    On the Internet there are many ways to talk to other people. Nowadays, the (instant) messaging programs like MSN and ICQ are very popular. But there is also IRC, or Internet Relay Chat. This way of communicating is a little more complicated and I think that’s why it isn’t as popular as it used too. MSN and ICQ are a lot easier to use. They're not as stimulating and informative as sites such as this - and, quite frankly, if it came down to it, I'd rather chew on tinfoil than bore myself to death on any chat line! (Ouch!)     I've been involved with IRC since I started university in 1997 when I no longer had to worry about spending too much time connected to the Internet at home. I had heard about it from a friend who had told me how to get connected, so I downloaded it, and installed it. It's a fairly small download at just over 1Mb, and installation is fully automatic once you decide where the installation directory will be.     Disadvantages Disadvantages Text-only, so can't use webcams or voice to communicate. Addictive too!

    In my opinion, mIRC always has been and always will be the only way to chat. It is just one of many "IRC Clients" - programs that allow you to connect to a protocal called IRC or "Internet Relay Chat" - but I believe it is by far the best. What's the IRC protocal? The IRC protocal allows users to connect to an IRC server and create their own 'channels'. A channel is a virtual room which other people can join and type to everyone else in the room, in real-time.     mIRC, a shareware IRC (Internet Relay Chat) client for Windows (download at www.mirc.com) has been around for as long as i can remember and it was written and created by a guy called 'Khaled Mardam-Bey, who just happens to be British. You have all probably heard of MSN, ICQ, Yahoo chat etc, but mIRC has something more to offer. The truth of the matter is that it is probably for the more advanced PC user as opposed to a new learner.     mIRC, makes IRC simple, perfect for newbies. Unfortunately it's IRC that's the problem, with bots, floods and DoS attacks (exlpained later on) it can be a pretty dangerous place. Forunately some rooms are full of nice people who you can chat with and make friends. Servers, this is quite comfusing to the newbie so I'll explain, there are many different rooms on IRC, for example one could be #myroom, however the rooms depend on what server you connect to, so if you connect to chat.planet.net and chat in #thedarksaiyans, connecting to irc.zirc.org and join #thedarksaiyans will bring you to an ... more
