Advantages Advantages good for travel planning and you can't get to a station

Disadvantages Disadvantages unreliable, no effective competition

I know loads of people have already reviewed thetrainline, but I think this is a good case of changing Consumer expectations - two years ago I would have rated this excellent but I don't think it has kept up with the best This is illustrated by an experience I had yesterday. I don't want to bore you, but the bottom line is that it would have been far quicker visiting a station and queuing in-line for a ticket thetrainline is a joint venture Virgin and National Express (who ran QJump) The url is ww.thetrainline.com The holding Company also owns QJump.com, the only rival. However QJump does not ... more

Advantages Advantages easy to use and convenient

    Disadvantages Disadvantages extra charges

Occasionally I have to travel by train for work, and rather than queue up for tickets on the day of travelling, someone recommended thetrainline.com to me so I thought I would give it a go! Before writing this review, I was just scouring some of the very negative reviews written about the trainline previously and I'm wondering if they have completely reviewed their service, as my experience was pretty positive although I do have one or two niggles. First, a little about the site itself. It is apparently the largest independent retailer of train tickets and the best thing is that you can use it ... more

Advantages Advantages easy to navigate web site

Disadvantages Disadvantages charge for credit card payment

I have been using thetrainline for quite a while since I work in another city and travel frequently during weekend. But as it introduced charging fees for credit card booking, I switched to virgin. But still most time I check tickets on thetrainline. Generally speaking, apart of credit card charge I think this is a quite good web site for booking train tickets. Even after I switched to virgin, I found it was powered by thetrainline. And I can use the same username and password for both systems. The web site is designed in a very clean and friendly way. On the main page, you can search ... more

Advantages Advantages No queuing, good prices, quick service, simple

Disadvantages Disadvantages you're going to be using a train!

Let's face it, public transport sucks. That might seem like a harsh attitude to have towards a public service, especially to people who don't have their own private mode of transport, but compared to public transport services in other countries, Britain's network of busses and trains is a pretty poor standard to set. But having discovered how much I'm costing him in pence-per-mile expenses to get up to York and back, my employer has asked me to consider using the train to get from my house to our offices in York. Here cometh the first problem - I live in a backwater village. To get to a train ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

It was late in the evening, it seemed that it was going to rain and I was too tired as I came out of the Liverpool station. That’s nearly one year ago, a boy handed me a leaflet that said Glasgow return for £1 only. I looked at the leaflet and then the boy and said in my mind‘ YEAH RIGHT!’ I rolled the paper in my hand looking for a dustbin when I saw my bus coming and rushed towards it to catch it not realising that the paper was in my pocket now. That night when I found the leaflet in my pocket I thought let’s check out the website. The offer was by Virgin trains and ... more

I’m a big fan of purchasing things online – I can’t think of any activity I’d rather do less than trawl around busy shops on my days off from work. I’ve become quite used to ordering all sort of things online, but one thing I’ve never really seen the point of is ordering train tickets online. Given that you have to actually get on the train when you make the journey, I can’t understand what gain there is to be had in ordering tickets online. Having experimented with thetrainline.com over the last few weeks I can conclude that there are two main ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to drive system. Rapid delivery. Well designed site

Disadvantages Disadvantages Nothing special, more functional than anything

I’m not a frequent user of trains; in fact the last time was in the infamous Petrol Crisis of 2000. However in the week ahead I (and 120,000 others over 3 days) am going to see Robbie Williams “sing and dance” in Milton Keynes. The dilemma was how were we (four of us) going to get there? We could drive – I know MK fairly well, as I commute down to the new city on a daily basis. Only problem is that means one of us i.e. me, cannot have a beer!! We can catch one of the coaches laid on by Way Ahead – the only issue here is that they want £15 each just to take us from ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages postage, and card charges

As a part of my having fun plan after confirming I have a hotel booked it occured that going to Birmingham and drinking the night away would probably make driving home the next day somewhat dangerous. So turning to the ever present cashback sites to look for a cheap and reasonably reliable way to get to the drinking city and then home again. As was almost expected the train was the easiest option, booking online being a way to attempt to get a few pennies back on it via a cashback site. Finding the traintimes is very simple, type in the station you want to leave from, and the destination ... more

Advantages Advantages Can book train tickets online

Disadvantages Disadvantages £108.75 MORE expensive than booking by telephone

Contemplating a train journey to the south of England, I read a few reviews about thetrainline.com and was keen to put the site to the test. Other Ciao members had recommended this online booking service as being a good and efficient way of buying train tickets, and like anyone, I am keen not to waste money! Unfortunately, on my first visit, the site was not working, so later that evening I tried to log on once more, this time with some success. Joe Public may not know what all the various terms on the site mean, so before using the site it would be a good idea to learn what all the different ... more

As some of you will know Dave (my partner) has recently started his new job as a consultant and now has to travel to different places all over the British Isles. Next week he is going to Haverfordwest in South Wales and intends to stop in a hotel in Tenby. Now this sounds just my cup of tea so I shall be going with him on this occasion. The complication is that Dave will have to travel down on Monday and, due to my work commitments, I can’t go until Tuesday. That’s the background information as to why I decided to access the website www.thetrainline.com I was impressed with the ... more
