the thought of 400-plus pages of talking rabbits?), Richard Adams' bunny-centric epic rarely fails to win the love and respect of anyone who reads it, regardless of age. Like most great novels, Watership Down is a rich story that can be read (and reread) on many different levels. The book is often praised as an allegory, with its analogues between human and rabbit culture (a fact sometimes used to goad skeptical teens, who resent the challenge that they won't "get" it, into reading it), but it's equally praiseworthy as just a corking good adventure. The story follows a warren of Berkshire rabbits fleeing the destruction of their home by a land developer. As they search for a safe haven, skirting danger at every turn, we become acquainted with the band and its compelling culture and mythos. Adams has crafted a touching, involving world in the dirt and scrub of the English countryside, complete with its own folk history and language (the book comes with a "lapine" glossary, a guide to rabbitese). As much about freedom, ethics and human nature as it is about a bunch of bunnies looking for a warm hidey-hole and some mates, Watership Down will continue to make the transition from classroom desk to bedside table for many generations to come. --Paul Hughes

Advantages: Great read Disadvantages: NA
...Great Book: Maia by RichardAdamsRichardAdams' Shardik was one of the first adult novels I ever read as a child (I read it before his better known Watership Down) and I can still remember the powerful impression the opening chapters made on me. I have reread Shardik several times now, however, and what most impresses me most about it is the depth of the historical and sociological detail - it reads like an extremely well researched historical novel, although it is about a completely imaginary country and peoples.
Thanks for reading this review. It is a definite read and i reccomend you do buy it or read it.
Can be bought for low prices even on amazon if you are thinking of reading this book. It is great if you are a fan of richardadams as well...

Advantages: Compulsive reading Disadvantages: Too difficult for the average child to read.
...Well I'm sure a lot of you know what Watership Down is about, either from watching the animation or hearing from others, but I don't think you can fully appreciate RichardAdams' story until you read all 496 pages. It tells the tale of Fiver and his brother Hazel leaving their lifetime warren because Fiver senses a "bad danger" on the way. Follow their journey along with the other rabbits that dared to leave their warren and their owsla (the equivalent of rabbit police) for the dangers of the outside world. They experience many perils along the way and a few tragedies occur but eventually they reach their destination, a safe secure warren, only to realise the have no does and so no more kittens! And so the journey begins again…...
