could be so much better......

Advantagesgood for travel planning and you can't get to a station

Disadvantagesunreliable, no effective competition

"I know loads of people have already reviewed thetrainline, but I think this is a good case of changing Consumer expectations - two years ago I would have rated this excellent but I don't think it has kept up with the best This is illustrated by an experience I had yesterday. I don't want to bore you, but the bottom line is that it would have been far quicker visiting a station and queuing in-line for a ticket thetrainline is a joint venture ..." Read review

A green light for thetrainline.com!

Advantageseasy to use and convenient

Disadvantagesextra charges

"...day of travelling, someone recommended thetrainline.com to me so I thought I would give it a go! Before writing this review, I was just scouring some of the very negative reviews written about the trainline previously and I'm wondering if they have completely reviewed their service, as my experience was pretty positive although I do have one or two niggles. First, a little about the site itself. It is apparently the largest independent retailer ..." Read review

Great Web Site but Charge for Credit Cards

Advantages easy to navigate web site

Disadvantages charge for credit card payment

"I have been using thetrainline for quite a while since I work in another city and travel frequently during weekend. But as it introduced charging fees for credit card booking, I switched to virgin. But still most time I check tickets on thetrainline. Generally speaking, apart of credit card charge I think this is a quite good web site for booking train tickets. Even after I switched to virgin, I found it was powered by thetrainline. And I can use ..." Read review

If Only The Trains Were This Quick

AdvantagesNo queuing, good prices, quick service, simple

Disadvantagesyou're going to be using a train!

"...The latter part is where thetrainline.com excels. thetrainline.com is one of those sites that works due to its elegant simplicity. It professes to be nothing more than a website from where you can purchase train tickets; it's as simple as that. There are spin-offs from the site, understandably, that allow you to book UK Hotels or theatre tickets at the sister site seeyoumonday.com, and their online store offers car hire at your destination and ..." Good habits do pay off

AdvantagesBook from the comfort of your home. Saves time and money.

DisadvantagesNone

"...option at all. The site Thetrainline.com is owned by Virgin trains and it’s the same thing if you book through Virgintrains.co.uk or Trainline.com as you only have to register once and your same account is valid for both sites. The only difference is that on trainline.com you can book for any train company. It’s always better to check out the virgin site first as there is 90% chance that you’ll find a special offer. Few months ..." Read review

THE MAIN LINE TO CUTTING RAIL FARES

AdvantagesSee review

DisadvantagesSee review

"...ordering tickets online. Having experimented with thetrainline.com over the last few weeks I can conclude that there are two main advantages to using the site. Firstly, for the off-peak traveller, there are considerable savings to be made on fares. Secondly, when ordering tickets in this way you combine ticket purchase, with seat reservation and journey information all in one swoop. The layout and design of the website is rather uninteresting. ..." Read review

Ticket To Ride

AdvantagesEasy to drive system. Rapid delivery. Well designed site

DisadvantagesNothing special, more functional than anything

"I’m not a frequent user of trains; in fact the last time was in the infamous Petrol Crisis of 2000. However in the week ahead I (and 120,000 others over 3 days) am going to see Robbie Williams “sing and dance” in Milton Keynes. The dilemma was how were we (four of us) going to get there? We could drive – I know MK fairly well, as I commute down to the new city on a daily basis. Only problem is that means one of us i.e. ..." Read review

Get on your trainline from home

Advantagesbook tickets quickly and easily

Disadvantagespostage, and card charges

"As a part of my having fun plan after confirming I have a hotel booked it occured that going to Birmingham and drinking the night away would probably make driving home the next day somewhat dangerous. So turning to the ever present cashback sites to look for a cheap and reasonably reliable way to get to the drinking city and then home again. As was almost expected the train was the easiest option, booking online being a way to attempt to get a ..." Read review

The Great Train Robbery .com

AdvantagesCan book train tickets online

Disadvantages£108.75 MORE expensive than booking by telephone

"...read a few reviews about thetrainline.com and was keen to put the site to the test. Other Ciao members had recommended this online booking service as being a good and efficient way of buying train tickets, and like anyone, I am keen not to waste money! Unfortunately, on my first visit, the site was not working, so later that evening I tried to log on once more, this time with some success. Joe Public may not know what all the various terms on ..." Great site shame about the prices

AdvantagesGreat for gathering information

DisadvantagesThe prices are higher than elsewhere

"As some of you will know Dave (my partner) has recently started his new job as a consultant and now has to travel to different places all over the British Isles. Next week he is going to Haverfordwest in South Wales and intends to stop in a hotel in Tenby. Now this sounds just my cup of tea so I shall be going with him on this occasion. The complication is that Dave will have to travel down on Monday and, due to my work commitments, I can’t ..." Read review

Virgin CAN get things right

AdvantagesQuick, efficient, secure, everything Virgin Trains isn't!

DisadvantagesCan be slow at times

"Anyone who regularly travels by train will be used to all the delays (particularly if you travel by Virgin Trains!) and queues associated with rail travel, not just the travel itself, but the purchase of tickets and travel enquiries. Anything that can reduce the stresses involved is good in my books, and Thetrainline certainly does this. Thetrainline is owned by Virgin Trains, but unlike the trains themselves, this works very well. It is a portal ..." Read review

Just the Ticket

AdvantagesEasy to access, prompt, reliable

DisadvantagesPity the trains aren't

"The trains may not run on time but ordering train tickets on the net is fast and efficient using www.thetrainline.com During the last twelve months my son has been using the train to travel significant distances from home to university. Not having used the railway network for some time, we soon discovered that the cost of the ticket could be a bit of a lottery. Travelling from Wolverhampton to Exeter, the cost of a return journey with a Young ..." Read review

Choo Choo

AdvantagesGood search and advanced bookings

DisadvantagesSlow at times.

"...its place. The main aim of thetrainline.com is to supply users with times of trains that travel around the UK, hopefully taking you to your destination at the appropriate time, and then to hopefully make you purchase ticket(s) from them. My first purchase was very recently, as I need to go to Manchester, from Cambridge, to visit a University Open day at UMIST. To find out what trains are available, you enter the location from where you are travelling ..." Read review

As simple as...

AdvantagesQuick and hassle free

DisadvantagesBeware of the attempt to charge insurance

"Thetrainline is a site I have used on many occasions. In fact, it is my preferred method of purchasing train tickets due to the simplicity of the operation and remoteness of my village, with the nearest town railway station unable to sell tickets. The option then remains to purchase tickets on the train when it arrives, which I am happy to do on shorter journeys but somehow having a long-distance ticket in your hand before you step onto the train ..." Useful but sometimes unreliable

AdvantagesOrder from your home, cheaper

DisadvantagesSometimes some ordering problems

"...thing that annoys me about thetrainline.com is the limitation on the times you can book your tickets. Now maybe I'm a bit of a night owl, but I would like to be able to order my tickets late at night, but the system doesn't allow you to book between certain times (11:30pm and 4am as I recall). This can be rather irritating, but it may be something inherent in the rail booking system that they can't get around. Overall, despite it's shortcomings, ..." Read review
