Money Can Buy You Love!

Advantages: Loyalty, trust, affection, companionship
Disadvantages: Mostly cost

...seen one before! West Highland White Terriers are small, white terriers up to about twelve inches (30cms) in height for a dog, slightly less for a bitch. They weigh about 22lbs (10kgs) for an adult male, a little less for a bitch. Their coats are short and white, coarser on the top and soft underneath. They have pointed upright ears that give them an attentive, alert look and a tail held upright, the shape of an inverted carrot. The fur around their ...
...head. When my Westie shakes her head and fluffs up her fur, I think she looks like a dandelion clock! Although small, they are strong and muscular. They have a life expectancy of fifteen years or more. They were originally bred in the 1800's in Scotland by Colonel Malcolm of Poltalloch from Cairn Terriers and were used for controlling rats and other vermin. That's a very brief description of a smart little dog with a very large heart! If you want ...

...and will be about my West Highland Terrier named Hamish. === What they were used for? === ---------------------------------- West Highland Terriers are more commonly known as Westies and are famous for their white coat. The breed originated from Scotland where they were used to help find foxes and badgers. Hamish is very good at chasing away people when I am walking him and this I think is evidence to the past to what they were used for. === My dog ...
...habit some dogs have. West Highland Terriers are known to suffer from skin conditions. They have fair skin so they are likely to suffer from the simplest of irritations like a flea bite or even something brushing past them. === Caring for Hamish === --------------------- Well I do a lot of stuff for Hamish to make sure he does not have any problems with his health. I clean his ears with a special substance brought by the vet which is this type of ...

Unconditional love

Advantages: Fun, great temprement, loyal, good travellers
Disadvantages: Skin problems, can be stubborn

...a review on owning a West Highland terrier, I made the plunge 12 years ago & it may guide a prospective owner on how to avoid the pitfalls that we didn't know about despite doing research. Firstly some information on this breed of dog: THE BREED: The white West Highland terriers for some reason are often confused with the black Scottish terriers which are about the same size & shape & nicknamed 'Scotties'. The West highland terriers are nicknamed ...
...around. We decided on a West highland terrier based on experiences with my grandmother's dog when I was a small child. This Westie proved to be great with children, behaved very well & was only aggressive to large dogs. At the time we were looking for information on Westies, this was pre internet days so we purchased a guide book on the breed & was informed they had no known health problems. If only we had asked a vet!! We planned to have a Westie ...

wonderfull westie

Advantages: full of character. happy little dogs!
Disadvantages: pure breeds are very pricey

My Westie, Alfie, is now 3 years old, I got him from a breeder when he was 6 weeks old and cost me £200 (he was the runt of the litter and not a full pedigree!). Full Pedigree's generally cost £400+ with females often costing more than the males. As a puppy I never had any problems with chewing, barking when left alone and was house trained very quickly. He instantly got on with my other dog, Shadow a Golden Retriever and loved playing with the ...
...a very stubborn dog, only doing something when if he feels like it and a typical terrier. But has a wonderful character, forever making me laugh with his weird little habits. Which include bringing his lead or bowl to me and chucking them at my feet when he wants him dinner or a walk! He is not 'yappy' as many other terriers are, he only ever really barks when somebody knocks at the door. He loves to play and his toys seem to last him a long time. ...

Westie life

Advantages: Great character, fun loving, loyal, intelligent
Disadvantages: Skin problems, grooming

We have had our little chum for eighteen months, and he is already irreplaceable. Muffin is a male, but with a couple of bits missing, about which more later. We bought Muffin from a breeder near Kidderminster for £350. We chose him from three dogs available. All the bitches from the litter were spoken for. The girls go quickly, because of the breeding possiblities, so if you want one, get to know where a litter is on the way and put your name down ...
...time and choice. All the pups looked fine, and our little man was chosen for his slightly squarer face and slightly shorter nose. Also, when I picked him up and looked in his eyes, he looked away early. This is one indication of a possible gentler nature in the adult dog apparently. Sure enough, Muffin is a smashing natured dog now. He occasionally puts on a grumpy face and sits with his back to us when he can't have his own way, but that's as serious ...

West Highland Terriers.

Advantages: Healthy pedigree, charming, playful, happy to see you, active, intelligent
Disadvantages: Need to be socialised / desensitised early. Often puppy farmed

My experience based on: I had a 13 year old westie who died in January, and am now this week hoping to purchase another Westie pup. Ive researched the breed extensively too. I must repeat everything that you'll find on the internet, "big dog in a small body"... lots and lots of character. My westie when she was younger would run up to challenge and play with much bigger dogs, tease them then run away, that kinda thing. My experience was she was ...
...we did intend to breed her. At 13 yrs 9 months she got a common complaint with unspayed bitches (cant remember the name) but its where the womb begins to leak a foul smelling discharge (yuck!) and they have to have a hysterectomy, she came through this op but didnt recover that week and ended up being put to sleep. The vet did a post-mortem and found she had heart disease. Id noticed she was a bit breathless but blamed old age. Anyway, all that said, ...

Best investment you could ever have

Advantages: fun loving cuddly fluffy companion for life, no better companion
Disadvantages: white and gets muddy and black very quickly!

I got my Westing 7 years ago now and MY OH MY i honestly dont think i would have had such a great funny and eventful last seven years without my westie - called Larsson. Originally we decided on getting a westie when moving to a new bigger house with a decent sized garden so that a dog would be fairly happy with. A westie seem the right choice as it was neither to big or small, i was 12 at the time we got him and my younger brother only 9. This ...

I have found westies in general ( my gran also has a westie) are exeptionally protective of its owners, ...

The best dog I ever had

Advantages: loyalty, fun, brave, intelligent, very protective , good with kids
Disadvantages: I am the BOSS

I had the immense pleasure of having spent 12 years of my life with the loveliest Westie you could come accross. I bought him when I was living in Surrey for £250. He never chewed or destroyed anything in the house nor cried when left alone. When adult he weighed 10Kgs and was the biggest Westie I ever saw. Westies can live up to 15 years of age. He was very brave and sure of himself putting his life in danger to protect. He did not bark unless ...

He was brought up on Eukanuba then having difficulty finding it he went on Royal Canin. Dry food in the morning and in the ...

Westie - a super little breed for all ages.

Advantages: Easy to exersise, friendly, small, the kind of pet you can entrust a child to take for a walk.
Disadvantages: Can suffer from eye and skin problems.

The West Highland Terrier is a very good breed of dog, it is suitable for all ages from children to pensioners. It gives it's owner loyalty for ever. The size of dog is perfect for a small house or flat, and requires only short walks, and playtimes can take place in gardens or parks. I do of course recommend you to buy from KC registered, and avoid "Puppy farmers" like the plague. I have not given a guide price as they vary so much, and do not believe ...
...The breed does however suffer from some ailments. Firstly there are eye troubles, in my case these were soon sorted by my very expert vet, but in some dogs the problem simply does not go away, it is just kept under control. This is the case with the next complaint, namely the skin problems they suffer from. In my case the problem has been made worst due to the fact that my Westie is alergic to steroids, and must not come into contact with any substance ...

Kimble...A small tribute.

Advantages: Just brilliant
Disadvantages: Not one, apart from they die too early.

I recently lost my Westie to old age, her name was Kimble. I still remember the first day we got her, I was 7 years old. We went to a breeder who had 2 Cute 10 week old Westie's to purchase. One was hopping around like man whilst the other sat quietly in the corner. My mum decided to go with the quiet one. For the first few weeks she was very timid, didn't dare go near anyone or anything and was still finding her way around the house. Within a few ...

She loved the beach and although she pretended she was brave, she wouldn't dare go into the water without someone else. She also loved to bark at the cats in our garden, but as soon as you opened the door so she could go and get them she would turn around as if to say 'Aren't you coming?' :) At around 9 Years old she was diagnosed with Diabetes which meant she had ...

Great pet with undeserved reputation for snapping!

Advantages: Cute, cuddly and smart
Disadvantages: Stubborn!

...where we live. West Highland White Terriers or Westie's are small and stocky slightly bigger than cairn or yorkshire terriers. Westie's are very popular and 6 years ago we paid £300 so this probably has gone up by now. My Westie was bought primarily because I suffer from allergies to many kinds of fur and I was told that as Westie's practically do not molt and their fur is very course I would not have any problems and this turned out to be very true ...
...don't take my word for it, see if you can spend some time with a Westie). Westie's are completely white and mine is 100% pet and was never intended for showing. This is just as well as she is very stubborn and loves to be boss of you (in a cute way)! She loves to please and although she can be grumpy as can anyone, she is never remotely snappy. As a terrier Westie's have a very undeserved reputation for being snappy. Holly is a complete lap dog ...

MY WESTIE, MY LOVE

Advantages: Sweet disposition, cuddly personality, great with other animals, no shedding
Disadvantages: Haven't seen one yet!

We inherited our Westie. He had belonged to our son, but Jason became overwhelmed, as he had two other rather large dogs, and so Wally (Wallace - named for the hero of Braveheart as my husband is Scottish) came to live with us. Ah, that was my lucky day. WALLY BECAME MINE COMPLETELY. He follows me everywhere. He snuggles close to me at night, making my sleep so restful and induces the most wonderful dreams. He frolics and plays and carries on long ...
...that Wally can hear our car four blocks away when he knows that I am returning from work. He has learned to live with our two cats, but every once in a while takes a notion to chase them. He adores our other dog, Tilly, a papillon. All in all, I wouldn't trade him for a king's ransom. Peter and I have had many dogs during our 42 year marriage, and Wally is one of the three best (the other two being an Airedale named Sally and a Lhsa Apso called Buffy). ...

Mad Max

Advantages: Lovable and friendly
Disadvantages: grumpy at times

Our Westie, Max, is now 4 - we paid about £350 for him from a breeder - he has been a bundle of fun since we brought him home and he is a great family dog. He does have a tendancy to being grumpy now and then, and gives out a sort of grunt to let you know he wants to be left alone. I have known him be jealous on occasions, especially when there are small children around. He does need to go to the groomers about once every 2 to 3 months, just to ...
...at our expense of about £20 - He gets very excited when it's time for a walk, he seems to sense when this is - he also loves to go in my car and stick his head out of the window, which does look comical at times !! All in all, Westies are lovely animals - they have lots of love to give and just like humans, they get a bit grumpy now and then, but soon come out of it. by Lezann ...

A big dog stuck in a small suit!

Advantages: extremely loving and loyal
Disadvantages: tend to wee up peoples legs if they stand still too long! (Remedied by the 'snip'!)

I have a two year old Westie called Hamish. He likes to play with the big boys, his best friends being a Lurcher and a Rottweiller! Westies definately think of themselves as big dogs! They are very good with children, very patient and placid and will put up with quite a bit of pulling around! They are always ready for a long walk and enjoy socialising with other dogs as well as humans! When choosing which breed of dog would be best for us, the Westie ...
...and hardly moult at all! Prices vary around the country and on their pedigree, Hamish cost £350 which seems to be pretty average. Their lovely white coat needs to be cut roughly every 6 - 8 weeks to keep them looking at their best, this costs in the region of £25.00 and includes a wash and blow dry with nails clipped and ears cleaned! It is best not to bathe them too often as their skin can be prone to excema and therefore could be dried out by ...
