Now WHAT CAR shall I buy

Advantages: Great in-depth information on cars
Disadvantages: Maybe should have a sports section

...to read and it’s called What Car? (For all you people who haven’t read the category) I never used to read What Car? or Auto Express but I used to read a magazine called Complete Car. I found some the other day and I still think they were good (I got my name in their once). But they merged with Autocar and so dropped in my estimation. I tried Carweek but that mysteriously went defunct. This then led me onto Auto Express, the weekly mag, ...
...I have a pile of What Cars? piling up on ,my bedroom floor. So as I tidy them up (eg, throw then in my wardrobe), I thought I’d better write an op, so as not to be tempted to finish that maths homework sitting precariously on my bedroom table (Da da da da!). WHAT IS ‘WHAT CAR?’ It’s a car magazine. What more do you want! Sorry, I’ll try harder. What Car? comes from one branch of the ‘Which’ company, which ...

A Friend In The Trade

Advantages: Good Round-Up of statistics, good reviews
Disadvantages: Writing can be a bit repetitive

...couple of consecutive copies of What Car and used its articles to point me in the right direction. The road test reports it carries have varying levels of thoroughness and depth. There are short first drive reports and much longer first impression reports, there are articles of ‘What’s new’ in which recent or about to be launched models are previewed. The Group Tests which What Car does are very useful and it is always worth looking out for ...
...on sale in the UK and this data details the equipment levels, option costs, economy, performance and even the running costs of all the new cars. My advice is if you are in the market to change your car then get a copy of What Car to help you. ...

What Car? Magazine review, silly

Advantages: A lot of onformation available
Disadvantages: Not always bang up to date.

I was very surprised to find that no one else had reviewed this magazine. I was under the impression that it was at least one of Britain's best selling car magazines. Oh well. I hope mine is sufficient. I have visited this site a few times. It doesn't seem to be updated as often as Autoexpress.co.uk (please read my review of that as well) but still, it has plenty of encyclopediac information available, such as car prices and specification. Also, ...

The Definitive Car Magazine

Advantages: well laid out, full of stats, takes years to read it all!
Disadvantages: Puts you off buying that hot hatch when you see the MPG

What Car? is an epic Bible of a car magazine, full of every possible stat you could think of on every single car for sale in the UK. It was the 1st motoring magazine to include the specs for each and every car and soon all the competition followed suit, but What Car? Also has many other strengths over the competition. Like most magazines What Car? starts of with short blips of news which would include items such as Safety breakthroughs and new cars ...
...its feet wet getting stuck into car reviews, and the magazine usually does this by road testing 3/4 similar cars i.e., Small Executives, and picks out the one it would recommend. In the tests all there is all the data you would expect from the cubic feet of space in the boot to the Miles Per Gallon of the car. The magazine has competition from the likes of Top Gear and Autocar, but in my view for the serious car enthusiast this magazine is in a ...

Solid as a Volvo

Advantages: vast database of figures
Disadvantages: much unchanged from month to month

To call What Car? a magazine seems a little unfair - it is in fact a giant tome of motoring statistics published monthly. As a car buyers guide it has reasonable coverage fo the months new entrants to the UK car market, and three or four road tests or group tests along with a couple of features on safety or car security etc. The strenght of this magazine is its impressivly in depth and well laid out facts and figures listing. Every new car is ...
...information is vast and accurate. However much of the detail is unchanged month to month so the regular purchase seems expensive at over £3 a copy. This magazine serves as a good reference for someone looking to purchase a new car who wants background before vising the showrooms or as a bi-annual purchase for the car buff, ...

Buying a car

Advantages: Easy to read, unbiased
Disadvantages: none

...its always good to know what is going on in the manufacturing world! being quite cheaply priced as well (in comparsion to buying a car!) i would highly recomend this to anyone that is looking to buy a car, and avoid the car salesman's biased approch to whatever dealer he works for, (no offence) Go on! buy it! i promise you wont be disappointed ...

Great source of information

Advantages: Great source of information
Disadvantages: Sometimes not accurate with info

I use What Car? in my job dealing with company cars. It's a great source of information. The company car tax calculator is great - and I use it often! The magazine is packed full of ideas for new cars with great reviews and test drives so you get the full information. I do feel though, as with most car (or in fact most magazines) magazines there are too many advertisements! The section at the back with the specifics for each car and how much extra's ...
