WE ALL HUNT BEARS. Review ofWe're Going on a Bear Hunt - Michael Rosenby
loopymum65
Advantages: Excellent, catchy and memorable story. Disadvantages: None, none, none.
Books, books and more books.
With the exception of my hubby, we are a family of readers. I was raised with a love of the written word, and I have tried, and thankfully succeeded to pass on to my two girls, the sheer joy of slipping into the fantasy world of a book.
Ever since they were small I have read to them, and now they are a little older, (6 & 3), they choose which book they want every night. ( not to mention the half a dozen each during ...

Advantages: Lyrical story and great fun to read out loud. Disadvantages: None - we love this one.
***The Background***
Michael Rosen is the author of this fantastic book, which won the Smarties book prize in 1989. He has written many other children's books and has a knack of making them sound poetic and lyrical in just the right way to keep children enthralled right to the end.
Helen Oxenbury is the illustrator on this book and her beautiful watercolour drawings accompany this simple story perfectly. She has delighted children for many years ...

Squelch Squerch Review ofWe're Going on a Bear Hunt - Michael Rosenby
Mauri
Advantages: Bored proof Disadvantages: None
As all parents know kids are strange infuriating creatures especially between the ages of 2-5. One way in which this strangeness manifests itself is in their fixation with particular items that will send parents slowly but surely insane. Sometimes as was the case with my oldest son, it can be an old moth eaten red T-shirt that they have to sleep with every night, God forbid that we ever mislaid it! Something else that lend themselves to particular ...

Wanna see me bear Review ofWe're Going on a Bear Hunt - Michael Rosenby
alliecat
Advantages: It's lovely Disadvantages: You'll have to read it over and over
I’m absolutely shattered – I’ve yomped through a vast grassy meadow, waded through a wide, fast-flowing river, squelched my way through a massive swathe of mud, fought my way through a dark, tangly forest and battled through a heavy snow storm. FIVE TIMES.
No, I’m not some crazy, outdoors obsessed rambler. No no. I hate the outdoors. I’d much rather curl up on the sofa with a jolly good book. And that’s exactly ...

...going on a bear hunt, We're going to catch a big one"
Off they go, to be faced with different obstacles along the way-grass, mud, a forest, a snowstorm, a cave.
Then they come face to face with the bear "IT'S A BEAR!!!" Children love this bit and when they become familiar with the storyline, they wait for it so that they can have a really good shout!
Oh dear, time to get back home, so off they dash. The pace of the story changes at this stage ...

Bathtub adventures Review ofWe're Going on a Bear Hunt - Michael Rosenby
DiazX
Advantages: simple, fun, dramatic Disadvantages: none, well I suppose it is for kids, but I like it
What is the most exciting thing you’ve done in a bathtub? I can think of a few but I’ll keep them to myself for the moment, but tonight I went on a bear hunt, in fact I’ve hunted bears on the beach, in the car, on trains but mostly its in bed or in the bath.
We’re Going on a Bear Hunt is a gorgeous little book, the first time we encountered it was at the local library, the librarian was reading it aloud to a group of kids ...

Advantages: You will own a wonderful book Disadvantages: none
I want to share with you our favourite family book. We’re going on a bear hunt by Michael Rosen has held the number 1 position as my 2 year olds favourite since he was given it as a present for his first birthday. My other son also loves to read this to his little brother (far too big to admit to enjoying it himself)! This book also passes the parent test– they really enjoy sharing this one! More than can be said for Thomas the tank engine, another ...

...going on a bear hunt. We're going to catch a big one. What a beautiful day! We're not scared" Then they come across the obstacle, the book states what it is eg long wavy grass, it states they can't go over it or under it, they work out they have to go though it. This first phrase and obstacle takes up a beautifully drawn double page, set in black and white. Turning to the next double page, we are now in colour and this double page had the noise that ...

...on a bear hunt - we're going to find a big one!" This is fantastic for kids as they pick up the repetitive style and can pre-empt the lines chanting them with you. Wonderful sound effects are written for parents to embelish as they travel along on their journey.
My son's favourite bit is when they actually find the bear and are chased all the way back through all the obstacles they had already passed through. He makes all the sound effects back ...

Advantages: Large font and simple wording Disadvantages: None
This book is a timeless classic that I, myself, enjoyed as a child and am now sharing that experience with my daughter. We read it at least five times every single day at the moment and even at the young age of 17 months old she copies all the sounds and stomps along with the characters to find the bear. Then she dives for cover once he's found and we have a jolly good laugh as we run for cover! It is one of those stories that ensures so much fun ...
