    Lycos are one of the biggest names in the Internet search game. In fact most people would find them almost as recognisable a name as Yahoo, possibly moreso that Excite and AltaVista. So if you are looking for a reliable Free Email service – but don’t want to be spammed to high heaven with a ‘Hotmail’ account – try Lycos Mail, Right…..errr WRONG.     Disadvantages Disadvantages I think they've all gone on holiday for the last three months.

    Since the year dot (.com!), I've been using Lycos for email. Not just bog-standard email, you understand, but the Mail-Pro version you have to pay for. All was well (even excellent - credit where it's due), until about a month and a half ago, or so - time flies. Then strange things began to happen. Firstly, it became incredibly slow. I blamed my modem. I poked it with sharp sticks, and berated it with wholly unsavoury language. It responded by demonstrating that everything else I asked it to do, it did in double-quick time.     Until today I had a different email address than the one that appears here. Then Lycos, in their 'wisdom' decided to terminate everybody's account - with just two weeks' notice. Heaven help the folks on holiday! I have no idea why they have ended the england.com; scotland.com etc addresses, they didn't bother to tell us anything, after all. In fact they didn't bother to tell us, the users, anything at all. They just sent an email which had a bug and couldn't be opened. If they can do this to us, they can do this to you.     Lycos is great. You name it they've got it. E-mail, Dating agencies, Search Engines, Mobile phone logos and ringtones, free SMS and now you can even get replies from your text messages to the computer!! Now how cool is that. The first thing that i used Lycos for, was to get an e-mail address. I did so, but I found it a bit on the slow side so I then changed to hotmail (thats another story). Then I found out that it could be used to send text messages too, which was a great thing for me because I never had any credit on my mobile.     Lycos was my first ever email account and I enjoyed it, it was a nice thig to begin with but then it deteriorated. I startred getting junk mail from the Lucos people in obsceene quantaties. it was like I was the sole target of a spaming campaign. I eventually gave up using the serbice, I still have the account just as a reminder of long gone times I think i still remember the address......... ah well. The server wasn't particulary fast neither in fact some times it used to be a nightmare other parts of the Lycos network dont have the problem so why does Lycos mail? ... more

    I have read the ops in this category and I am SO surprised at all the problems that seem to arise. I have been a lycosmail user ever since mailcity joint with it (last summer) and I have never encountered any problems described in the ops! I don't think it is just my personal luck either because I have a lot of friends who use lycosmail and they love it too! Lycosmail is my favorate mailbox (out of 5 others) and this is not just random likings. It is easy to view and the speed is relatively fast. The emails are received seconds after it is sent (which some others take ages). The memory is ... more

    I have read some of the others opinions and would like to add one of my own.I have been using the lycos.com site for only 2 months now mainly as a search engine or to play the games. On the whole the site appears easy to get round but you just try. the search engine side of things gives good overall websites to turn to for information, but thoose games. The lottery is ok, but then you find that you have to log in time and time again to enter the other games. this often results in the computer crashing. Have you tried a direct contact? very hard to find a email address or anything else. so as ... more

    I joined up with Lycos webmail last year as I was finding myself using their site more and more what with the reliable free SMS service to mobile phones. However I have pretty much abandoned my old email account with them due to the fact it takes so long for it to load up the pages. The reliable SMS service also seems to have slowed down a lot recently and often it doesn't work at all. The email service is much the same as that offered by Yahoo in that it is web-based and appears in a standard email program layout such as that you might have with Outlook Express or Exchange.     Disadvantages Disadvantages very Slow, always out of service, annoying advertisements

    I have used Lycos for nearly 3 years and although it has been upgraded once or twice since then, it isn't any better. The site layout is confusing and unorderly. When you log in, you are taken to your "Mail Home." From there, you can see your inbox summary. Once nice thing about it is that it will show the amount of unread messages as well as new, unread messages. The advertisments on the page are layed out very unorderly so that the page can be quite long at times. With multiple banner and pop-up advertisements, it gets really annoying.     Since Lycos 'updated' in 2006, I have been flooded with spam emails, sometimes up to 30 a day. Some are written entirly in chinnese, or other languages that I do not recognise, some do not contain my correct address, so how are they getting through. Some of my friends, who have my correct address, are unable to get through. I do not know why their service has become so bad, it seems to have all changed with their update. Before the 'update' I had on average 1 email a week from a source that I did not recognise. I have had enough and I am looking for a new account, one that I can trust to ... more
