Advantages Advantages Quick, efficient, secure, everything Virgin Trains isn't!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be slow at times

Anyone who regularly travels by train will be used to all the delays (particularly if you travel by Virgin Trains!) and queues associated with rail travel, not just the travel itself, but the purchase of tickets and travel enquiries. Anything that can reduce the stresses involved is good in my books, and Thetrainline certainly does this. Thetrainline is owned by Virgin Trains, but unlike the trains themselves, this works very well. It is a portal through which you can purchase rail tickets in advance of travel, not just for Virgin Train routes, but for any rail journey in the country. You have ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to access, prompt, reliable

Disadvantages Disadvantages Pity the trains aren't

The trains may not run on time but ordering train tickets on the net is fast and efficient using www.thetrainline.com During the last twelve months my son has been using the train to travel significant distances from home to university. Not having used the railway network for some time, we soon discovered that the cost of the ticket could be a bit of a lottery. Travelling from Wolverhampton to Exeter, the cost of a return journey with a Young Persons’ Railcard varied between £20 and £40 depending upon the number of days in advance you purchased the ticket and the time of departure ... more

Advantages Advantages Good search and advanced bookings

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Slow at times.

This site is an online ticket booking and ordering for trains around the UK. To begin with, it is an excellently designed site, although slow(ish), it is still very user friendly and self explanatory. First, to use the site, you must register and then log in, this part only requires your name and email address, so that should you add anything to your "basket", for example, it will save it and if you log in again, you should find it in its place. The main aim of thetrainline.com is to supply users with times of trains that travel around the UK, hopefully taking you to your destination at the ... more

Advantages Advantages Quick and hassle free

Disadvantages Disadvantages Beware of the attempt to charge insurance

Thetrainline is a site I have used on many occasions. In fact, it is my preferred method of purchasing train tickets due to the simplicity of the operation and remoteness of my village, with the nearest town railway station unable to sell tickets. The option then remains to purchase tickets on the train when it arrives, which I am happy to do on shorter journeys but somehow having a long-distance ticket in your hand before you step onto the train gives a feeling of relaxation and assuredness. This review will look at thetrainline site, from its general look to the efficacy of the ordering ... more

Advantages Advantages Order from your home, cheaper

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sometimes some ordering problems

Travel has become a big part of many people's lives these days. The spreading out of people from their home towns to get bigger and more successful jobs has meant that people have more cause to travel – to visit relatives, to go to work, or even just to go on holiday. But in these days of increased travel, we need systems to cope with the demand for bookings and enquiries. thetrainline.com is a service provided for the usage of the country's train users. The rail service has, let's face it, been a little 'below standard' in recent times, but it's nice to see a site that can not only ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheaper tickets and easier to buy

Disadvantages Disadvantages Only really any use if you book a week or so in advance

Whenever I buy train tickets at a railway station I always find that I end up repeating myself over and over again to get the information across for my journey details. Not just once - every time - so when I found thetrainline.com I thought it was a great idea - and, generally, it is. I first used the system over a year ago and haven't looked back since. I'll never buy another ticket at a station again if I can help it. The service puts you in control of where you're travelling from, and to - including any preferred routes (ie, via station ???) - departing or arriving at a specified time and ... more

Advantages Advantages Relatively easy and hassle free, £1 off travel

Disadvantages Disadvantages Site can be slow, have to register

Booking tickets online can sometimes be a lengthy and anxious process (once you click, that’s it). I have used thetrainline.com for nearly a year now and the following is how I find the site and service: THE SITE The first thing you need to do before you go anywhere, is to register which can be annoying if you’re just wanting to find out information in general about traintimes. The advantage to this however is that when you enter the site and book tickets on another occasion, your address will be stored. Once registered, you can begin check times and prices. You will need to fill ... more

Advantages Advantages Can try out different journey or ticket combinations, easy to navigate, tickets sent promptly, better than queuing!

Disadvantages Disadvantages sometimes can be a little slow if site is busy

Unlike the train services have been of late, this site is actually reliable! Owned by Virgin, it enables you to book and to plan your journeys on line. Of course, you could do this on the phone – but on the phone chances are you would be put on hold for quite a while, be paying for the call however long it took, and could be speaking (as I inevitably did) to the person who had only joined the company that day. Furthermore, there have been many times on the phone that I have been given false information – my mum and I actually decided to test this once, asking for information about ... more

Advantages Advantages I don't have to queue for a ticket

Disadvantages Disadvantages Timetables take some getting used to

Train Tickets? I have never bought one in my entire life! Dr. Beeching axed my local railway station twenty-seven years ago. I had an annual season ticket for three years, which I’d buy once a year from the ticket office at the Railway Station in the sleepy Surrey town I lived in as a teenager, to take me to my job in London, but I have never stood in a queue and actually bought a ticket. I still don’t understand the twenty-four hour clock… On a recent business trip to London from darkest Dorset, I drove to Croydon, broke down twice, and decided at that moment to make my next ... more

Advantages Advantages much better than queuing, can compare prices for journeys

    Disadvantages Disadvantages lots of screens

I’ve started using the thetrainline.com again for booking my train tickets after losing faith in the tickets that were available as I always seemed to be to buy cheaper tickets for the same journey at a station. Maybe it’s because the train companies are issuing more cheap tickets to get us back on the trains, or because less people are buying tickets, but this year I have been able to buy the cheap tickets via thetrainline.com. The best feature is the recent journeys section where you can view details journeys you have booked, making it easier to compare prices and check if a ... more
