    Advantages Advantages Lots of extras

Disadvantages Disadvantages Very hard to use extras

Tripod used to be one of the leaders along with geocities in free webpages and e-mail accounts to go along with them, however, through a series of stupid mergers the company is trying to be too much like it's counterpart, Lycos, which is defective in itself. I have nothing personally against Tripod really, I have no vendettas or axes to grind, I just know a lot about them through a lot of web experience using their free webpages and web management tools. Tripod is one of the few webpage providers that's been able to design an effective web development community, while you don't feel a ... more

Advantages Advantages FREE and easy to use with expansive space on offer

    Disadvantages Disadvantages The "Unbearable Pop-ups"

Tripod is the easiest web hosting site to use, the largest and one of the fastest (Considering these services are classsed as "read slow"). But its pop-up windows containing advertisements are making me look for another web hosting company. I signed up to the site about one month ago, and as a first time user, I found Tripod an excellent site due to its partner FTP software called Trelix Web. I actually found that you could host a site on Tripod for free by accident. I did this when I bought my new computer that had Trelix Web pre installed. As I was playing around with making a web site, I ... more

Advantages Advantages Free web hosting, free scripts and site building tools

Disadvantages Disadvantages The ads plaster your web page, they're everywhere!

Tripod was once a independent web hosting site but was recently taken over by Lycos. When I first started out designing web pages and needed web space, tripod was one of the sites I used for web space. Free web space is always good. It is a great way to get your web site online with the minimal amount of knowledge of what it takes to create, upload and maintain a web site. The design and navigation of this web site is great and everything is easy to access and get to. There are plenty of extra tools and scripts available from complete designed web pages where you only have to add your text and ... more

    Advantages Advantages free

Disadvantages Disadvantages bit slow at times

I was lloking for a way of setting up my own web page and Tripod seemed a cheap (Free in fact) way of doing this. I have checked out a number of different options but none are that impressive. Tripod offer free web space and a number of tools to help you build your web site. You can access the site by ftp and upload or download files to your site. It has been a bit slow lately but they apparently moved to new servers last night so hopefully it should improve. This is a good way of getting into your own web page for nothing ... more

Advantages Advantages Free, very easy to use, "pods" of like minded sites to generate publicity

    Disadvantages Disadvantages pop-up window

Having used Tripod.com for my first website because of the large amount of webspace available and the ease with which their software enabled me to create pages, I leapt at the chance to have a UK site when the UK branch opened. You get 100mb to use on your site and I defy anyone to use that much without resorting to major downloads or video clips. If you're looking to earn money from your site or simply generate publicity then Tripod offer "Pods" where you can be easily found under a relevant topic. Each month a site within the Pod is made "Best of Pod" and featured on Tripod for all to see ... more

    Advantages Advantages Free

Disadvantages Disadvantages Banner ads on pages

http://www.tripod.co.uk/index.html I have put three sites up on Tripod and have found them OK. Apart for the banner ads that pop-up on each page, that is unless your register and pay for a domain name. I haven't used the Homepage Builder as it is very basic and does not allow you to create a very pleasing site. I would think that a newcomer to web page authoring may have a little trouble using their builder. I would suggest learning something like Frontpage and uploading that to your Tripod web space. Tripod does support Frontpage Extensions so you will have no problem putting page counters ... more

Advantages Advantages free 50 megabytes of space, easy to use, easy upload

Disadvantages Disadvantages mandatory banners either as window or flashing

jamphil claims to be able to remove tripoid banners from his site. Not so. They are there and very annoying too. I went to trouble of registering for the 50Meg webspace but do not want banners so will not use the site. I know that advertising is a great source of revenue but one wants to maintain some sort of control over what appears under one's name, at the very least one should be able to keep flashing banners out. Tripod's Help mentions that under certain conditions the banners can crash a site and that is a definite no-no. ... more

Advantages Advantages User friendly & simple

Disadvantages Disadvantages Annoying pop-up banner ad

Tripod are very flexible. They support FrontPage Extensions, so you can allow things like hit counters and search boxes on your page. They have a step-by-step page editor fore complete beginners. You can also use an FTP client to upload your site. Unlike most service providers, they don't put annoying banners on your page. They have a pop-up banner ad that appears in a seperate window. This can be annoying, but it doesn't put unwanted things on the page. Tripod are good all-round. They are well-documented, and they have a Member Area where you can add all sorts of things to your site! It's ... more

Advantages Advantages FREE, 10MB, easy to navigate and use, lots of tools

Disadvantages Disadvantages The banner pop-up, if oyu do not incorporate the advertising on oyur web page

I've been with Tripod (albeit the American site) since 1997, (Tripod UK since 1998) and I think it's the best webhosting place you could ask for. For starters, it's FREE and they give you 10MB, but that's not all. It doesn't matter if you are a novice at the whole web-page game or an absolute HTML superstar - the site is easy to navigate, and there are tools for all levels of webmasters to create great looking pages. They cater for everyone. Uploading files is easy, and what's really nice for the non-techno, is that they take you through stuff in easy-to-understand language. Some things, step ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to use, lots of templates and wizards,

Disadvantages Disadvantages banner and pop ups on all web pages, less features for advanced users.

I used tripod to make my first web site and I was impressed with the results. The only problem is that the display a banner and a pop-up on every page which is annoying. They give you 50megs of space and have a wide range of wizards guiding you through the steps of making a web site. They have a good range of templated so if you don't have any good graphics, there is no need to work. Tripod has a html editor that can be used for advanced users. They support cgi (Common Gateway Interface) so you will be able to enhance your site with all the good features like forms, guestbooks, link databases ... more
