Advantages Advantages The internet can be a wondrous implement...

Disadvantages Disadvantages And it can also be dangerous territory!

Without a doubt it should be the parents/carers/guardians responsibility to look out for a child’s safety whilst surfing the Web. There – short and sweet and to the point! But is it really? Let’s take a look at how times have changed when it comes to supervising our children’s safely. Not that long ago it was a matter of worrying about if your child/children played out past their bedtimes - and if they had stuck to within the boundaries they were imposed with outside, etc. However, in my child’s lifetime (my daughter is fast approaching twenty this year), there has undoubtedly been a huge ... more

I never understand the parents who seek to place blame on anyone or everything else for the way their child is. Anything from behaviour to diet to TV viewing habits seem to be thrown around as responsibility of teachers and government. Some parents go as far as to place responsibility for their child's full education from learning numbers to reading a book as a teachers duty but is it really? I may be 'old fashioned' but I believe anything to do with my child is my responsibility. Yes outside agencies and factors may help in increasing his knowledge or introducing new things but it doesn't ... more

4 Stars Internet safety from childhood to teens Review with images 04/07/2012

Advantages Advantages Parents are the child's best teacher, education gives them the freedom to make wise decisions

Disadvantages Disadvantages There are more online dangers than ever before

My introduction to the potential dangers of being online started almost twenty years ago. Our younger son taught himself to read at three, and was computer literate - or, at least, confident in his abilities - around the same time. We had an early pre-Windows PC, and he quickly learned what the various functions did. I thought it all rather dull; but I couldn’t imagine him coming to any harm. So he would sometimes play on the computer in the living room while I pottered in the kitchen, keeping half an eye on him. I was more concerned about him damaging the computer than coming to harm himself ... more

3 Stars Surely this is the parents responsibility? Review with images 06/07/2012

Advantages Advantages Parents have the job of protecting their child

Disadvantages Disadvantages Many want to pass the buck

For some reason this is a topic that has generated a fair amount of controversy from several different directions and to be perfectly honest I can not understand why for the life of me. The answer to me seems blatantly simple; at home the parents are responsible. At school the teachers are responsible. The only point in time this can get dodgy is when the child is at a friends home and then you are relying on the other parent to be responsible. At the end of the day it is the adult in charge of the child who is responsible for their safety. The argument against this is that it is so easy for ... more

When it comes to who is responsible for children's safety it really comes down to everyone that uses the internet in some small way. I don't think there is any one person that should hold the responsibility I think everyone has their role. Here are my theories: 1. Schools should have all sites that aren't appropriate for children blocked so they can't access them when they are browsing the web for whatever reason. I think teachers should also monitor what kids are doing on the computer. When I was in school the teachers at my school used to have all the computer screens in use in their ... more

As the Internet becomes more popular more people are using it and children are growing up with it as a part of their everyday life. In some cases, the children know more about how to use the Internet than their parents do. The Internet is not always a safe place though. For a start, there are scammers, adult sites and information that shouldn't be found by children. But who's responsible for keeping children safe when using the Internet? Well, nobody can truly control the Internet and the information that can be found online. Certain sites have been shut down, but that's more to do with piracy ... more

As a parent of two children, I consider it my responsibility to observe them whilst they are on the Internet. Currently, it is my six year old daughter who uses the Internet because my two and a half year old boy, is not old enough. My little girl loves using the Internet to play games and read children's stories. For this reason, the Internet is a good way of introducing children to new, educational resources. However, it can be a challenge to find the right content that is age appropriate. I always supervise my daughter whilst on the Internet. There are predators' on-line that one must guard ... more

    Advantages Advantages keep kids safe

Disadvantages Disadvantages lots of idiots online

Most children today have access to the internet at home; this is a fantastic learning resource as well as a means to communicate easily with others and have fun. There is a darker side to the internet though with kids at risk of being targeted by paedophiles and cyber bullies or accessing inappropriate material. We need to be aware of those risks so that we can take steps to keep our kids safe online as well as alert them to the potential dangers that are out there. Cyber bullying is an extension to real life bullying; a group of kids will send nasty messages to another child via email or ... more

Who's responsible for children's safety when using the internet? In my personal opinion this is one of the easiest questions to answer. It is the parents responsibility to safeguard their children when using the internet. Some people will disagree and say it is up to the child to keep themselves safe, others will say there is no dangers on the internet. In recent years we have seen exactly how dangerous the internet can be with a variety of children going missing and being murdered by people they met on the internet. When I first got given access to the internet I was twelve years old and had ... more

The Background Browsing through Facebook not so long back I came across a friends little sisters profile, having not seen her since she was at infant school I thought I would have a quick peek to see how she was getting on. With over 4,000 subscribers and thousands of friends it started to worry me why so many people would “follow” her. I had a look on her photos and whilst the girl had no nudity I would deem the photos inappropriate. At 13 years old I think I had a Bebo account, which I kept private with high security settings and only accepted friends that I knew. I don’t think the girl in ... more
