Pre-release XIII was hyped. A lot. E3 Game Of The Show, video game journalists labelling it the new Goldeneye, masses of coverage. I wasn't sure why. Getting used to the inventory takes a while, and at one point I was getting the controls for this mixed up with the controls of Max Payne 2. (RELOAD DAMN YOU RELOAD!) XIII is a game based on a french comic book, hence it's rather odd graphical approach for an fps game. Cel-shading is used here to good effect though and does actually enhance the comic book nature of the games roots, so it's not just a cheap gimmick added in for effect. XIII is a unique first person shooter for all formats. It is the only game of its type to be done in cel-shaded graphics which makes it look a bit cartoony but they have used the cel-shading to enhance on gameplay with the occasional comic strip on the top and the tap, tap, tap feature which allows the player to see its enemys movements even if they are around walls. ...playing a short demo of XIII i went out and bought this game. Firstly i was shocked with how hard the game seemed to be even on normal mode i was dieing to often and been spotted, i also ran out of ammo and health packs rather quickly so i stopped playing the game, then after a few months i took it back out and began again taking more clever approaches and my time i soon began to get further into the game with out so much trouble. I have played this game on all formats and it definitely works best in the PS2 environment, but is worth a play on XBOX, i think the loading times are better on xbox which was my only problem with the PS2 version, the controls seem more receptive on the PS2, but are still ok on XBOX The game has quite a few good ideas ( Grappling hooks, using everyday items to knock out people, Seeing sound) although the first 2 seem completely stolen from other ...
