Advantages: It's free Disadvantages: Bad performance, design, bugs, adverts
UPDATE
Please note that since writing this review Talk21 has been scrapped and users moved onto Yahoo so this review no longer applies but remains for historic curiosity.

talk21 is the free email service provided by British Telecom. There are many things to dislike BT for and this is no exception.
I registered for talk21 about 5 years ago when there was not a lot of choice of free email services. I chose talk21 simply because at that time ... ...fredbloggs1234567 you would have had to have at hotmail or yahoo). However I don't know if this is the case any more now that there are a lot more people signed up.
I have used it for all of this time but recently abandoned it because it was becoming too annoying. Over the years it has hardly been improved at all. The only reason I stuck with it for so long is that I couldn't be bothered to inform everybody of my new email address.
Firstly, what ...

**Update 27/4/2004**
This is the synopsis of what has happened post team up with Yahoo. Basically talk21 has turned into Yahoo, but with a more unreliable sign in. Just join Yahoo mail instead. Compared to the old talk21 service, the new BT yahoo replacement has a much better interface and a slightly increased mailbox and seems a bit more reliable, so overall it seems like an improvement over the old talk21. However, a big disadvantage is that it ... ...for their paid service. It's just a big advert for their paid service and not a particularly good one. The old review is still below
----------------------------------------------------------
I'm writing this review of talk21 as I'm shocked and appalled that ciao still rates it in the top 5 free email providers. Having read some of the reviews I can understand why: most of the reviews that praise the talk21 service are over 2 years old. The current ...

There are so many different web mail services out there that it's difficult to choose between them. Talk21 is run by bt, originally as a web based email service for btclick customers, although it has always been available to anyone who wants an account.
The reason I first opened a talk21 account is that they have a service which will send an sms (text message) to your mobile phone whenever you get new emails. I was looking for a free service which ... ...which was reliable. Since I joined they have improved this so that you also get the subject line of the email.
I should say that I prefer to use a 'proper' POP3 account as my main email address rather than a web mail service, simply so that I can read and write emails offline, and use complex sets of folders and filtering. I use my talk21 account to forward messages to so that I know when I have important emails. I can then access them online if ...

Bureaucratic Tendencies ... Barely Tenable ... Bloody Terrible ...Badly Turned Out ... Beautifully Tense ... Boringly Turgid ... Benefits Tiny ... Bodged-up Tools ... Buncha T***s ... Bendy Toes (eh?) ... Whatever!!! We've all got our views about BRITISH TELECOM and they're almost universally critical these days. Mrs D and I are as very unimpressed as anyone in this regard, but there is one offering in the BT stable which is difficult to fault, and ... ...contribution altruistically to the government's desire to get the UK on line and the 21 in the name refers to the 21st century apparently. For a free e-mail service, Talk21 is an amazingly strong offering. It offers almost 5Mb of web space for storing the messages and there's a pretty unique filtering function which allows you to send off junk mail to a trash can or alternatively send all messages from an individual e-mail account into a designated ...

...THE SITE
At talk21.com you can also find links to other BT sites, which are just as fast as the talk21 site, the links include MUSIC, NEWS, ENTERTAINMENT and many more so it is a good idea to have this site as your homepage. Other email sites such as Hotmail also have this feature though…

The Address Book section on talk21 is called ‘Contacts’ and in this section of the site you can keep records of your friends email ... ...If you often send emails to a group of people then the ‘Groups’ section is very handy.
SMS NOTIFICATION
The SMS notification sends a text message to your mobile when you get a new email, and from scanning through other ciao reviews I hear that this feature is helpful.
Although I have never used it because I get far too much email and I doubt my mobile could cope with all the messages – and it would become an annoyance getting ...

I have become an experienced e-mail user. I have had a computer for over two years now and am coming to understand how the computer and the internet works. Since i have been on-line i have used the following e-mail providers, talk21, hotmail, yahoo, rocketmail and contactbox. Although i didn't use rocket mail to its full potential i came to understand that there was nothing whatsoever good about it compared to talk21. This opinion takes a brief look ... ...like to compare it to hotmail. This was the first account that i opened up because everyone raved about the oportunities it provided. Well, more like didn't provide. I wanted to call myself by my name, but being so popular it was already taken. I don't know if anyone is the same but i like a simple name without lots of underscore or numbers so i had to choose and unusual name with lots of numbers. On the other hand when i came across talk21, i wrote ...

Advantages: Features, Memory Size, SMS sending and notification. Disadvantages: Sometimes quits, can be unwieldy until properly set up.
Well, some people like all of their e-communication handled by one site, one address, one communication form. By this, I mean that a singular site can be used in order to send text messages to mobiles (on any network), emails can be sent and recieved online, contacts can be kept, and text notification of emails can be sent to your mobile.
This is in a way another form of a complete communication solution. Talk21 is ran by *with* btinternet, and ... ...complex, which leads to a slow loading time, especially for those using a laptop or other mini-computer device.
If you are abroad or not able to access your usual computer, you can have your mails from other accounts, such as a bt account, or a freeserve account sent directly to the 'online' mailbox of talk21. This means even if you take a holiday to floriday or Thailand and still want to read your mails you can!
The sms notification for emails ...

Advantages: EVERYTHING!! Free use of all of its services. Disadvantages: None
MY OPINION:
FREE FREE FREE and no your not seeing things! Talk 21's FREE email site gives you the choice and freedom of using all of its varied services and all at the cost of nothing. Unlike other leading free email sites and services i have come across, Talk 21 one has that little extra bonus provided with it and its called - realiability. Unlike other leading sites there is always a tie somewhere but with this one there really isnt any hidden ... ...it also allows you to link up some of them with your WAP mobile phone, if you have one and i have found that this has become incredibly useful as i can access intenet material whilst on the move. To my knowledge Talk 21 is by far one of the best and most reliable email sites on the net and i am about to explain why.

Being an internet user who has never had a home connection, I think I can fairly regard myself as something of an expert in the field of free e-mail services. I've been through most of the field in my time, and found some good services and some not so good ones. Talk21 first attracted my attention around a year and a half ago. At the time, I chose it because my current free web-mail service couldn't handle attachments. I was also attracted by the ... ...- in this case, BT Internet, which operates the service. However, in all this time, Talk21 has never managed to work its way any further up my "free e-mail" list than third place. I've always found other services to beat it, but that said, Talk21 has always been there and it does have an impressive array of services. Talk21 is part of the BT Internet network and as such the login page is littered with content from the various BT sites, not all of ...

Let's face it, there is no shortage of free email service providers out there. A random survey of twenty people will probably reveal that all 20 use a different email provider. In a fiercely competitive environment, I am surprised that the general level of service provided isn't much better than it is.
BT Internet provode a free email service - Talk 21 - that anybody can have, regardless of their ISP. So, what does Talk 21 have to offer?
Well, ... ...signed up, my user name choice was accepted immediately - recent attempts to open a Hotmail account were abandoned after attempt number 300 failed because somebody already had that user name. The pages of the email service are simple, and clearly laid, if not rather bland. There is a very basic colour scheme (except at the moment thanks to Comic Relief). The space allocated for message reading and writing is quite small, although this does seem to ...

Not only was I locked out from my previous free email account at Hotmail for two months whilst they carried out 'maintenance' (resulting in all my messages being deleted), but my account was also hacked into twice. Therefore I had no trouble severing my ties with Hotmail. A friend recommended Talk21 to me, and figuring it couldn't be any worse than Hotmail I decided to try it out. I am still with Talk21, and would not hesitate to recommend it to ... ...Talk21 aside from all the other perfectly good free email providers; one of these is the SMS notification service. Not only does this alert your mobile when you receive an email, but also says who it is from and what the subject is. This is particularly useful for those people with WAP phones; rather than spending a fortune needlessly checking their emails they can keep a constant track of their inboxes without having to access the internet at all. ...

If you want a free easy to use email service then you can't really go wrong with BT's Talk 21. The main page of the website (www.talk21.com) is a web portal with links to many websites and a few discreet adverts. There is a search engine bar at the top, the username and password bars, and a new user register button. Here you can choose to read messages, send emails and SMS messages, and also add and remove people from your contacts list (like an address book).
When you login it loads into your read messages inbox. There are quite a few ...

FREE ulimited SMS messaging to any mobile, thats one of the brilliant things about BT's free e-mail service. With BT's Talk 21 you get all the benefits that any other free email program would give you as well as some other extra goodies. Also BT's Talk 21 service allows you ... ...number and have your email read to you by an operator without having to be any where near a computer terminal. The most annoying thing is when you try to recieve an attachment with a mail it somtimes dosent work as the page which stores the attachments claims to be down. However if you ...

Advantages: Text message sent to mobile phone, access from any internet terminal Disadvantages: cause problems if large amounts of junk mail arrive
This is probably one of the lesser publicised free e-mail sites, I use it mainly for some of the more important e-mails that I send and receive, ( sounds good doesn't it). One of the good points is of course that you can send and receive the e-mails from anywhere in the world. I find it slightly more difficult to use than the more conventional sites like Outlook Express although they have improved the site several times recently and it is now easier ... ...up different folders to save your e-mails in if required.
I am also impressed that unlike Hotmail, there are very few items of junk mail sent to me here. (Hotmail I get between 20 and 60 Junk e-mails every day), in addition to the normal e-mails I get at Hotmail (another 10 - 40 every day).
I am also very impressed that I am sent a text message to my mobile phone every time an e-mail arrives, this would be totally impossible with Hotmail. It is ...
