    The world of the financial markets is very a murky place. If you have no experience and no idea how they work then starting out can be a very daunting prospect indeed. Screens of figures, bulls and bears, market cap, RNS, EPS, PE ratio, what the hell is he talking about? Sites like ADVanced Financial Network (ADVFN) are a great window into what for the uninitiated is virtually a foreign language.     I’ve been using ADVFN (Advanced Financial Networks) since the untimely demise of Ukinvest, which was by far and away my favourite site. It has taken a couple of weeks to get used to the look and feel of ADVFN, which I had used briefly in the past, but moved away from for reasons which have not changed. Read on.     Disadvantages Disadvantages Seems to have more downtime than its peers

    and for detailed trades info. This site is always my first choice for price quotes because it gives real time prices for free. Other sites are normally 20 minute delay prices or real time only if you pay. From the price quotes page, there is a link to detailed trades info, to see all the trades done that day (also available at Hemscott, but I prefer ADVFN because the layout is better, including a split into buys and sells - note, however, that this split isn't perfect, as their software is just doing the best it can to 'guess' whether a trade is a buy or a sell by comparing the trade price ... more

    ADVFN is the lynch pin of every online trader's portfolio. When I signed on to the site, my main focus was on the FREE REAL TIME QUOTES provided, but I have continued to be impressed by every aspect of their service. After a simple registration on their site, the free services which ADVFN offer include realtime quotes for single stocks, realtime monitors (which include bid/offer prices and the last price and volume of a share traded), share portfolios, alerts, charts, company information, news and bulletin boards.     ADVFN.com is yet another internet finance site, but of all the sites I have used for tracking my portfolio and plotting my next move, it's the one that gives me the data most efficiently. As with all websites of this type, ADVFN is made up of a number of elements, some premium, most free. I have heard that their premium services, such as Level 2 prices and premium bulletin boards, are extremely useful - subscribers swear they couldn't do without them these days.     one of the best if not the best sites for basic info on trades and iniyial info on companies (fundementals section). the site provides 'real-time' stock quotes/trades which are updated every few minutes. the accuracy is excellent compared to some other sites i've used before and the layout of how to use the info available is easy and simple to follow. most of the services available are free but there is a premium service that you can subscribe to if you are a more serious trader (probably more suited for day traders). the premium service i believe provides more detailed info about the trades ... more

    By background I enjoy investing and currently have holdings in over 30 shares. When I began to use the web more and more sign posts sent me to ADVFN . I rapidly became hooked. Availability of information is a must for an investor and with this site it is all too easy to find virtually everything you need. I set up my shares on a monitor-it only takes seconds- and for ever thereafter it only takes two clicks to have at your fingertips live time prices and all rns and afx news.     This website has many features inclduing real-time quotes, intraday chart and historical charts, lists of the biggest risers and fallers, a bulletin board and lots more all for free. This is essential for any investor. You can also get extra facilities but of course this does cost a fee. For £5 a month you can get access to a special pivate bulletin board. For £35 you can get level 2 prices. (This is what the market makers look at)It tells you how many people are waiting to buy and sell a particular share.     There are literally hundreds of sites devoted to finance and as far as I'm concerned for UK Shares this site is the ultimate. It has great charting facilities, where you can look at intraday charts or historical data. It has AFX and RNS news and information. There are top lists of shares data such as market capitalisation, top gainers/losers of the day. The portfolio option is great as well as you can see how your shares are doing in terms of profit/loss in real time.     I would absolutely not recommend ADVFN. When you join they put you on a rolling contract and give you no reminder whatsoever that they are taking your subscription out of your account when 12 months has elapsed and your subscription is due again. You are meant to write in to them, not e-mail or telephone but write a letter within 30 days of your renewal otherwise tough luck they take your money and won't refund any part of it citing their terms and conditions. To me that is sharp practice and their response when I asked for a refund fell on deaf ears. They are just money grabbers and unless ... more
