    Advantages Advantages Pure unadulterated pleasure

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not a single one

Let me confess up front. This did not, strictly speaking, make me happy. I wasn't unhappy to begin with. What I was afterwards is….well, does 'suffused with joy' sound too pretentious?…."glad to be alive" too trite?… "pleased to me" too self-satisfied? They all apply, but let's just settle for 'happier'. What it was, was a lunch-break. An ordinary everyday lunch-break. All employer-initiatives notwithstanding, I am still one of the miscreants who cannot be relied upon to take a break in the middle of the day. My problem is getting started again afterwards…but you don't need to know this. One ... more

Advantages Advantages Glorious autumn, winter and summer too

Disadvantages Disadvantages What's the matter with the spring of our discontent?

After some thought (and a draft I didn’t much like) I have decided not to add my own musings about autumn to those already posted as part of Ciao’s ‘Newsletter Creative Writing’ campaign, welcome initiative though it is. However, the exercise did put me in mind of this review, written some years ago and surely ripe for an update. Those of you who know me well - and any of you who have assiduously read my reviews know me as well as anybody, which may be a poor reward for all the effort but I can't help that - know that for a tired old cynic I am strangely susceptible to irrational optimism and ... more

Once I was so lonely and I cried most every night, Depression, fear and pain, I tried so hard to fight It fast become a problem, no reason left to live I cared for people all my life, had nothing left to give. Until one day I ventured in to try a new web site That was recommended by someone, another in my plight. The site of course was Ciao and I’ve been here for a while. It’s given me something to do and often makes me smile. Now the lady that had sent me here and helped me from the start, Is someone that we all hold dear, she has a great big heart. Advantages Advantages For me, a totally new kind of holiday

Disadvantages Disadvantages I don't even want to think of any

I suppose this could have waited till Ciao had a France/Creuse Valley category, but what I'm about to write would have been so off-topic in many places that it wouldn't have justified a place in the travel section. However, as something that's made me happy recently, what follows fits the bill admirably. So….. MY WIFE'S A TEACHER SO SHE MADE ME WRITE THIS HOLIDAY DIARY I've just returned from 10 days in France. Nothing special about that I guess, since France lies 22 miles from Dover, but it's the nature of the journey that is different in a pleasing way. Being married to a teacher, and ... more

    Advantages Advantages See op

    Disadvantages Disadvantages See op

This sounds a good op to do, plus it would be good for me because if I am feeling down and depressed I can read this myself and remind myself what makes me happy, my kind of therapy. We all need happiness but it’s reminding ourselves what. Especially in our busy lives we sometimes forget the most important person in our lives and that’s me, and you. Thinking about yourself now and again will reap benefits. It can be the slightest thing that pleases you, doesn’t matter what, just keep doing it. This is about us as an individual not a family… Here are mine (1)…Not being scared anymore, being ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Nothing nothing at all

Where do I start?? Well first of all a big, no a huge thank you for all the kind messages sent in the last couple of weeks. You really are a great bunch and even though I haven't been around much, have looked at all the messages but have not had time to reply, sorry!! This year has well, not been the greatest but at last I can write THAT peom I have been aching to write for months. For those who do not have a clue what I am on about, a short re-cap!! Roger my partner has been--lets just say poorly for a couple of years and has been awaiting a triple by-pass for the last year. He was taken in ... more

Advantages Advantages I'm happy, he's happy...

Disadvantages Disadvantages ...no everyone is happy!

I never thought I would be writing something, or even thinking about something that made me so sad before, but has made me so happy now. Lost? Well you should be. I’m just as confused. As some of you know, and some of you don’t I split with my boyfriend in June, we’d been together for 3 and a half years, since I was 15, and him 19. It may not seem like too long of a time for some people, but considering we were both so young, and a new thing for both of us. Neither of us had, had anything so serious before, it was a very long time. We had our good times and bad times when we ... more

Dear Niamh, I can always remember the very first time I saw you, you were laid in the crib all wrapped up,so tiny and fragile with the most beautiful eyes. We both laid there staring at each other. You'll never really know how incredible that feeling was, the fact that you were there and you were my little girl. You were a very tiny baby having decided you wanted to come into the world a little bit earlier than you should have. Even that had to be done rather dramatically that's why Mummy's first glimpse of you was you in your crib. You managed in the hours after your birth to wrap your Daddy ... more

Advantages Advantages It sure beats sadness

Disadvantages Disadvantages My face aches if I smile too much

I am generally a happy soul, I smile a lot (so I am told, it is not something I am conscious of), I laugh a lot too, even at bad jokes but more so at good jokes badly told by my wife. Those who know me, or have read some recent opinions of mine, will know that the last year has not been the happiest of times. My wife has been very ill but is now on the mend, so that makes me happy. In August, partly to celebrate my birthday, partly to give my wife a holiday and partly (well mostly) to meet up with some fellow Ciaoers I went to Dublin, via Belfast. We met up with TheDuke (aka Aaron), ickate ... more

me and my girlfriend are celebrating our two year 'anniversary' of getting together, i know to a few people this may not sound like a long time, but an awful lot of things have happened in that short period of time, i would like to take this chance to let everyone know how great she has been, and has not only made me happy recently, but constantly over the last two years. Shortly after we started going out together my Grandpa died, i cannot explain in words how close me and he were, he was more like a dad, tought me how to shave, drive, swim everything, and when he died a huge part of my life ... more
