Advantages Advantages Good quality writing; jobs section; Feedback!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Almost no photos or illustrations; no free archive section

New Scientist is an excellent magazine - it's probably the best general source of science news for the intelligent layperson, sitting as it does between the rather sensationalistic stories that make it to the newspapers and the utter incomprehensibilty of some parts of the "professional" journals. (Nature recently splashed on "self-assembly of icosahedral bilayers" - scrap the Big Brother exclusive, Mr Murdoch, this is the one to go for!) It's well written, well set out and not afraid to express trenchant views (particularly where the USA's attitude to Kyoto is concerned...). So one might ... more

Advantages Advantages very useful - contains a lot of information, comprehensive archives, loads quickly, easy to navigate, generally good.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages n/a

This the online version of the magazine. The stories are there, and though the layout's a little bland (i'm still lost without pictures) it's easy to navigate. The sites fast loading and archives of articles are comprehensive. It's a good place to look for information on any science or current affairs issue. For example I've just found an article about how science is helping identify genuine asylum seekers - radiology looking at changes in the bones and soft tissue which are characteristic of torture; it's stuff like this that makes the site (and presumably the print magazine) interesting - if ... more

Advantages Advantages New Scientist - but on-line

Disadvantages Disadvantages Redesigned site is not very good

The New Scientist website is one of my favourites. Every week they put some of the articles from the magazine on the website. OK, some of the articles from the magazine are left out, but there are often some really good articles on all sorts of different science topics. I find this a really good site, because I can't afford to buy the magazine every week and I can't be bothered plodding to the library every week to read it there. The website allows me to read some fascinating articles from the comfort of my own home. Also, there is an extensive catalogue of back issues on-line so you can find ... more

    Advantages Advantages Nice archive

Disadvantages Disadvantages Only free for 7 days!

After a two day discussion on a newsgroup about an article I could only just remember I was told the article in question was from New Scientist. The actual article was printed in 1997 (November 15th) Being a poor student I checked out the site hoping for free unrestricted access. Unfortunately this is unavaliable unless you subscribe to the magazine! However, the next best thing is a free 7 day access for students on the site. This is fantastic news for us poor students, but obviously should you require the research after the 7 days you have to stump up (they do good student rates as well) If ... more
