Advantages Advantages Smooth, malty and delicious, with a lovely deep red colour

Disadvantages Disadvantages Nasty hangover if overindulged

I’m quite partial to a pint of ale once in a while, and I thought today I’d share a few words with you on the subject of a cheeky little number called Hobgoblin, brewed by the Wychwood Brewery in Witney, Oxfordshire. I’ve sampled this beer on a fair few occasions in the past: at beer festivals, on draught in pubs (when I’ve been lucky enough to find it), in bottles and, more recently in cans. My most recent experience with Hobgoblin – on Friday evening, as it happens - was from a can (actually, from a glass, but you know what I mean!), so I’ll be focusing on the canned variety for the purposes ... more

Advantages Advantages Tasty, dark and full of flavour.

Disadvantages Disadvantages A bit on the common side. Not as strong as the bottled version!

While STILL waiting for Ciao to add any new products to the Food & Drink Category, I am STILL retracing old steps and reviewing some classic beers. This one is a strong beer that is well worthy of a review. In fact, I’m not sure why I haven’t written about it already! Today I am sampling Hobgoblin and, although I have tried it both bottled and on draught, I will be reviewing the draught version. ~~~~THE BREWERY. Brewing has taken place at Eagle Maltings (the name of the Wychwood Brewery) since the 1830s, but the Wychwood name dates from 1983. The brewery is based in Witney, Oxfordshire. Since ... more

Advantages Advantages Taste, bottle, price....and a free t-shirt

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not available on tap in SE london :(

I don't know why I picked up this particular ale in Threshers one day last Autumn, perhaps it was the fairy tale loving child in me which was compelled to the large clear bottle with the large hobgoblin on the label, perhaps it was the '2 for £3 offer', appealing to the lack of funds on me, whatever it was, I have been a drinker and an advocate for this lovely ale ever since. ABV: ***** 5.5% ABV buttttttttt the beer itself is smooth and does not feel heavy or too gassy despite its strenght of character. To drink it, you need to have a tankard or a glass large enough to pour the whole bottle ... more

Advantages Advantages One of the best tasting beers I've ever drunk

Disadvantages Disadvantages Difficult to find on tap

"What's the matter, Lagerboy," goes the advertising slogan, "afraid you might taste something?" And it hits the nail on the head. Created, rather than designed, for a one-off occasion, Hobgoblin was produced by Oxfordshire's Wychwood brewery (a trademark of quality itself). Too much was made, however, and the overspill was supplied to a local pub. It's slightly cheeky, somewhat mischievous character was captured by a worker in the pub, who drew a picture of a hobgoblin and stuck it to the as yet un-named beer's tap. It took both the pub and Wychwood by surprise with its popularity, as ... more

    Advantages Advantages Fantastic taste

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

With Hobgoblin we are talking about real real ale No worries about the antecedents of this particular brew. It is produced by the Wychwood Brewer of Oxfordshire, a brewer of some exceptionally fine real ales. Hobgoblin looks the part. Dark, yet not too dark, it has a fine, natural head on it, which makes it an exceptionally fine looking beer. But have you ever looked at a beer that should, in theory, taste like Heaven, yet is a bitter (if you’ll excuse the pun!) disappointment and tastes like Hell? There’s no danger of that happening with Hobgoblin! Hobgoblin has an initial taste of hops and ... more

    5 Stars A Magical Ale 14/12/2003

Advantages Advantages Nice, warm taste, can be drunk warm and still be pleasant.

Disadvantages Disadvantages You'll never find a pub that sells it.

Hobgoblin is the leading ale from Oxfordshire's Wychwood brewery. According to a beer mat I own, it was first brewed specially for a wedding, but there was too much made for just the one event, so a firkin was sold to a local grog shop. To quote the beermat, "in recognition of it's character, the student behind the counter drew a picture of a goblin and stuck it on the barrel. Customers started asking for the 'Hobgoblin' beer, and so the legend was born." Melodramatic histories beside, Hobgoblin is a real ale of finest standing. A dark colour but still not bitter of taste, it has a slight hint ... more

    Advantages Advantages Strong and Tasty

Disadvantages Disadvantages Hard to find a pub that sells it draught.

Let me start by telling you that this is a great ale. To start with it comes presented in a uniquely shaped clear glass bottle with a highly colourful label depicting the mystical creature the HobGoblin. The ale Itself is both dark and rich with a strong but velvety smooth taste. It has a lovely malty aroma that really gets your taste buds going. It is delicious by itself but it is great to enjoy this ale with a traditional english cheese ploughmans. I first sampled this ale at the CAMRA beer festival in Chelmsford where it went down a storm. You can find this beer in most good supermarkets ... more

Advantages Advantages The taste out of a can had to be the best on the market.

Disadvantages Disadvantages It can be expensive in comparison to others.

I am a massive ale fan, my favourite ales are usually malty, sweet or porter based. I am always happy to see this ale on the bar but usually there are others that grab my attention. So it is not my favourite beer. Why are you writing this review then you may ask? Because somehow these witches have managed to get ale into a can and still have it tasting great. There is no sulphur taste, strong metallic flavour at all. For some reason most other beer makers always fail canning their products. If you regularly drink ale you will know only too well how a perfectly good ale can turn into an almost ... more

Advantages Advantages Rich, flavoursome and not too expensive

Disadvantages Disadvantages Will fill you after one or two

Hobgoblin is very rich and flavoursome. I tasted some chocolatey notes over an overall toasty taste. It is full bodied but with a balanced taste, not too hoppy and not overpowering. I felt that it was very warming, the perfect accompnyment to a cold night. I enjoyed drinking it and savoured every sip, but couldnt handle more than 2 due to its richness. It is extremely filling so you really appreciate every sip and every bottle. It is a very drinkable beer so you will want to drink more but may not be able to because it can be quite heavy, which is quite useful if you dont want too much alcohol ... more
