Being a new user of Excite’s free e-mail service I thought it worthy of writing an opinion on Excite.com, itself.
Covering all aspects of Excite is not an easy task since they do just about everything and one look at their homepage tells it all.
Unlike other companies such as Virgin, Excite have not monopolized each product or service, with their own affiliate or associate companies, and thus arises the important difference. The realization ... ...almost impossible to cover every aspect of Excite’s services and if I did try this opinion would go on forever. I therefore would again like to concentrate on the main attractions of this site.
Anyone can become a member of Excite. The registration is free and the process is very simple and not time consuming.

Advantages: Wide range of features and resources. Disadvantages: Website is on a slow server, much of the content is out-of-date.
Excite is a web portal. Simply, a website that offers a wide range of different tools to assist your online experience.
The most famous site of this genre is Yahoo!, although there are many 'portals' out there. Here's a run down on what Excite has to offer:
Search Engine - One of the main features of this site. Functions as an intelligent engine, but isn't great on accuracy or speed. Nor is it updated regularly, it can be very hard to get a site ... ...email. Not too bad, hosts all the main features you would expect. Although the situation isn't helped by excite's slow servers. It is also WAP enabled.
Free SMS - Pretty good by all accounts, although some messages have gone astray with me.
E-Cards - A fairly good range of e-cards. (These are images that can be customized and sent to friends by email, like birthday cards, etc)
Chat - As with most 'chat' facilites offered on these type of sites, ...

Like Yahoo, Excite is another one of those sites, which has everything. In my tedious hours of boredom at college, I have spent a lot of time looking around, just checking out new sites. This one is by no means new, but I only started visiting it very recently when it was pointed out by a friend (a 20 year old friend who used to play around with the 12 year old girl ‘love’ stuff that they have there – you’ll see what I mean ... ...quite ‘jam packed’ site and quite colourful. It will surely cheer you up on a rainy day (if you’re a weirdo). My first intentions were to check out the search engine quality. It was no disappointment. Although jot up to the speed of Google or Yahoo, Excite isn’t that far behind. They repeatedly gave me good results, and I have found very few dead links. Excite is one of those sites that has everything. I originally started with the thoughts of using it as a search engine. As soon as you see the site for the first time though, you'll notice just how much more than that it really is.
The first thing I noticed about it was its very complicated look. I just sat there thinking "Oh my God, where to now?". No, not really, it wasn't quite that bad. Although there is always a lot packed in to their pages. ... ...colourful when compared to other similar sites. They mostly stick to a orange/yellow and blue scheme, which isn't bad at all.
You can see what you're gonna get, just from opening up the home page. There is a lot of stuff listed here, just about everything you're going to get actually. Its contents include things like:

Well excite.co.uk has move towards a portal setting in the last few months, it says it reaches 56% of the UK internet users, you basically type in what you want to search for then choose the option you want to search in, ie UK sites, web, news, europe, photos, mp3 etc. These may seem good but behind the boring look and advertising banners, it often lists irrelevent results and huge numbers of them to!
That sounds pretty bad, what ... ...many things really the main features are "free email", "free sms", "free e-cards" and other stuff like horoscopes, people search, auctions, weather and of course loads of shopping!
Well that sounds better, what else can you tell me....
you want more eh? Well the main page of the site is full of advertising, the main source of income for excite, i most noticed this "tarot reading" at 75p / minute!. You can customise many features from what news ...

Excite really isn't much of a search engine, the search facilities are one of the poorest I've seen. Out of all of the sample searches I've tried, they all failed miserably. Thankfully, there is much, much more to Excite than simply searching. Sign up for a free personal account and receive your own personal start page, email, voicemail/fax number, SMS sending and even take part in the interactive games.
Although none of the features are new, they ... ...provided by Virtualplus provides you with a local (0845) number, which makes a nice change from companies such as Yahoo! offering United States numbers. Of course, you can only check to see if you have new voicemail messages by checking into your Excite account, but this isn't really much of a problem if you plan to use it regularly. Technically,you're receiving an answerphone and fax machine for nothing, so that's a small price to pay.

Well it was the great TV advert that got me first going to this site but I am unhappy to say the site does not look nearly as "exciting" as the adverts. It looks rahter plain and boring and I feel in a world where there is huge competition for internet users, you would have hoped EXCITE could spice up their design. Having said that, the functions are flawless. The typical free email, WAP phone compatability, local weather, typical shopping sevices ...

Excite.co.uk is certainly one of the better search engines about. I use excite constantly and always find what I need. But that's not all excite has to offer, free webmail, free sms text messages, news and much more. It is all on Excite.
As a search engine it offers all the basics, UK Searches, Web Searches, MP3, Videos and a very good Advanced Search Engine. If you have never used an advanced search then try the one at excite, it works very well.
... ...they do. Excite email is no different than others, although the advetising is not too 'in your face', it is compatable with email organisers and it is suprisingly easy and fast to use.
As a combined Search, Webmail and messages site, you can't go wrong with excite.co.uk ...

Excite is another great way of chatting! It is all very straight forward and all you have to do is choose a member ID. There are many chatrooms to choose from ,including, 20's, 30's, music, everything you could think of! It runs very quick also which is a good thing, you can do searches for your friends on here too so you are never out of touch with anyone!
This chat facility is available to people of all ages and nothing could be easier! So go ...

Excite travel is a fairly informative guide to most countrys and cities in the world. You can search by country and by city to find your destination and excite takes you to a page of text about the particular destination rather similar to those opinions on ciao. I was expecting a bit more detail about destinations I searched and was also expecting the token picture or map but got none of these you get more information on excite classifieds or ciao.
... ...but the maps are not very detailed and slow to load. Of course the token holiday advert. On the main page you can search for flights by date time and destination I searched for a flight to Moscow for example and it took 1 minute to bring up the cheapest available flight available through Thomas Cook and surprisingly it brought up a very cheap flight with Royal Dutch Airlines. You can search for other holidays types such as package holidays, and train ...

Advantages: Able to customise a lot of the site, and free voicemail. Disadvantages: doesn't have a messenger program
...undergone a make-over, and so Excite.co.uk is probably likely to follow. But aethetically speaking it is not that bad and unlike some other pages is easy on the eye. And you can even change your colour scheme and pictures, if don't like what you see.
It also provides free voice mail, free fax service and mobile phone support (WAP). ...

...many dead links it has,I suppose I have not really checked it that many times.
Overall,my impressions of Excite.co.uk are quite favourable,although it is still not my preferred choice of search engine !Maybe I would give it 3 stars out of 5. What about you ? ...

Excite used to be just a search engine. Now its a lot more. When you type in www.excite.co.uk into your browser, you will be surprised how much is now available, especially if you haven't been there for a while. I was! You just have to sign up and then enjoy them.
Now, there is a whole range of things that you can do. Firstly, excite has joined the likes of genie and lycos, and offer free text messaging. Unfortunately, you can only send three texts ... ...as I know, the messages have been received instantly. Lycos has had a bit of a problem in that department. Also in this 'message centre' there is a free email address waiting to be chosen by you, and also free voicemail and fax, which I have not explored as yet.
As well as the search engine for the web, you can customise the web page to add a cinema search tool which allows you to type in a place, and then the results will reveal what films are ...

This is simply a fantastic web portal which has a great search engine and many features attached. You can enter an Excite precision search at the top of the page, and it means what is say in that the search is very precise. The search engine works very quickly and brings back the information of many subjects. What I also like about this site is that you can give it your own personal look to how you want it. You simple go to the top of the page on ... ...the page settings, the content, the layout and even the colour. What a great addition to a good search engine site. There is even Free e-mail, photos and e-cards which can be used on this great portal. So what you waiting for, ? Go and check it out now on www.excite.com. I would recommend it greatly ...

Having excite as the search engine on my home page, I do use it quite often, however in some ways, compared to yahoo, and the other major players, it does still need considerable refining. when you search for something, you are quickly provided with a vast expanse of links, but unfortunately, most of them may have nothing to do with what you are after. this is because the sites are listed in order of quality, and not in order of relevancy to what ...
