Written by Robert Kiyosaki & Sharon L. Lechter this book is the story of Robert Kiyosaki and tells of how he grew up under the influences of his real dad, a well educated man in a very good job but who remained poor all his life and the dad of his best friend who despite little education became a very rich man and taught Robert some very valuable lessons.

I personally find this book is a remarkable eye opening read. It brings to your attention facts that you never even thought to question, such as despite many years of education at an early age, most people are never tought how to effectively deal with their money and how we are educated by schools and told by our parents that we need to get a good job, earn money and buy a house and this will be our biggest asset, whereas the author shows how the house is nothing but a liabilty.

The author defines assets as income generating products such as shares, bonds, rental properties etc. and tells of how to get ahead you must become financially literate, learn to take educated risks and build a long term portfolio instead of calling your plasma tv an asset and just working harder and harder whilst never actually getting richer.

I think the majority of the book should be considered as slightly common sense (making sure you clear your debt as soon as possible, not wasting money etc) although there are some very good thoughts and ideas that should put you on the right path to sorting out and improving your financial standings. Anybody that thinks this book is a guide to making money quick should think again though. It is more of a motivational guide to how you should be looking at money, how you should be thinking about the future, become financially literate and setting goals to achieve.

The book is well layed out and very easy to read. It is just shy of 250 pages long and although it does tend to go over the same thoughs and theorys a few times, it only helps to drum home the realtity of the financial situation that most if us are in and the path we should be taking if we really want to change our lives.

I personally would recommend everybody read this book. It does certainly change the way you look at finances and your own wealth and it has given me some great ideas with regards to teaching my kids (when i have some) about how to look after themselves financially. I would say that this book is the first step to becoming financially literate and certainly a must read.

Happy reading.
