    Advantages Advantages World Class Tennis!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Getting tickets and sometimes it rains!

Monday, 20th June 2005. I've packed my bag for Wimbledon and we're all set to leave at 8 in the morning. You'd think we're going on holiday when I look at my list of things to take! No, it is just a day out, but one I like to plan methodically! Here's what I've got in my bag:-  Tickets - the most important items! One pair of Centre Court tickets for Tuesday 21st June. The longest day, and let's hope the weather stays fine. Signs are looking good so far!  Money, with £12 set-aside for the Park and Ride. Visa card - second most important item. The Wimbledon Shop beckons!  ... more

As a tennis fan I have always wanted to go to Wimbledon and so was thrilled when my tennis playing son was awarded 2 tickets in the LTA ballot. I thought I would write a review giving my tips of how to get the best from a day at the championships, so hope it will be helpful to anyone going for the first time! Getting there. *********** I think the easiest way to get to Wimbledon is by train. There are frequent trains from London waterloo to Wimbledon station. If you are coming via London then the nearest station is Southfields on the district line. We traveled via Reading, changing at Clapham ... more

Advantages Advantages Fantastic games, Henmania, excuse to eat excessive amounts of Strawberries & Cream

Disadvantages Disadvantages Henman never wins, tickets are hard to come by, rain

The weather has taken a decided turn for the worst. In fact yesterday I got caught in a mid-summer downpour whilst wearing flip-flops. All this after a glorious sunny two weeks can only mean one thing. Yes, that’s right, it’s Wimbledon time! I have always been a huge tennis and specifically Wimbledon fan. I don’t get to watch as much as I would like because I don’t have Sky so I only get to watch the final rounds of the French Open, Eastbourne, Queen’s and of course Wimbledon. But for that fortnight at the end of June, early July it’s ALL I watch (although I will of course be making an ... more

    Advantages Advantages It's very special!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Quite difficult to get tickets

Tickets for Centre Court in Wimbledon are sold out well in advance for the last four days of the Championships. If you want to get in the Centre Court just to experience the atmosphere, it is possible to get a ticket on the day. Last year, I went to Wimbledon on the last day and got into the Ground for £1. Then, I bought a ticket for Centre Court for just £3. Many people don’t watch all the matches in Centre Court and they leave early. Their used tickets are ‘recycled’ by the organizer and resold at a much-reduced price. Further more, money paid for the recycled tickets is ... more

    Advantages Advantages Magnificent game

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

9th July 2001, Centre Court, Goran Ivanisevic and Pat Rafter - and me. Yes, I was there - and I have not stopped smiling since. Its a daft thing to write an op on in a way, as it was by definition an utterly unique event, but I've bored all my friends to tears describing it and so now, I'm afraid, it is the turn of my fellow Ciaoers. I was actually here at work on Sunday when the news came through that the All England Club had decided to put 10,000 tickets for Centre Court up for sale for the mens singles final. I knew I wasn't working on Monday, I was exhausted from a long weekend, I didn't ... more

    Advantages Advantages Women like tennis

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Bir boring

British working - class kids don't want to play tennis, as simple as, just as British Asian boys don't aspire to play professional football in the Premier League, going for cricket instead. It's a cultural thing, kids playing the sports that make their parents happy. We should not worry about not having any decent tennis players in the United Kingdom. Tennis is for posh kids and if it doesn't work out then university will save the day. In 2008 British Tennis fired Brad Gilbert, some say the best coach there is in the sport, suggesting there is no one who can produce a Wimbledon singles ... more

Advantages Advantages Great sport, very exciting

Disadvantages Disadvantages Dullness still prevails too often

At last, after years and years of boredom, we finally get a Wimbledon tournament worthy of the occasion - hardly any bad weather, lots of excellent Tennis, a mass of thrilling and tightly fought contests and a meaningful British contribution - it's virtually unheard of... It didn't promise so much going into the competition - Pistol Pete Sampras was top seed and heavy favourite, although he was talking up the theory that he would like to win one final Wimbledon to equal Bjorn Borg's five in a row before he retired. Andre Agassi and Patrick Rafter were the other heavily backed runners and it ... more

Advantages Advantages the worlds best stars on our soil

    Disadvantages Disadvantages the british press

"It is the nature of the beast to criticise that which we cant do ourselves" It may sound very profound, and no its not a quote from any well known scribe. It is however the way I feel about certain "pressures" that we, the public, exert on our heroes. The national football team, local football teams, olympians, and this week one Mr Tim Henman. Being an avid tennis fan, for 2 weeks every year I enjoy this particular event as its on home grown soil. It also gives the normal viewer the access to see some of the worlds best tennis players. It is also an opportunity for the small minded to build ... more

Advantages Advantages Two week of Great Tennis

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Rain and queues

Well everybody it's that time again and hasn't it come around quickly, only seems like yesterday the players were chucking there rackets into there holdals and discarding there balls (the Women anyway). So tennis fever starts all over again for this year, the fact that tennis is played constantly all year round doesn’t matter, to most of the British Public Wimbledon is it. Tennis fans will know this is not the case but will agree the same thing SW19 is the best place to be so just sit back, watch and enjoy. So hands up who are the lucky ones that have tickets, I hate you already. Now ... more

Advantages Advantages The best tennis tournament in the world

Disadvantages Disadvantages Unpredictable weather as always

Being an avid tennis fan, I have visited Wimbledon on two occasions and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. However, the lengths which I had to go to in order to get the best tickets possible was perhaps a little extreme. While the French Open has a much more civilised ticket-line system, the organisers of Wimbledon see it fit for thousands of barmy english people to line the streets of sw19 overnight to get their centre court tickets. The first year I went, with my sister, we were foolish. Arriving at Wimbledon at around 7.30am, the queues were already immense, and we only managed to gain ... more
