This opinion contains information and the job of UCAS, and what you should do to help yourself along the way. Are you currently studying in year 12 (First year of A2's)? If you are then this opinion will contain details and personal experiences which will help you through your process. I will start by pointing out that 'The University Colleges Admission Service' is not affiliated to any Universities, it is an entirely seperate body that acts as a go between for you. Depending on your school/college you will start your process at different times, however, the closing date for applications is ... more

Advantages Advantages Great service - you'll need it

Disadvantages Disadvantages A stressful time of life!

If you're a student in the sixth-form, someone saying "UCAS!" might make you want to scream. Especially if it's a teacher telling you to finish filling in your UCAS form. ARGGHHHH! If you don't have a clue what I'm on about, I had better elaborate... **~~WHAT IS UCAS?~~** UCAS stands for University and Colleges Admission Services. To get into higher education (degrees, HND's, that kinda thing) you have to apply through UCAS. They're like the middle man in applying to uni - you won't hear directly from the colleges, you will only hear from UCAS initially. UCAS also deal with clearing when A ... more

UCAS.COM UCAS stands for University & Colleges Admissions Service. I had some experience with this site when the online apply system was first launched back in 2004. I was working in Student services at a college at the time and had to upload tutor references for students on to the site. This past year I have experienced using UCAS as a student myself. What They Do UCAS is a central admissions system for All Higher education institutions in the UK. They are not affiliated with any institution. They managed applications to HE courses by processing the applications and helping students make ... more

    Advantages Advantages quick/cheap/efficent

Disadvantages Disadvantages does not allow applications to Oxbridge universities

99% of British higher education institutions (universities) are members of UCAS, so if you want to go to one, you'll need to apply through UCAS.co.uk. Once you've signed up, you can submit a single application containing a list of up to five university choices with the course you're applying for (the courses need to correlate e.g. geography for all 5, or geography for 2 and earth studies for 2 say). All of these choices are confidential so the universities and colleges won't be able to see your other ones. All applications must be completed by January (about the middle), ready for the ... more

Then, let me tell you about this site ucas.com What is UCAS? Well……. “it is the UK central organisation through which applications are processed for entry to full-time undergraduate courses, HNDs and university diplomas. The mission of UCAS is to promote the partnership between prospective students, universities, colleges and schools” First, for ... more

Advantages Advantages Have you seen the directory?

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not a lot for those of you not interested in filling in your UCAS form

This site is a god send. If you have ever seen the UCAS directory, current size resembles the yellow pages, then you will appreciate how helpful it is when stored in easily searchable form on the web. The site is basically a list of every university and university course in the country. This list is searchable, by course, university and area. It includes all the info anyone applying needs, the ability to order UCAS forms as well as bits on sponsership and NUS cards. There are a few small pieces of advertising but not much. The best thing about the site is its facility for tracking your ... more

Advantages Advantages a great source of information and it saves a hell of a lot of time.

Disadvantages Disadvantages sometimes a little slow loading.

Ucas.com is a very useful website for finding out about courses that you would like to study. When I was looking for the course that I wanted to study I went straight to ucas.com because you can run a course search. This saves you time because you don’t have to look through a million and one prospectuses (also environmentally friendly). When you have run your search you can narrow the results down to exactly what you want. You can sort them by regions, alphabetically and points required. When you have got the courses you want the website offers good links to the university homepages and ... more

Advantages Advantages Absolutely brilliant and doesn't get you annoyed because it is fast and provides the info that you want

Disadvantages Disadvantages No pictures - just the bare info

I am in the process of choosing AS/A2 Level options and decided to check out the UCAS website to see if the subjects that I had chosen would be acceptable to enroll on the course that I wanted at the university that I was aiming at. I was amazed at how quick, helpful, easy to use and effective it was and it saved me a lot of time - rather than going to each and every university website. I think that it is better than trawling throught the big, thick UCAS book. In short - it was a god send. ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages n/a

I was recommended to visit this site by school and I went on it and found it was the most informative site on university entrances I'd seen yet. It was very easy to use and follow and was jam-packed with information, which is very useful. It gave me all the information I needed to know on different universities and gave me all the links to other websites I needed. Then last week I was given the directory in school, and I choose to have it on CD, which I found much more useful than the book as the searches make it quick and easy to find the information required. A very helpful site! www.ucas ... more
