UPDATE Please note that since writing this review Talk21 has been scrapped and users moved onto Yahoo so this review no longer applies but remains for historic curiosity. ---- talk21 is the free email service provided by British Telecom. There are many things to dislike BT for and this is no exception. I registered for talk21 about 5 years ago when there was not a lot of choice of free email services. I chose talk21 simply because at that time I could get a good email address (rather than the fredbloggs1234567 you would have had to have at hotmail or yahoo). However I don't know if this is the ... more

Advantages Advantages Adequate storage space (250Mb)

Disadvantages Disadvantages Worse than yahoo, no pop/smtp access, slow, banner ads, spam, features (like the free sms) have been removed.

**Update 27/4/2004** This is the synopsis of what has happened post team up with Yahoo. Basically talk21 has turned into Yahoo, but with a more unreliable sign in. Just join Yahoo mail instead. Compared to the old talk21 service, the new BT yahoo replacement has a much better interface and a slightly increased mailbox and seems a bit more reliable, so overall it seems like an improvement over the old talk21. However, a big disadvantage is that it no longer has POP or SMTP access unless you suscribe for their paid service. It's just a big advert for their paid service and not a particularly ... more

Advantages Advantages Lots of good features

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None as yet!

There are so many different web mail services out there that it's difficult to choose between them. Talk21 is run by bt, originally as a web based email service for btclick customers, although it has always been available to anyone who wants an account. The reason I first opened a talk21 account is that they have a service which will send an sms (text message) to your mobile phone whenever you get new emails. I was looking for a free service which did this, and this was the only one I found which was reliable. Since I joined they have improved this so that you also get the subject line of the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Reliable, fast, functional

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Nothing special

Bureaucratic Tendencies ... Barely Tenable ... Bloody Terrible ...Badly Turned Out ... Beautifully Tense ... Boringly Turgid ... Benefits Tiny ... Bodged-up Tools ... Buncha T***s ... Bendy Toes (eh?) ... Whatever!!! We've all got our views about BRITISH TELECOM and they're almost universally critical these days. Mrs D and I are as very unimpressed as anyone in this regard, but there is one offering in the BT stable which is difficult to fault, and that's the Talk21 free e-mail service. This is BT's contribution altruistically to the government's desire to get the UK on line and the 21 in the ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to use, you can send text messages, you can get talk21 through Outlook Express etc...

    Disadvantages Disadvantages not much!

When I first bought my PC I signed up for the Internet using BT Click (one of BT’s ISP’s) - this was about two years ago, and as I joined a BT internet service provider they recommended that I signed up to talk21 for my email. I have used talk21 ever since, as it’s a great site for email and sending text messages to friends mobile phones. There’s no problem with file space so even when you leave your account for a while i.e.: to go on holiday the talk21 account will have plenty of space to receive emails while you are away. The site is quick to load, and easy to use so ... more

I have become an experienced e-mail user. I have had a computer for over two years now and am coming to understand how the computer and the internet works. Since i have been on-line i have used the following e-mail providers, talk21, hotmail, yahoo, rocketmail and contactbox. Although i didn't use rocket mail to its full potential i came to understand that there was nothing whatsoever good about it compared to talk21. This opinion takes a brief look into why i like talk21 the best. Firstly i would like to compare it to hotmail. This was the first account that i opened up because everyone raved ... more

Advantages Advantages Features, Memory Size, SMS sending and notification.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sometimes quits, can be unwieldy until properly set up.

Well, some people like all of their e-communication handled by one site, one address, one communication form. By this, I mean that a singular site can be used in order to send text messages to mobiles (on any network), emails can be sent and recieved online, contacts can be kept, and text notification of emails can be sent to your mobile. This is in a way another form of a complete communication solution. Talk21 is ran by *with* btinternet, and is fairly efficient. Unfortunately, the site itself is fairly complex, which leads to a slow loading time, especially for those using a laptop or other ... more

Advantages Advantages EVERYTHING!! Free use of all of its services.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

MY OPINION: FREE FREE FREE and no your not seeing things! Talk 21's FREE email site gives you the choice and freedom of using all of its varied services and all at the cost of nothing. Unlike other leading free email sites and services i have come across, Talk 21 one has that little extra bonus provided with it and its called - realiability. Unlike other leading sites there is always a tie somewhere but with this one there really isnt any hidden disadvantages. With its choice of so many different services it also allows you to link up some of them with your WAP mobile phone, if you have one ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Server can fail quite regularly, slow site, avergage e-mail system.

Being an internet user who has never had a home connection, I think I can fairly regard myself as something of an expert in the field of free e-mail services. I've been through most of the field in my time, and found some good services and some not so good ones. Talk21 first attracted my attention around a year and a half ago. At the time, I chose it because my current free web-mail service couldn't handle attachments. I was also attracted by the stability that the backing of a major telcom would provide - in this case, BT Internet, which operates the service. However, in all this time, Talk21 ... more

Let's face it, there is no shortage of free email service providers out there. A random survey of twenty people will probably reveal that all 20 use a different email provider. In a fiercely competitive environment, I am surprised that the general level of service provided isn't much better than it is. BT Internet provode a free email service - Talk 21 - that anybody can have, regardless of their ISP. So, what does Talk 21 have to offer? Well, firstly there can't be that many users. When I first signed up, my user name choice was accepted immediately - recent attempts to open a Hotmail account ... more
