Advantages: Funny, easy to read Disadvantages: Not Marian Keyes' best
...Angels, Rachel's Holiday and Watermelon. Watermelon follows the middle daughter, Claire.
The Walsh family are not what you would call ordinary. Margaret, the oldest daughter, fled to Los Angeles after her husband left her, Rachel is a reformed drug-addict, Anna is a drug-dealing hippy and the youngest daughter, Helen, is sleeping her way thorugh her A-levels. They have a gardener who they are too frightened of to sack, and well, it seems the most ...

...wondering about the title, a watermelon is what Claire likens her post-pregnancy body to!

Advantages: an addictive story with great characters Disadvantages: james!
Imagine (if you will) that you are a married woman. How would you feel if your husband announced, completely out of the blue, he was leaving you for another woman?
And, worse, how would you feel if he told you in a maternity ward mere hours after you had given birth?
For that is what has just happened to Claire. Her husband James announces he is leaving within the first few pages of "Watermelon" and her world falls apart. How can something so ...

...books over and over again! Watermelon is probably my favourite book by Keyes. It tells the story of Claire Walsh a young Irish women who finds herself having to return to the family home after her husband leaves her whilst she is giving birth to their first baby.
In true Ketes style Claires life is a disaster! Her family are all absolutley crazy and it is the way that Keyes builds up their characters which makes the book so funny. Anna is a hippy ...

*****MARION KEYES*****
Marion Keyes wrote Watermelon in 1995. I discovered it last year in a second hand book shop. She’s not an author I would have chosen to read, but I stumbled across one of her books and haven’t looked back since.
This book had me gripped from beginning to end. I would definately reccomend you read this book, if you are into a nice bit of soppy romance now and again. ...

Watermelon is a bit of a cliche - a "heartwarming comedy". Claire is abandoned by her husband on the day their baby is born (with the funniest pregnancy/birthscenes since Kathy Lette's Foetal Attraction), and she returns from London to Ireland with the (still unnamed) baby. Her family are (to say the least) crazy - her younger sister is the Rachel of Rachel's Holiday - but they look like the safest place to go. She names the baby Kate after her gran ...

A stiring story Review ofWatermelon - Marian Keyesby
mookielidl
Advantages: see text Disadvantages: see text
...Claire is funny I read Watermelon in almost in one go, which is quite something as it's not a short book. I read it late into the night, until I could read no more, and finally finished it early next morning. Marian Keyes has also written Rachels Holliday which I also liked very much (even better) and which is about one of Claires sisters!
Some people compare this to "Bridget Jones", and they have something in common, but mostly that they are ...

...entertaining and extremely humorous.
However, had Watermelon been my first experience of Ms Keys writing it would have been my last. I am not even sure how the title applies to this book a very vauge allusion somewhere amongst the pages.
Far under par from her other novels, this one struggles to get the readers attention and hold it through the long 614 pages. The storyline is predictable, and somewhat boring. NO surprise twists in this dreary tale. ...

Claire lives in London with her husband James and the story begins with her giving birth to their first child. An emotional and happy time for them both you would think. Instead James tells Claire that he is leaving her for another woman shortly after Claire has given birth. Claire is devastated and decides to move back to her parernts home in Ireland.

a great read Review ofWatermelon - Marian Keyesby
moraghewat
Advantages: great dialogue Disadvantages: bit of a "girly" book
In Watermelon, Marian Keyes introduces us to Claire, a young Irish woman who is left by her husband on the day she gives birth to their first child. Distraught, Claire dashes home to Dublin with her new daughter, to seek solace in the family home. Here we meet the Walsh family who are not exactly the Waltons. The book deals with Claire trying to come to terms with her husband's affair and subsequent desertion. It sounds quite a heavy topic, but it's ...

This was the first Marian Keyes book that I read, and it was enough to turn me into a big fan! It's an extremely funny, well-written, highly addictive novel about Claire (abandoned by her husband on the day her baby was born), her zany family (her younger sister is Rachel of the follow-up novel Rachel's Holiday) and her finding her way out of depression, redefining herself and falling in and out of love.
The book is funny, heart-warming and so ...
