She’s not an author I would have chosen to read, but I stumbled across one of her books and haven’t looked back since. This book had me gripped from beginning to end. Watermelon is a bit of a cliche - a "heartwarming comedy". Claire is abandoned by her husband on the day their baby is born (with the funniest pregnancy/birthscenes since Kathy Lette's Foetal Attraction), and she returns from London to Ireland with the (still unnamed) baby. ...Claire is funny I read Watermelon in almost in one go, which is quite something as it's not a short book. I read it late into the night, until I could read no more, and finally finished it early next morning. Marian Keyes has also written Rachels Holliday which I also liked very much (even better) and which is about one of Claires sisters! ...entertaining and extremely humorous. However, had Watermelon been my first experience of Ms Keys writing it would have been my last. I am not even sure how the title applies to this book a very vauge allusion somewhere amongst the pages. Far under par from her other novels, this one struggles to get the readers attention and hold it through the long 614 pages.The storyline is predictable, and somewhat boring. In Watermelon, Marian Keyes introduces us to Claire, a young Irish woman who is left by her husband on the day she gives birth to their first child. Distraught, Claire dashes home to Dublin with her new daughter, to seek solace in the family home. Here we meet the Walsh family who are not exactly the Waltons. This was the first Marian Keyes book that I read, and it was enough to turn me into a big fan! It's an extremely funny, well-written, highly addictive novel about Claire (abandoned by her husband on the day her baby was born), her zany family (her younger sister is Rachel of the follow-up novel Rachel's Holiday) and her finding her way out of depression, redefining herself and falling in and out of love. This book is such a brilliant read, I literally couldn't put it down! This "chick lit" is full of laughter, love and even some sad times.
