Back in September, I received an email from my union asking if anyone wanted to go on a European Computer Driving License (ECDL) course through Learn direct. After first reading this wrong and thinking it was a driving course for people planning to go to Europe I realised it was learning about computers. I am quite competent on the computer but everything I have learnt is self taught by pressing buttons and seeing what happens so I decided that as I had nothing to lose (the union was paying the fees) I would sign up for it. I first filled out the form that union provided then I received an ... more

Advantages Advantages Good for people who have no or a limited education.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Rigid framework - not much flexibility, patronising staff, cramped & depressing room.

My complaint is all about the false impression created by the government sponsored Learndirect website and customer service advisors. I spoke to two advisors over the phone, prior to visiting a centre because I wanted to know how to take this particular course. I was OK to go to the centre but prefer to study from home. My main purpose was to refresh & brush up my spreadsheet skills. The customer advisors on the phone really encouraged me to visit the centre because “you will be better off” for many reasons – I could take free or discount courses AND get tutor support at the centre while you ... more

    Advantages Advantages Can't see any

Disadvantages Disadvantages not user friendly, impossible to get an sense out of anyone, course cannot be completed, ignorant, you have to actually go to a college or building that is running the course you require to enrol, you can learn at home after that

Please rate this once you have read it I enrolled on a course with Learn Direct last October, thinking as it was a free course it would be something that I could do at home on the days that I am able to do things. From the start there has been one problem after another. For a start it is advertised that it is possible to learn easily with Learn Direct, but first you have to find out which colleges in your area are running the course you want, then you have to actually go down to the college to enroll (even though, this is supposed to be an online college), (I can't really complain about this ... more

Advantages Advantages you learn in your own time

Disadvantages Disadvantages i haven't found any personally

I joined Learn Direct online two weeks ago, after long deliberation, and loking into other courses. The one thing that put me off in the beginning was that once you have enrolled on the Learn Direct website, you then have to enroll in the Learn Direct Centre in you area before you can access your course. That was until I saw the box saying TICK HERE TO ENROLL IN A VIRTUAL ONLINE CENTRE. Perfect for me. Upon doing this, I realised there are no virtual centres in my area, but that doesn't matter as you can enrol anywhere. Prices: The prices seem to vary in each part of the country, so this is ... more

Advantages Advantages Study from home, wide variety of courses

Disadvantages Disadvantages Enrollment only at registered College

As an enthusiast of e-learning and having experienced traditional learning environments when it came to developing my skills this time I chose the electronic route. Having read the mixed opinions on this site I have to agree with various elements, both good and bad, that have been discussed. Learn Direct is marketed as an easy, affordable way to develop existing, or learn new skills and in many ways it lives up to these expectations - once you have enrolled that is. The enrollment process takes about an hour, during which you have to visit one of the colleges that supports the course you wish ... more

Advantages Advantages study at your own pace

Disadvantages Disadvantages my course package doesn't work on XP!

I recently had a baby and one of my main wishes and ambitions is to set up my own business so that I can work from home for all the obvious reasons. However, I am a bit green around the ears when it comes to regulations and contracts and 'legally' type things so I looked around for some help to get me started and give me a bit of confidence. I found a course via web searches at Learndirect called 'Make or Break - Starting your own Business'. I phoned them up and instantly got through to the wrong department (although I took the number off their website). After some to-ing and fro-ing I was ... more

    Advantages Advantages none

Disadvantages Disadvantages This course is only compatible with Windows OS! What century is this?

After purchasing a course via Groupon, I was told by their customer services, after having trouble logging in, that their course is only usable for Windows users, and that 'it's too much work to set it up for other operating systems'... meaning that millions of Mac and Linux users are effectively barred from using learndirect. This seems to be backward thinking on behalf of ld team, or they have some exclusivity arrangement with MS. Either way, it's a big thumbs down for them, and it seems they are not a forward looking, progressive company, or that they have the users interests at heart. How ... more

Advantages Advantages I thought they were brilliant

Disadvantages Disadvantages Until I read the experiences of the Ciao users and dealt with them myself

I've read the opinions expressed by the Ciao members and I want to tell you about my experience with this organisation. Due to health issues I am stuck at home and I was looking for something to do to pass some time and feel useful. I was told that Learn Direct were looking to train online tutors for future developments. I didn't think that I had any chance of getting in but if you don't try you will never know. I filled in the form online and sent it to them. I was contacted almost immediately and they arranged to interview me by telephone. I was initially impressed and was looking forward to ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to use, and it works

Disadvantages Disadvantages Disc can be unreliable

In June this year I read a notice in a local events leaflet. It said I could learn to use a computer. It also said it was FREE, so I rang the number. I had to go to a resource centre, luckily only four miles from my home,to have a chat about my options. When I admitted that i'd never touched a computer (well, only when I dusted the one my boys used when they lived at home) they recommended that I start with a Learn Direct course called Surf Direct. As I didn't own a computer I was able to do this course in one of the centre's classrooms. This turned out to be a bonus as when my package from ... more

Advantages Advantages you can learn when you like

Disadvantages Disadvantages much higher ratio of learners to teachers

I started learn direct about 8 months ago just to kill some time realy .I found one of there leaflets in my local job centre and headed off to there nearest centre .There are about 2-3 learndirect centres in my locality so that was no problem finding one. The staff were friendly and efficient and set about to find out my LEARNING GOALS .they then arranged an appointment with me the following tuesday. The courses cost between £ 30-60 per course and is free to those in receipt of benifits .You dont get a recognised qualification with them. But you do get a completion certificate and some free ... more
