    Since landing myself a new job opportunity 55 miles away (nice career development move!) I have been on the car buying merry go round with a vengeance. Obviously for that distance both fuel economy and comfort are of utmost importance and I am looking for something quite rare - notably a diesel automatic vehicle, budget was stretching to a 3-5yr old vehicle depending on how prestigious a model I elected for, and low mileage was a factor - as I will no doubt be doing 100,000 miles in the next 3 years without doing a lot more than commuting.     It's that time again for me - summer is pretty much here, and every loaded person is out showing off in their brand new convertibles - whilst I'm stuck with a (quite reasonable) V reg 306 that I'm thoroughly bored with now.     Autotrader is an icon of the eighties that has moved into the new century with grace and skill. This is not through active management but it has been driven by market forces and as such it has survived. Both a magazine and a website, it is dedicated to the sole aim of selling cars and car accessories to the Great British public and it does this very successfully.     Ive been a fan of the autotrader since I started using the magazine back in the dark ages when I was 18.Ive tried a lot of different ways to selling cars, via free and local papers, agencys , and local shop windows.The one that Ive had the most success out of by a long way is the Autotrader.I how this as I always ask the person whom have bought the car where they saw it advertised, so I know where to look advertise in the future.     This is a really quick and painless way to find a new or used car its worthwile noting the following tips for searching the dattabase because its not that easy to browse around if you are not sure what model of car you want to buy. Definately register, as you can look for a particular model number (ie. GL GLX etc) and you can look for a particular mileage and age. And don't bother if you don't least know the make of the car and model of the car that you want... I find its well worth going to the topgear site www.topgear.beeb.com to find a specific model.     Anyone who is looking to buy a used car should visit the autotrader website. It has a massive database and contains thousands of cars. It is also extremely easy to use and sophisticated. You can specify various options to narrow the search down to your ideal car, right down to the colour. Another good feature of this website is that you can limit the distance of the cars it lists. You also get a good idea of what price you should be paying as there is such a vast selection.     I am not a regular reader of Autotrader, or any other car sales magazines or publications. However, I have always assumed that the best way to sell a car or buy a second hand one is through the Autotrader. I advertised my car, priced a little too high and with few details (In my heart of hearts I didnt want to sell it but I had to !!) and the photographer came round. By that thursday, my car was advertised in the correct section, and looked good. Not many other Mini Coopers in there. The only phonecalls I received were from other sales magazines telling me they were better. I was a little ... more

    We were recently looking for a new car and looked at this site quite a lot. Apart from giving you listing for cars, new and 2nd hand, that are for sale throughout the country, you specify how close to home you want to look it also gives you listings of the cars that suit your needs if you do not have a particular model in mind. There is a questionnaire that asks you about your needs such as the size of car, price etc and then it suggests models that may be suitable within the area that you have asked for.
