    Napster is dead, file sharing isn't. In fact, since the demise of Napster(well its dead as far as I am concerned) file sharing has just increased in volume rather than it being stamped out as the music industry had hoped. Now, you have access not only to MP3s, but software programs, images, documents and even complete movies if you have the time and patience to download 400MB+ files on a 56k modem!     Disadvantages Disadvantages as with any downloading software, be prepared to wait!

    This opinion is basically going to go against anything I've ever thought to myself about writing opinions, as I'm not really technically minded and vowed not to write opinions on computing matters, but for this I will make an exception. Since the whole Napster collapse, I've struggled to find a download program that was anywhere near up to it's standard, but I think I've done it. After trying various others, such as AudioGalaxy, I thought I was going to have to give up on sampling the variety of music that the world has to offer, until I read a review on winmx here the other day.     Advantages Advantages Fast, Peer to peer file sharing. Lots of users & files.

I have been a user of Napster (as you can see by an older opinion of mine) for a long time, but when file transferring stopped, I needed something to fill that empty void. For a while I did without, yes, I did try Audiogalaxy, but it's web page/satellite interface I could never get on with. A friend then told me about WinMX.     This piece of free software has been my best software addition for some time. Music fans with an internet connection will find this very useful. Its basically a music file sharing software similar to Napster, only much better in my opinion. It has a search engine which quickly scans a hugely impressive database, well, of internet winmx users from across the world. This means that whatever song you are looking for, from whatever era, will almost certainly be found.     This site offers the finest peer-to-peer file sharing program, free to download. Before I begin, this is more a review of the program that is available to download from this site than of the site itself - the site exists solely to promote the program. Peer-to-peer file sharing is a tricky business. I sampled Napster before it died, I dabbled with Gnutella, Bearshare and a couple of lesser efforts, but none seemed worth the bother.     When Napster disappeared earlier this year because of the greedy record companies filing multiple lawsuits claiming they breached copyright laws, well then i had no program to share and download music. I searched around for a while looking mainly on downloads.com, I tried like every file sharing program and none of them came up with the napster clone i have dreamed of. The initial software (approx 1.6 mb file) is easy to locate and download from a convenient list of mirrored servers, with a location to suit your own neck of the woods. Installing it is also easy.     Advantages Advantages Fast download speeds and connection to the server. I always, without fail get hundreds of search results for whatever I'm looking for. The ability to resume incomplete downloads.

    As I’m sure is the case with just about everyone reading this, Napster was ‘the’ best thing on the Internet until it’s untimely death earlier on this year. Well… it hasn’t really died, more gone away for a while, to regroup and come back as a fully subscriber only service. However, the opportunity for free music from Napster has probably disappeared.     WinMX, I'd never heard of it either, but it's the best thing since Napster by a long way. I never got on with Audiogalaxy, the website was too slow for my personal preference, and I disliked that silly satellite thing. Imagine my curiousity when I saw this on www.download.com ... I was willing to give anything a shot! The program was 1.6mb to download, and is freeware. I got version 2.6. To look at, it's a lot like Napster. However WinMX is a total file-sharing utility.     Well it looks like Napster is really starting to dry up on the MP3 file's front. Certainly if you do find what you're looking for then the chances are that you'll be kicked off mid-download. Still it was good while it lasted. My stance on MP3 is this. I don't think the audio quality is as good as cd, there's just something that's a litle flat in the low end for me and it has a bit of a compressed sound. I don't download MP3 files to get the latest sounds for nothing. It's purely so I can listen to the track before the album comes out as I don't buy the over-priced singles in the stores. I ... more
