Advantages: Pass books you don't want anymore onto strangers who will appreciate them Disadvantages: It may be a while if at all before the strangers tell you how and where they found your books and what they thought of them!
Love books? Have too many books but can’t bear to throw them away? Then you’ll LOVE this site. I’ve actually been a member for some years now but only recently started to actively use it. It’s a very unusual concept but one that I’ll attempt to explain in this review. Once you get your head around what it’s about, I’m prepared to bet many of you will head over there just to check it out, and a high percentage of you may even become members. It’s ... ...at all if you don’t want to.
What’s It All About…….Alfie?
The website is called BookCrossing and can be found at www.bookcrossing.com. It was set up in April 2001 and it is basically a way of giving and receiving books completely free of charge! Many of you may already be familiar with the American site wheresgeorge.com, where a rubber stamp is used to place a message on a banknote asking users of that banknote to enter the serial number of on ...

Bookcrossing.com
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In September 2005 I read a review on Ciao about bookcrossing. I was instantly hooked. I joined immediately and I am an active member to date. Bookcrossing was created in April 2001 and it has already entered the Concise Oxford English Dictionary (in August 2004) where it is defined as 'the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, ... ...to bookcrossing than just random book releasing. The sites 500,000 members from across the globe are willing to trade and share books and discuss all aspects of books. To date, 42,842 of these members registered in the UK. Almost 4,000 of these are in Greater London alone and there are 356 members in my home City of Newcastle Upon Tyne. These members have thus far managed to register almost 4 million books on the site. That is a staggering amount ...
Advantages: Free to join and use, superb way of recycling your old books Disadvantages: Some books might get binned, you can't always guarantee your books will be found and registered by their new owners
I have found a gem…a real feel good site that I am sure will be of use to many other members here…and I’m dead excited….I just want to tell everyone about it! I actually came across it thanks to a freebie site and curiosity got the better of me so I joined…now I am addicted!
WHATS IT ABOUT THEN?
The website is called BookCrossing, its been around since April 2001 and its basically a way of giving and receiving books to and from total strangers ... ...it! Confused? I was when I first joined but it has all started to become clearer. If you have enjoyed a book, or even if you haven’t, and would like to share it with others, you set your book free….to literally run wild!
You decide what book you want to release, fill out it’s details and then give it a unique number on the Bookcrossing website (BCID – Book Crossing Identification Number). You then take your book and leave it somewhere of your choice ...
Advantages: Allows you to share your books with others around the world and allows you to gain books from others. Increases your book reading range, in a sense you can try before you buy! Disadvantages: Addictive!
Bookcrossing sounds like a simple enough website hey? A simple enough procedure even when you learn what it’s about. But it’s more than that. It’s an addiction waiting to happen…!
~WHAT IS BOOKCROSSING?~
The process itself is simple enough. First you need to go to the website and register. This couldn’t be simpler. Chose a screen name, input a few of your details and you’re done. Nothing other than your screen name, age and location will be displayed, ... ...and you’re ready to go.
Register one book; register a ton of books, either way it matters not. With each registration your book(s) will be each given their own unique identification number (their BCID number). Make a note of this inside the front cover of the book, and then prepare to ‘let it go’. When you register each book you can ‘journal’ it. Here’s your chance to let everyone know what the book is about. You can be as brief as you like or as ...
Advantages: Great way to find new authors, good way to clear out books you'll never read again Disadvantages: Website can be a bit slow, no guarantee that your books will be picked up
Intro
------
I have always loved reading and when I stumbled across Bookcrossing (www.bookcrossing.com), I was delighted to find a great way to meet like-minded people. Over the years, I found that my bookshelves were filling up quite rapidly - some with books that I hated and some with books that I loved and wanted to share and discuss with people. Bookcrossing is a movement that encourages you to do just that - by registering your book with the ... ...people to discover.
The general idea is that people pick up a book you leave somewhere, read it and then release it somewhere else.
So how does it work then?
------------------------------------
To sign up, it's a simple form to fill in. You are asked what area you live in and what your email address is. The people that run Bookcrossing have always stressed that it is a completely free site and that they will nver sell any of your personal information.
Advantages: A fun way to read second hand books Disadvantages: A bit time consuming
Today, I went to my first Bookcrossing 'meet'. I signed up for Bookcrossing about two years ago, but to be honest, it all seemed a bit of a kafuffle to do, so I never got around to setting any books free. Bookcrossing.com
A quick synopsis as I see it. Bookcrossing is an American idea, and it involves you signing up as a member (with a user name) on their website, then, when you have a book that you have read, and feel that others may also enjoy, ... ...to pass on. You add some information onto the front, and inside the front cover of the book, including an id code and website for Bookcrossing, then leave it at your chosen place, ie, GP surgery; park bench (ensuring that it is water tight); pub; sports club - infact, anywhere you feel it may be picked up by someone interested enough to read it! Then, the person who has picked it up, will read the blurb that you put inside, and log onto the website ...
Advantages: Cheap and easy to do Disadvantages: You need a computer to fully participate - though obviously not a problem for CIAO members!
Book crossing in a nut shell - its all about passing your books on, or rather, freeing their little spirits to go on and bless someone else's life.
Okay, so I heard about it in a mail, and I got curious - what on earth is book crossing, so I Google'd it, and found an ace place.
I love books, and I have a lot of them. Every so often I used to collate some, and drop them off at my local charity shop, where I'm sure lots of them stayed, getting more ... ...to the charity shop - but I also 'release' them too....
Okay - so you read a book, you may love it, you may hate it, but it'll probably sit on your shelves for ages, and if you hate it - you'll probably never read it again, and if you love it, you might re-read it - but it still sits there. With book crossing, you still read a book, but then you set it free, to run across the world - but most likely your immediate area. Once read, you enter its ...
Advantages: Fantastic free way of sharing books Disadvantages: Very addictive and no guarantee your books will be safe
The idea of BookCrossing sounds simple enough doent it. Simply 1. root out your old books, 2. register them through an easy process, 3. attach a little label to the inside of the cover,
4. then simply leave it on a bench, bus train or wherever
Hopefully someoneone will pick up your wild book, go to the website and enter the BCID (registration number) of the book, and everyone will know where it is! Leave comments, tell the world what you are going ... ...doesn't sound like enough don't worry. There is more. Much more.
With over a quarter of a million members, BookCrossing is a thriving and growing community, where you can make friends through the message boards and messaging system. You can even organise sharing of your literature if you aren't comfortable with ssimply wild releasing it.
Advantages: Excellent community, good way to dispose of old books & acquire new Disadvantages: Highly addictive, website slow & at times unreliable
WARNING: this site is highly addictive.
I discovered BookCrossing just a couple of months back and initially thought the idea of "liberating" books sounded surreal. After a quick look around the site I discovered there was so much to be found & I have been hooked ever since.
Let me start by saying love books, to the point of never wanting to get rid of old books even those I have no intention of re-reading. In the past I have eased this guilt by ... ...I purchase second hand copies. BookCrossing encourages people to share their love of books, each book you choose to register is then listed on your bookshelf - this database alone is reason enough to join up. Books are allocated a status: TBR (to be read) AVL (available) PC (permanent collection) RES (promised to someone else) or TRAV (travelling). Any books you have read you can choose whether or not to review and give a rating out of 10, you can ...
Advantages: A great way to share the books taking up space on your shelf Disadvantages: I have so many that i want to keep.....
This site encourages you to get those books off your shelves (they're just sitting there), get a unique BCID (bookcrossing ID) for it, and let it go. You can leave them somewhere and hope someone finds them, send it through the mail, meet up and exchange books with another member...there are lots of ways to do it. First you register the book on your bookshelf, write a short journal entry, then you can release it and see if someone catches it.
Many ... ...the point is really to get the books out there to share. I have only released one book "in the wild" and I recently sent one to Brazil to a bookcrossing member who asked to read a book on my shelf. It was strangely exhilarating to send that little book off to be read by someone in another country. :) There are release alerts so if you want to just go find a book you can see what's been released in your area. They even occasionally offer free books ...
