Advantages Advantages High ratings, good facilities, great scenery

Disadvantages Disadvantages The hill, hostility between English + Welsh

Where do I start? Back in late 2004 I had to pick 6 universities to choose from, and obviously Aberystwyth was one of them. Admittedly at the time, Aber was a University just to fill up the remaining spaces. I visited in February 2005, and was very impressed with what I saw. Getting There: 1) Train - Thankfully I didn't travel here by train! The train service in and out of Aberystwyth is absolutely appalling. They run every 2 hours, and consists of 2 carriages (Not wise when you have hundreds of students trying to get in and out!). Takes a good couple of hours to get to Shrewsbury. 2) Car - I ... more

Advantages Advantages Great Location, Good Teaching, It's in Wales, Reasonably Cheap

Disadvantages Disadvantages It is in the middle of nowhere

Background: First some background, I studied Business Studies at Aberystwyth University from 1995 - 1998. Therefore I can comment on the teaching within the Economics, Accountancy and Business courses as well as some German Language and History courses that I took. I am going to break this review down into two, the university and the town life as both are as important as each other should you decide whether to spend the next 3 or 4 years of your life there.. I spent one year on Campus at the University (at the top of the hill) and two years living in the town (which is situated at the bottom ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent quality of teaching and educational facilities, good local amenities, friendly people and all set in stunning surroundings

Disadvantages Disadvantages A tad too small and one or two unwelcoming locals

NO, thankfully not, as the title may suggest, a review of the some what dreadful band Stained I merely refer to the fact that it has been quite some time since I graced the shores of Ciao-land. And by quite some time I mean it was well over a year ago that I last thrilled you ‘all’ with one of my opinions. But now I have joined the ranks of university students that plague this world I figured I would have a lot of spare time on my hands to get back to the serious business of writing reviews on this much loved site. So here I am back and ready to bore. JOY! Now having just become a university ... more

Advantages Advantages It's cheap, Friendly, good teaching/courses

Disadvantages Disadvantages can be hard for a city boy/girl to adjust

I am currently half way through my 2nd year at Aberystwyth (Aber), studying LLB Law, and am thoroughly enjoying it. However, when Aber was first suggested to me to put on my UCAS form I was hesitant. The last time I had been there was when I was about 5 on a weekend trip to Wales, and as I am a city girl, I wasn't sure I could adjust to such a place. To me it seemed a local place for local pople. Anyway September 2003 I found myself in Aber and I lived in student accommodation called 'Penbryn', which is a huge mixed block, which is split into 8 sections. First impressions - the hall is drab, I ... more

Advantages Advantages Everything on one campus, some quite attractive halls

Disadvantages Disadvantages Half the student accommodation is 20 mins walk away in town - almost all of it uphill towards the Uni.

My opinion of Aberystwyth University is likely to be heavily clouded by my experiences there at the hands of one Greek female flat mate (a law student) and her mother. But I'll try to be as objective as I can. I've read some of the other negative opinions and can identify with many of the flaws. I went there in 1998 to study a newly launched course, a Beng in Interactive Multimedia Engineering. I was the first person to sample that particular course's "delights". The first semester of the first year was dedicated to bringing those who had little programming experience up to speed with Java ... more

Advantages Advantages Decent, friendly university in a unique town.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Far away! You'll hate having to leave at the end.

You wouldn't ever call Aberystwyth a world-leader as universities go. It's good academically and respected, but it's a whole different experience from the big city universities. What makes this a great place to study is the smaller size of the university and the friendliness of the people. While some departments are off the main campus, the town and campus are both compact with everything in walking distance once you're used to a few hills. Departments are friendly, and you'll get to know the people quite quickly. After a while, you won't be able to go far before bumping into somebody you know ... more

Advantages Advantages Near the beach, good facilities (mostly), make lots of new friends

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some rooms don't have carpet, lack of washing machines, campus is on top of a VERY big hill

I've just finished my first year here and I feel that I know enough about the university to give my overall opinion of it now. However, my knowledge is pretty much limited to the main campus as there is also Llambaran campus (otherwise fondly called "Cow Campus") a mile down the road (mainly for students who study agriculture as it is extremely rural over there) and the Old College, which is just over a mile away down town, which houses a myriad of classrooms for all subjects. Let's get it on! FACILITIES The university is home to many large (and somewhat intimidating) buildings and perhaps the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Everything

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Nothing

I have just completed my first year at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth studying Geography (Bsc) as a single subject and have enjoyed it immensely. Originally I hadn't planned on going, but it turned out to be the perfect choice, as I settled in really quickly. Aberystwyth students make up half the population therefore creating the perfect student atmosphere because everyone knows each other! Plus strangely enough, there are more English students at the Uni than Welsh. However, I personally believe that the relationship between students and locals is excellent. There is always a great ... more

5 Stars Aber Uni, not quite what you'd expect! Review with images 03/01/2004
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Friendly, good enviroment, great nightlife, excellent teaching standard

Disadvantages Disadvantages The big hill the uni is on, the bus service

Having just finished the first semester at Aberystwyth, and eagerly looking forward to the next, I feel it's a suitable time to give my views on the place as a newbie, and help others who are looking to go there make their decisions. First off, I must say, Aber wasn't my original choice - I started off at Wolverhampton university and changed after a week as I had friends at Aber (however, I’m not writing about Wolverhampton at the moment. eevil place) I saw the head of the department about getting transferred, who was able to help me and got everything sorted within the day. I was officially ... more

Advantages Advantages I love the place

    Disadvantages Disadvantages It's Welsh

I've just got back from Wales and I am so excited about going I could type for pages on the subject, it is absolutely perfect and I love the place, plus I don't have to pass any exams which means in August when everyone is stressed because they don't know where they will be living in September I know that I will be living there and will have a house and everything waiting for me, plus an extra £300 in my bank account for my trouble!! So if you think the scholarship exams are a waste of time you are actually wrong, I do A levels in Maths, IT and Psychology and ended up setting exams in ... more
