Advantages: cheap and plays 99% movie format Disadvantages: nothing
I bought my Yamada DVX 6600 last year at around £70, this was when DVX dvd players were starting to be used. I'm sorry but i cannot remember where i purchased my player from but it was from a online shop off the net, so i guess they are easy to find.
Well, what can't the Yamada play?? i don't know because my Yamada can play everything ive tried, from dvd's, vcd's, jpegs, wma, xvid, dvx. The Yamada is supposed to play 99% of movie fromats but up ... ...movie formats from the net Yamada is almost guarenteed to play them, i find avi and kvcd formats play quite well and the picture quality is excellent. I'm sure you will be able to buy this unit for less than £40 now or try the updated version of Yamada. All in all if you are looking for a cheap multiformat dvd player give this a go i have not had any problems yet and my player must be over a year old. ...

Advantages: Can play many different audio/video formats Disadvantages: Slow loading/recognising of discs
I bought my DVX6600 about two years ago (cost £70 at the time, but the newer model is much cheaper) to replace a poorly Philips DVD player. The ability to play video other than DVD seemed like a good idea, much more convenient than using a PC.
The unit is a full-width, slimline design. The disc tray looks (and probably is) fragile, but it hasn't broken yet. When the player is switched on, it spends quite some time checking the drive for a disc (this ... ...XVID files well; some (poorly encoded?) files play with a visual judder, but most are OK. I have encountered a couple of video files that couldn't be played with this unit (I suspect dodgy encoding to be the fault, the files were either DIVX or XVID). VCD & SVCDs play flawlessly.
The unit is Dolby 5.1 compatible, but I only have mine connected to a fairly cheap stereo Hi-Fi.
It is possible to upgrade the firmware, but I haven't bothered to see ...

After reading this on a website I took the plunge and bought one.I paid £76.99 inc vat. The player arrived three days later, I plugged it it with a spare scart lead and hey presto it works! HUZZAH! I have thrown everything at it apart from a slice of ...

Advantages: Cheap, Good picture, reliable, plays a good array of formats Disadvantages: weak loading tray, poor sound, freezing during play
...gone into liqudation). The Yamada DVX 6600 is a versatile player being able to cope with a vast array of formats from standard CD, VCD & DVD through to the far more compressed AVI, Divx, Xvid, MPEG4 and JPEG picture discs to name a few. it does come with one or two little downsides. Random freezing is quite common when playing compressed discs and can sometimes 'forget' what it's doing. A couple of times pausing a film meant it started playing from ... ...load and play films. Although it carries Dolby Digital and DTS stamps, the sound is very basic, if you wanted a real cinema sound you'd have to opt for a separate decoder for decent all round noise. Firmware upgrades are virtually non-existent and hard to find. The disc tray is quite thin and floppy, I have feared for it breaking on a few occasions when my daughter has loaded a film. But none-the-less it has lasted longer than other high end players ...
