVER!!..........................Ivan H. ...

Needless to say being Volvo there is plenty of safety features, with traction control, ABS, side impact protection, and passenger air curtains plus more.
With the V70 you will get a high specification car, with the same features usually costing much more on equivalents such as the BMW 5 series tourer, and with the benefit it is more spacious and versatile and no disadvantages.
If you want a large versatile car, large enough for the whole ... ...run or weekend trip to the tip, plus feel like luxury during the weekly commute to work then the V70 is the one for you.
In my oppinion it should be in the category of luxury cars, and indeed would be if it had a BMW badge on the front. ...

...old car to replace my volvo T4 which was getting a bit old.
I'd always liked the look of this model and decided to go for a diesel as economy should be better without too great a loss in performance.
If you want comy and supportive seats then you need look no further than this, the seats are truly superb. I guess that's one of the reasons so many police forces have these cars on traffic.
The upgrade dolby pro logic stereo is good if you sit in ... ...appalling, far too much bass and voice is difficult to pick out.
As for performance, it is a bit sluggish pulling away but mid range, say 40 to 70 mph it just flies. It makes overtaking a doddle and it's actually very easy to hit the tom without realising it.
Unfortunately, it also is not a cheap car to run. At service time main dealers were looking for over £400 - basically an oil and filter change.

Servicing costs have been as good as could be expected. I normally pay about £220 for a service every 12,000 miles at a Volvo garage. A few minor problems, but nothing serious. Corroded brake disc at 36,000 miles (replaced under warranty). Recurring problems with cargo net and rear seatbelt jamming inside the back seat (hopefully now solved). The ...
