    What a delicious book this is, if an impossible one to categorise. Al Dente is not a cookery book, although it contains over thirty recipes. It’s not a travel book, although it follows the author’s trail all over Italy, illustrating the itinerary with liberal lashings of local colour at every stop. It’s not a history book, although many strands of Italy’s past are woven into its fabric. It’s not an autobiography, although its theme is intertwined with that of the author’s experience and antecedents. It’s not a polemic, although it conveys a passionate message.
