Advantages Advantages well designed, easy to navigate, great way of meeting people going to the same uni, doing the same course etc, free

Disadvantages Disadvantages lack of auto login, some areas still under development, colour scheme may present problems for some

~ WHATS IS IT? ~ Newstudent.org is a free website aimed at students who will be starting undergraduate courses at University in the coming September (although there are a few members who are in their second year at university and they are great for comforting terrified new students!) It is a way for students to find people who will be going to the same university as them, find people who will be on their course and chat to other new students about general topics and things like thoughts and feelings on going to university. I read a review about the site and seeing as I am going to university ... more

Advantages Advantages Really useful and informative

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be a bit on the slow side, is very addictive!

I've been a member of newstudent.org since around June/July 2004, and the site has proven invaluable to me through the whole university application process. When you join the site, which is a quick and easy process, you can fill in a profile for yourself, and choose up to six universities, to which you are, or are thinking about, applying. You can also select the course you are applying for, which is good as you can search for other users that are applying for the same course at one of the same unis. As yet, the course selection is far from comprehensive and for those applying for a rather low ... more

Advantages Advantages Great support mechanism! Very popular, very friendly people on there.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages TOO popular?

I was linked to this site from www.ucas.com, and I went on, due to my building excitement about going to Uni (University of Sussex, should I get my grades) and my thirst for any knowledge that would fuel this excitement. Registration was simple and free, you were given the option of adding up to 6 Universities that you were applying to, and this allowed you to view their forums. Each University has it's own section, with 5 forums. These are: Accommodation Courses Everything Else Fear and Excitement Social Life Within these forums, any other student looking at the University can make topics ... more

Advantages Advantages Lots of great members, good moderators, speeded up - hurrah!

Disadvantages Disadvantages No search facility, you get some stupid threads,

Is it really that time of year again? It's just under a year since I discovered this website, and oh where would I be now without it? For any of you applying to university whether you be 17-18 and doing your A-levels, or a mature student, or perhaps you have children about to apply to university - this is a must-see website. As someone who is absolutely petrified of uni in September 2005, it's been invaluable in gaining information on student loans to what course is best and which uni, as well as meeting lots of great people in the same position as me. ~~ Signing Up ~~ This is a quick and ... more

Advantages Advantages Meet future friends! plenty of useful info

Disadvantages Disadvantages Addictive, can be a little slow during peak hours

Newstudent.org is the place to be for students both already at uni and students who are applying. I discovered the website when i was checking ucastrack and saw it as an advertisement. From my own experience, it has helped me not only to decide what university is best for me but also has allowed me to meet new friends. This all helps to lessen the fear of beginning uni as you realise that you won’t be on your own! Newstudent helps you to do this. It has plenty of features and is improving as time progresses: Profiles: This allows you to make your own personal profile telling the rest of the ... more

Advantages Advantages Great place to meet people

    Disadvantages Disadvantages slow

Since October when my friend first told me about this website i have been addicted. As soon as i go online i have to log on to see whether there is anything interesting about my firm choice uni (Loughborough) or just in general what people have to say. The website is aimed mainly at people who have applied to uni and deciding on their choices, although mainy students who are now at uni still visit the website regularly. It is easy to register, just takes a few minutes of your time, which is nothing compared to the amount of time you will actually spend on the website once you are registered ... more

Advantages Advantages Well laid out, great community, lots of info.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Specific to a certain group.

The whole idea of going to university can seem a very daunting task for an 18 year old who has lived with their parents for their whole lives, especially if they do not really know anyone in real life who is in the same situation as them. This is where once again, the Internet can help us out. This site is based around a typical forum you would see all over the Internet, and as all forums do it has different sections for different subjects which a user may wish to discuss, most of the sections are about things like gap years, life at university and other things that a student to be might worry ... more

Advantages Advantages A brilliant place for new students to meet (hence the name newstudent)

Disadvantages Disadvantages The odd idiot here and there

I'm a little bias because I've been on newstudent since around July 2004. However, it's a great little community on the net and it's much the same as you would find at university - everyone meeting for the first time (even if it is monitor to monitor) and starting conversations, being friendly and helping each other out. The general forum is there to get to know everyone properly and there are other forums for the individual universities, which I think is fantastic. You get to meet people going to the same university and to others across the country, people doing the same course as you and ... more

Advantages Advantages great way to meet new people and find out about universities all over the UK

Disadvantages Disadvantages It can be a bit on the slow side

I was first introduced to newstudent.org when one of my friends in school told me about it. I've been hooked ever since. The site provides an enormous amount of help for students considering going to uni and you can post forums to find out about other people who may be considering the same uni or same course. You can also get first hand information from people already at uni. This is extremely helpful as you can find out what the accommodation is like and what general uni life is like. You can post in forums linked to your chosen universities and there is also a general section where everyone ... more

Advantages Advantages Very Active, Good resource for newstudents

Disadvantages Disadvantages Seems very primitive in some areas

This site as of today is 432 days old, and counting. (they have a counter to tell you this!) To be honest, this site is how i came to Ciao in the first place. I like this site very much, i've been using it since the early days of when this site started up. Since then, it has always been busy. This site has been under constant development ever since its started. The shop area, where they intend to provied students with deals for laptops, mobiles, holidays, insurance and internet access, doesn't really work very well. I just tried all the links now, and only the laptops link works. It takes you ... more
