Advantages Advantages visually and aurally impressive

Disadvantages Disadvantages poorly excuted ideas, clearly stolen ideas, repetative and limiting gameplay

At the moment we live in a culture of remakes and adaptations with Hollywood remaking perfectly adequate films into poor copies (Planet of the Apes, Ring) or raiding the library for source material (Cold Mountain, Master & Commander). Hollywood has recently shown a particular interest in comic book conversions (Daredevil, Spiderman, X-men, Van Hellsing, Hellboy, The Hulk), their success based upon luring an existing fanbase into the cinemas, who will see it either to applaud, or condemn, it’s conversion for the big screen. Unsurprisingly these lucrative films get adapted into lucrative games ... more

Advantages Advantages Lovely to look at and fast frame rate

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be tediously difficult at times

First Person Shooters (FPS) are a very popular genre. With the likes of Medal of Honour becoming very well known and Halo just around the corner things were never looking so good! But FPS's tend to be very similar in the style and story (Mainly World War II). For those of you not aware of what an FPS is, it is a game played from the eyes of the character that uses guns and other weapons. So this means that you can only see the gun in the characters hand. Ubisoft decided to be a bit more original and create a FPS based on a comic book, XIII (13). And to be even more original they even decided ... more

Advantages Advantages Great Storyline, adds a different style to FPS with its cell-shaded comic look

Disadvantages Disadvantages Pretty short game, nothing to unlock and not everyone will like the comic look.

There's nothing worse than being the only one who enjoyed a game. It's the ultimate geek form of loneliness (apart from being a Mac user). No one to discuss the great graphics with, the awesome plotline, the slick character development. This isn't a problem with XIII. Not because it's a popular game - it's not. In fact, I've only come across a smattering of references to it online, and a couple of scathing reviews on Ciao. It's because there's nothing to discuss. Normally with a game, the least you can do is praise or attack the graphics. But this is a relatively unique concept, and as such ... more

Advantages Advantages Comic style graphics, challenging, decent game duration

Disadvantages Disadvantages Incomplete story, load times on lengthy side, an average FPS at heart

An FPS based on the Belgian comic of the same name. [+] The game's comic style given by the cel-shaded graphics. Inset boxes showing what is going on in the surroundings, and being able to 'see' as well as hear sound effects. [+] Yet there are realistic touches, such as the way the image is distorted when underwater and temporary loss of hearing from deafening sounds. [-] Could have kept consistency of game's graphical style throughout as FMV sequences are without dialogue boxes (which would have helped the hard of hearing). [+/-] The graphic effect that shows kills close-up (this can be ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lacks originality, could've been so much better

XIII - nope, I had no idea how to pronounce it either. Thirteen? Ex - I-I-I? Ten 3? Well it turns out it is thirteen, as it's based on a French/Belgian comic book of the same name. It is a first person shooter where you playa character named thirteen, who is not sure of his own identity, as the game begins whowing the character washed up on a beach with a gunshot wound, not sure of who he is or where he is. The game is cel-shaded, which means it looks animated, and so it sticks close to its comuc book roots. As you progress through the game, you begin to learn more about 13's past, and ... more

The first thing i think anyone notices about this game is the shaded 3d graphics, well when i first heard that the graphics were going to be comic book style, it put me off. But now that ive actually seen the graphics for myself as well as played the game, i have to say the graphics are truely beautiful, and thats just saying it mildly. elements such as Subtitles are presented in speech bubbles, and headshots are shown in a series of comic style close ups in a picture-in-picture box which makes them all the more satisfying and therefore desirable. In this game you play a guy who one day wakes ... more

[Review can now also be found on my website - www.ps2-central.co.uk] When i found this game for £10 in GAME one day, I thought I got myself a great deal and a bargain game here. How wrong was I when i first played it. What I found the game was the most crap storyline and the most awful gameplay ever found. The story was OK but after a while it got repetitive into what you have to do, and at times, takes a bit of the missions of Spinter Cell but in first person. The stealth ones are virtually impossible to do and that's what has let the game down. The selling point of XIII is the cel-shaded ... more

Advantages Advantages Great graphical style, and a good range of weapons

    Disadvantages Disadvantages frustrating at times

Story: The story revolves around a mysterious character who goes by the name of 13. He wakes up on a beach, with complete memory loss, and the only two possessions he has is a tatoo 'XIII' and a key to a vault. XIII is accused of murdering the president, and is being hunted. As the game progress, you find out about your past, and hopefully, who you are. All in all, the story is quite gripping and original, and you sholud definitely complete the game, and find out your identity. Grpahics: Perhaps the best feature of the game is the original graphics style. The entire game is cell shaded, and ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages No soul or feeling to the game

I bought this game about 6 months ago, I thought I was getting a good deal because I spotted it for only £15 online. How wrong I was about that! the only way it could of been a good deal was if it had only cost me 15p!!!! The game is a traditional 1st person shooter (Doom style) but with comic style graphics and there-in lies the games only high point!! The audio is nothing to write home about. The synopsis is that you're a secret agent (number 13) and someone wants you dead, I didn't play it for very long to find if there was anything more to the plot or not. Now and then the game shows flash ... more
