AIM to keep in touch

Advantages: Free, quick and easy to setup, you can search for friends.
Disadvantages: Looks old and chunky, some problems and annoying noises.

I have had MSN's instant messenger a while now and felt that there was no need to try any of the other instant messengers available. If you don't already know, insatnt messaging lets you talk instantly without a delay so you can actually chat to someone and they are private, not like an open chatroom. I had a friend who had not got MSN so suggested I got AIM (AOL's Instant Messenger) so I did to keep in touch with them. I found it fairly quick and ...
...has over MSN is that you can search for people by name, interests and location. It has a good control panel, and a good list of friends or buddy's. It lets you know by making a sound when a friend signs on so that you can talk to them. It also makes a noise when you send or receive a message. It can be annoying when you send messages though. I think it could be like MSN by displaying a small box telling you when someone signs in, because if you have ...

AOHell or ICQ

Advantages: see op
Disadvantages: see op

Instant Messaging is something I've used since the start of my online life, and in my opinion has been the sole biggest factor in drawing people of my ages group (18) to the internet. Back in the day when I had a 486 PC with a 14.4K modem I used ICQ, mainly to talk to my friends. As time moved on so have I, and I now use MSN Messenger as my main IM program, with ICQ used to keep in contact with the people I met on there. I never really found internet ...
...a neat idea to begin with and I did make a few friends from them, but just about every chat room came down to the same thing. You get the 12 year old boys who repeat 'n e hot laydees wanna cyber', you get the 60 year old men posing as a 16 year old girl, and the abusers who post links to some so called great sites, which always turn out have something in it for the person involved. I'm not belittling chat rooms, because if you know the right places ...

INSTANT MESSAGES GET THE MESSAGE

Advantages: fast, reliable, buddy list
Disadvantages: none really

Get The Message? Theres little doubt that email has helped to revolutionise the way we communicate with each other. Its convenience and low cost mean that postal delays and hefty telephone bills can now be easily avoided. Howerevr, even email has its limitations. Fopr one, there's no way of telling if the person you're sending a message to is online, meaning your message could stay in their inbox for days. Some people only check for email once ...
...youll get a speedy responce. Theres also the issue of slow or unreliable delivery. Heavy traffic, or problems with a mail server, can stop an email getting through quickly. Instant messaging on the other hand, allows you to coinduct 'real time' conversations over the net and lets you know when your friends are online. As with chat rooms, you can talk to more than one person at a time, invite other uses to join you, and exchange files and web links. ...

I Spy... you online

Advantages: free, can talk to multiple people, file transfer, away messages
Disadvantages: voyeurism, makes it hard to avoid people, impersonal

When I think about the AOL Instant Messenger (commonly referred to as AIM), it makes me sort of sad. Years ago, people used to phone each other or (gasp!) go to each other's homes to chat. Don't people ever talk to each other in person anymore? This program makes it very easy to have superficial relationships and may cause misunderstandings, since it is difficult to express sarcasm and other subtle human tones and emotions over the Instant Messager. ...
...technology is ruining human relationships, let's discuss the program itself. AOL and AIM AOL (America Online) is a huge corporation that seems to be taking over the world. But I don't feel guilty about having this programme on my computer since it is free to download from the AOL website. The service is sponsored by ads which scroll rather unobtrusively on the top of the program's window. AIM doesn't take up much space on your screen. The vertical ...

Shames MSN and all the others

Advantages: Modern, easy to use/install, simple, clear and fast. A great service from a world-trusted group.
Disadvantages: Being picky, it's fiddly to send if you prefere a keyboard to mouse, and you can't see if a person is writing a message or has left. Apart from that, a splendid job!

AOL have done something that would (and should) turn Bill Gates Green with envy. What a fab service! It's fast, fun, easy to use/install, availible the world over and is an easy way to meet new people. Being new to all this computer malarky, I's grasped the basics of AOL, and found my way into chat. AOL's chat is well designed, just a shame they can't controll the people in them! I find the chats often are led away from the theme, with a lot of ...
...and their is a reporting system and strict rules so it's OK I suppose. Anyway, you go into an (AOL) chat room, find someone you click with and simply click on their screen name. Then send an instant message (refered to as IM), and your away. All the usual font, smiles, ect. are there, along with your name and the person's name clearly posted, so you know who's sayed what. The only thing I find a bit anoying is that tapping 'enter' acts as a return ...

Take AIM and fire those messages

Advantages: easy to use, packed with features
Disadvantages: does not support video communication

For all those Instant Messaging freaks out there check this out if you haven't already! ;) Instant Messages....you've got to admit they can be funny at times and provide that personal and intimate environment when spreading the latest goss or having that little heart to heart when you just can't keep away from your loved one. Alternatively when you're bored and just want to meet someone new if only for a while then this tool is perfect! Though I’ve ...
...it and preferred something easier to use. I also have MSN but find this very limited in that you can only communicate with people who have hotmail/msn e-mail accounts. I was introduced to AIM a couple of years ago by a friend of mine and found it incredibly easy to use and jam packed with lots of cool little features. If you haven't figured it out by now this is an instant messaging program very similar to ICQ and others like MSN. As with many of ...

Such a simple easy to use product

Advantages: free, simple design, very easy to use, great range of chat services, buddy list saved wherever you are
Disadvantages: none that i can think of - anyone got any to point out?

AOL Instant Messenger is a dream! It is a chat program that allows you to message your friends direct to their computer in private chat boxes, without using any chat rooms. AIM (the commonly used abbreviation of AOL Instant Messenger) can be downloaded from the AOL site, www.aol.com and is absolutely free. It is easy to instal, giving you an icon directly on your desktop, or in your trays or on your Start Menu. You must then sign up for an account ...
...choose any you like, and add a profile. If you use AOL you can use your screenname, if you don't thats fine, just make up an imaginative screenname for yourself. It is easy to use and simple in set out and design, no complicated links, buttons or anything. It allows you to add friends under one of several available categories: Buddies, Families and Co-Workers, so it's set up for use for everyone and with everyone! It is easy to add, remove or block ...

At least they've got something right

Advantages: It's Free.
Disadvantages: None, It's Free.

AOL is known to be big, but also to have many flaws, and although they are disliked by quite a few, at least they have given something away that is useful to just about all. The instant messenger service offered by AOL, is actually one of the best I have used, and I still often do, though by now I suppose I should upgrade to the much newer 4.3 version as my older one ( version 3.0 ) is very limited by comparison. Even with my old version I still ...
...quietly in the system tray until I send a message, or am sent one. It's a very simple utility that almost set's itself up and comes with a fairly good help package, but if someone did have a problem, just a quick connection away is a whole array of info straight from the AOL main site. The system can be set to automatically load with windows, or you can select it as normal, though i find auto loading is far better, and you don't have to remember ...

keep in touch.

Advantages: Great for keeping in touch
Disadvantages: none i can think of.

This is another one of those commonly used personal messaging utilities. AIM, which stands for AOL instant messenger, is used for chatting to your friends either alone or in a room with others. You can send files, type talk, voice chat, read news, and if you use the AOL ISP service (like me) then you can read your AOL emails. It also gives you the opportunity to and other pop accounts to it. The program is about 2.5 Megabytes in size to download; ...
...to install on your computer. If your not an AOL member you will have to register with AIM to use this, as I am an AOL member I didn’t need to register, as I could use the same screen name and password, so I can't really comment on the registering process. Once you are up and running you can add friends to your buddy list (a list that tells you when your friends are online/offline. It also tells you if they have an away message showing). If ...

Happy times

Advantages: instant chats with your friends
Disadvantages: They can see when you log on

Is it really worth your time having an instant messaging service rather than just plain e-mail? It all really depends on your needs. The main advantage is as it says instant replies. You don't have to sit there for ten minutes wondering if your friend has received your e-mail. You can of course just arrange a time and meet your friend in one of the millions of chat rooms on the web. I find this too quick and hard to keep track of what is being ...
...conversation. Not very private at all. I first started using messenger at work as I was often in a separate building than the person I needed instructions from. Rather than waste time it was much quicker to just message them with my instant messenger I use Aol normal messenger as I find it quicker than e-mail and also my messages stay on screen for me to refer back to until I log off again. It is an excellent way to keep in touch with both my business ...

A Conversation that Travels 3000 miles per second

Advantages: Very quick, easy to use, can be customised, and you can talk to friends from other servers.
Disadvantages: None I can think of

When I first got AOL, I noticed a small window in the top right hand corner of the screen, entitled Buddy List. At first I ignored it, but after a week or so curiosity got the better of me, and I clicked on setup, hoping that it would tell me what it was all about. I was given a list of options, and I soon realised that by typing in a screenname, you could find out whether that person was online or not. But that's not all. The buddy list window ...
...screennames. You get the opportunity to delete these and add your own. I didn't know very many people who were on AOL, so I deleted two of the categories (Co-workers and family) and left 'Buddies'. I got a fright one day when a voice suddenly said "You've got company". I realised it was coming from the buddy list, so (apprehensively) I clicked the box which read IM. What came up on the screen next was like a mini e-mail window! I typed in a short ...

AOL IM is the Best UPDATED 28 1 2001

Advantages: Fast, numerous features
Disadvantages: Can sometimes be sluggish

AOL Instant Messenger is a completely free instant chat program and can be downloaded at no charge from www.aol.com/aim. It's available to anybody, you don't need to have an AOL account to use it. AOL users have their own messenger version built into the software. In my opinion, this is one of the best available with a number of good and reliable features. It's a great one too for beginners, and the user interface is very straightforward. My mother ...
...be, but she got to grips with this one in no time!! The program comes crammed with lots of great features most of which you can personalise to your taste, some you'll use often, some probably not at all. Firstly, you can use 'emoticons', a great selection of faces with smiles, frowns, sticky out tongues, blushes etc., to add some fun to your chats. You can choose the size, colour and style of your typeface, and even add your own 'buddy icon', which ...

Chat to friends

Advantages: chat to mates, easy to use
Disadvantages: none

Another chat room I chat in is Aim. This stands for aol instant messenger. You can chat to friends in a chat room, or in a room with just your friends. To download aim go to www.aol.co.uk You do not have to be with aol to go on this chat as i'm not, but I used to be though. You just download it and you are then ready to chat to friends. You can add your friends to your buddy list, which tells you if they are on or off line. To start chatting to ...

You can say you are away from your pc too, so people will know not to message you. I also use it if I'm busy and do not want to be disturbed. You can chat to as many people as you want at the same time. You can all chat in one room, and you just send an invitation to your friends, who will join the chat room, or ...

message in an IP packet

Advantages: Fast, free, Voice enabled, game enabled
Disadvantages: No camera support.

I first started using AOL IM or AIM as we've come to know it many years ago when I switched from AOL the ISP to another ISP. To stay in contact I installed AOL IM and found this to be much better and easier to use than the AOL "KIDDY BROWSER". INSTALLATION Piece of pie. download the file from www.aol.com ( UK versions are always more duller - weird or what. ) and wait for the file which is less than 4 Mb in size download. Once aquired its just ...

REGISTRATION Fairly easy and simple. you either start AIM and login as a new user which will load up the page automatically, or you can dive deep into the aol website to register a name. Here is the hard part - finding a NAME that someone else has not already aquired. AOL do provide help with three boxes where you can put some words and their system will try to find a "suitable" name. ...

How to save money on your phone bill....

Advantages: Free! Find a buddy with you're interests. See op.
Disadvantages: Most are from the US - but thats not always a bad thing! (free holiday maybe!)

If you're anything like me you’ll love instant messengers. I used to be addicted to them (I’m glad to say that I’ve kicked the habit now!), I do however still think they’re great. Having downloaded and tried practically all the instant messengers out there I have come to the conclusion that AOL and MSN instant messengers (hereafter known as IM’s) are the best out there on the web. I DON’T HAVE AOL AS MY ISP THOUGH… ...

Download: AOL IM doesn’t take long to download, this is quite unusual ...
