I thought it would be nice to have the same instant messaging service as my girlfriend (now ex funnily enough) so that if did we were online at the same time we could have a short chat… both having ‘unlimited internet’ at some point in the day it would be handy. I quite simply adore MSN Messenger. It is a small download, has never frozen on me, and you can use those neat little symbols. I did try and put this forward to her, but ... ...person I sometimes am, I went to the ICQ site (http://www.icq.com (it was a good guess at the time)) and went straight to the download page and got started. It was eleven o’clock at night, and I realised the seven or 8 MB download was going to take me forty-five minutes. I stopped then.
Went back the next night and started at a more reasonable hour. Fair enough, it was a very easy download and installation process. But the 850-ish KB download ...

ICQ ("I seek you") is an internet chat facility that allows you to chat with family, friends, acquaintances all over the world while surfing the net.
First You download the software and install it, then you choose an identity, and then set your preferences - more on that later.
This piece of software is very usefull indeed, it allows you to keep in touch with people in real time, it can monitor your email and alert you to new messages, ... ...it's someone's birthday (no excuses now!) and a whole load more.
What I really like about it is that you can place an indicator on your website which tells your visitors whether or not you've logged in to icq, so they won't waste time looking you up if you're unavailable, this is also useful from a career standpoint - since I'm about to embark on a career in web technology, potential employers will have no trouble contacting me.
The interface is ...

ICQ (or I seek you) has been around for while now. Five years ago I was amazed that an American friend of mine was online chatting (using software called Mirc) to his parents back in a hick state over the other side of the pond! This was my introduction as to what the internet could actually do! Before this is was purely an academic research tool that allowed the sending of emails! MIRC became a favourite of mine but now I have moved on to ICQ.
... ...had a lot of free time. The first year is always too easy! One of my problems was that my typing was what they call "hunt and peck"! You find the key after a frantic search then depress with any finger that gets there first! I used ICQ to increase both my speed and accuracy with repsect to typing! Ok I still make typos but I am much more efficient now and best of all I didn't have to pay for a typing course.
ICQ is a free piece of software that ...

I have been using ICQ for quite a long time and I consider it very helpful. It is a program you install on your computer, a kind of 'community of friends'. When installed, you receive an ICQ number. If you have a friend interested in doing the same, let him install it and once he is also connected to the ICQ net he can search you by that number or by your e-mail address or any other detail. Anytime you connect to the Internet, if you have loaded ... ...be able to see your nick online. What can you do with the ICQ? Well, you can send both online and offline messages to your friends; you can have a chat session with them, you can send files, you can send SMS to them (although it is not working that good in Spain... I can't hardly ever do so nowadays)... you can send voice files, and some more things. But the really good thing of it is that you are in touch with your friends. You needn't go to any ...

I started on the Internet 7 years ago and knew nothing about computers at the time. My brother set it up for me and he installed icq telling me I would love it. I have been using it ever since and it is my very favorite
place to chat.
There are two modes you can set it up in simple or advanced and I started and stayed with the advanced as it is not that difficult.
To get icw you simply go to the site and download it, answer a few questions, pick ... ...to go.
When you first start you need people to add to your list to talk to. You can put yourself on random and wait for people to message you or you can go to the add/invite feature and search through random people under your interest or age range.
As with any messenger be careful how much info you give out and watch for people wanting to cyber. My random setting says intelligent talks only but that does not mean that people would read the whole ...

Advantages: you can chat to decent people with same interests as yourself Disadvantages: it is impossible to find them without having loads of idiots on your case
ICQ is an internet chat client which offers a host of services which are too numerous to mention but include greetings cards, sms and pc to pc phone calls. Great concept but does it really have to take up some much space on the hard drive. Not only does it automatically download a help file (if I want one I will ask) but the majority of the features tend to automatically be there which is great if you are going to use them but all I want to do is ... ...I can’t be bothered to find my phone. When you sign up to ICQ you are given the option to fill in details about yourself so when I started I only entered the basics such as name, age, town and email address. This was fine I found that I could stay free for chat and not be too bothered by complete strangers who just wanted cyber sex but the other week I decided to add in that I was female – BIG MISTAKE!!!
I am now hassled at least thirty (no exaggeration) ...

There was a point at which ICQ was a cool and natty little program that told you when your mates were online. In the days before free calls and free ISPs, those were few and far between and this novelty app grew in popularity. One day, however, it decided that it was going to run your computer and run your life. From that point on it turned from a natty little program into a giant (in internet app terms), bloated piece of detritus. Fair enough, it ... ...mates are about and letting you send them instant messages. But alongside that (which I find pointless now most of my friends are on 24/7) ICQ has its own crude email reader, SMS Messager, address book, games launcher, To Do list, notepad, calendar... If I want to read emails I will run Outlook, which does the job well. If I want to wrote notes, I'll use notepad. If I wanted to make dire cartoony icons I would use MS Paint or something similarly ...

ICQ is like your first look at the internet, daunting. But you very quickly get the hang of it and when you do you'll be chatting for hours. Highly addictive fun but also a great way to stay in touch with your friends or make new ones. It was recommended to me and after 'mastering' it I have a large collection of friends now. Make yourself unavailable or choose which friends you want you online. You can search for other people with the same interests ... ...a chat room for a private chat with a friend. The best thing is that you can use ICQ while doing whatever else you are doing online without the need to stop. Unfortunatley like anything of this type online on the odd occassion you may be subjected to an unfavourable message from someone you don't know, simple delete and add to ignore list!
I can't see any downfall to it and I couldn't live without it now. ...

I have personally found icq to be out of this world. I find it very useful to be able to chat to my friends and family whilst visiting my favourite sites. You can also chat to a few friends by requesting a chat room which is good if there are a few of you on there who all know each other. In the chatroom there are also various noises you can send each other. If you have a microphone you can also send voice mail messages to each other. I can't recommend ...

The idea's a nice one. See instantly when friends come online, and send them messages, files and other stuff. But the implementation is bad. The number of bugs in it is worrying for a product that is in use so much around the world. Why does it always seem to be a beta version that the entire userforce have installed? Why can't they make the protocol public so that Linux and FreeBSD users can get usable clients? Why dont they do something about the ... ...so many British Universities to ban the use of it? I know its a cliche and sounds really cheesy but to me ICQ is truly the best thing since sliced bread. I lived out in the far-east, mainly Singapore for a few years I really needed a form of communication that I could rely on to keep in contact with my friends over there. ICQ was the perfect option.
