Napster. The very name sends shivers of fear down the spines of record company executives the world over, and smiles of delight to it's users. For those that have never heard of Napster, glad that you've finally come back to Earth from where you have been living.
So what is Napster? It's a form of connecting PCs called peer to peer by many, although this is not strictly true as Napster needs a central server to access the database, for sharing MP3 ... ...computers over a network, which occurs on Napster when you start downloading a music file.

Napster is certainly causing a lot of headline news right now. The mp3 file sharing system has come under attack for not securing the service against copyright fraud. This has meant that people can download copyrighted songs for free - losing the record compnies an estimated revenue in the million pounds mark. It's hard to see how they can arrive at this figure though - but thats what they say.
I personally have used Napster almost a year. Shaun ... ...2million members using its software (this is rapidly increasing - especially with all the headlines it's making!). The site allows you to download some software (which is a relatively small program and downloads quite quickly - even on a 38.8k modem like mine). This software allows you to download MP3 files fgrom other users and visa versa.

Napster has been in the press so much lately. Its name is almost synonymous with that of MP3. It offers a service by allowing users of music stored on their PC to communicate with each other and to swap music files. For the price of a local call, which in some cases is now nothing anyway, users can spend about 10-15 minutes depending on modem speed downloading tracks that they want. A while ago I downloaded ‘Napster 2.0 beta 7’ because a male friend of mine had been going on about it for months, telling me how brilliant it was and how he downloaded scores of old tracks and loads of new ones. I’ve just downloaded the next version which is beta 9.6. It takes about 5 minutes to download the software from the site, which is very fresh and well planned out, but after you’ve started downloading it can get a ... ...away to my hearts content! If you were in the position of the major record labels or were a recording artist what do you think your stance would be on Napster? The artists are the people who should be listened to in my opinion. However there are so many people that receive a cut the decision will be taken out of the artists' hands in most circumstances. ...only thing I knew about Napster.com is that it lets people download MP3. files for free.
So out of curiosity I went to napster, downloaded their software, (which can be a bit tempremental at times) and signed up, in less than an hour and a half I had downloaded the software, signed-up and sucessfully downloaded 3 tracks. From that moment I was hooked. In under a week I have managed to sucessfully download around 80 files. My first impression of ... ...of typical rebels who will do anything to defeat the law. Even with this impression of the napster people, I was still ignorantly downloading files, simply becuase they are all free, fairly quick to download and i didn't have to leave the house.
However my opinion has changed since I read n opinion on ciao by a member whos nickname I cannot remember which opened my eyes as to the positive effects that Napster has had on some people.

I have been using Napster now for a couple of years and only found out about it from a friend. It was one of the best bits of information I have ever been given as I have not stopped using it from that day. Napster is a programme that allows any user, logged on to the site of course, to swap music they have stored on their PC's hard drive. I first started with Napster v2.0 BETA7 but now have BETA9 which has some extra facilities.
BETA9 is not used ... ...problem as people argue that there aren't as many songs to browse through but I find the download time a lot quicker through BETA9.
Anyway, I better tell you how Napster works hadn't I. You download the software from www.napster.com and set up your user name etc. When you are logged on, you can then go to the Search tab and type in any artist or song title, (or both for a more intense search) and napster will find you up to 100 files of people who ...

Napster is a service which has suited me for the last few years. It contains a large database of different genres of songs, and has many, many useful features.
The Pricing
Personally, I find it easier to make a once a month payment of approximately £15 for napster-to-go, or approximately £10 per month for the standard Napster, than to pay a certain amount per track, giving you unlimited download scope.
