The first thing many readers will think when looking at this review is "oh my god" how ugly is that camera?", and possibly as a secondary thought, "who the hell are Ricoh, didn't he once manage Arsenal?". The answers to these questions are so obviously yes, it is a ugly mother of a camera and no, that was Bruce Rioch, but I stray from the subject matter so on with my thoughts on the camera.
Cost & Availability:
I will admit here, I don't own the Ricoh Caplio R6, but I have used it regularly now for over 4 months both larking around and while giving serious demonstrations to the potential buyers. More often than not the price is a big turn off with most customers. We are an independent electrical retailer and we have this item tagged at £279.99 in our shop but this does include a 2GB memory card.
The cheapest I have seen this camera is online for £199.99, but it only had a 1GB memory card. You will struggle to find this camera in places like Comet and Currys but shopping around will result in your finding it for a reasonable price. Whatever you do though, don't pay more than £250 for it with a 2GB memory card if you are a casual user.
Size, look and feel:
The camera is the worlds smallest to include a 28-200mm optical zoom lens in a 20.6mm thin body. I cannot stress enough how nimble and easy to hold this camera is and as far as I'm concerned, it may lack looks, but it makes up for it by being super-lightweight and a doddle to use.
In terms of build, the camera feels solid, takes bumps and knocks well and the 2.7 inch LCD screen at the rear has a strong protective covering giving that additional peace of mind.
Technical Stuff:
7.1x wide-angle zoom lens High-quality design. Vibration correction function High-performance 7.24 megapixel CCD and image processing engine for high resolution pictures Diverse range of original functions Large, high-resolution LCD. Long-life rechargeable battery for approx. 330 shots. Skew Correction function
My thoughts:
We have on display all three of the R6 models as they comes in different colours and I have to admit that the quality of the images produced is simply the best I have seen from the sub £400 digital camera range we hold in stock. The resolution and clarity of the images produced could not be better and coupled with the anti-vibration feature makes it virtually impossible to take a bad shot.
The battery life is superb and goes on and on for days without the need for recharging making this a good intermediate digital camera well worth taking a closer look at. If you are a casual user you should seriously look at the Easyshare or Cybershot ranges rather than the Ricoh Caplio R6.
Advantages: Cheap, excellent images, screen is non reflective in the sun. Disadvantages: Looks, the name
I have owned this camera for some time now and i love it! As another reviewer has pointed out that looks are not to everyones taste but several people have said to me how nice it looks, and different, and I am of the same opinion, Personally i think it is a very good looking camera, something that not many people will have. I have yet to come across another person with the same camera as myself, and for someone who always wants something different ... ...The quality of the images from the camera are exceptional, I have compared them to other peoples images that have been taken with SLR cameras that have cost in excess of twice the amount i have paid for mine, and in most cases the difference is negligible, and don't forget this is a compact camera ie something you can slip into your pocket and not something you need an entire back pack to carry around. As pointed out to me by the professional in ...

Advantages: Features, looks, lens zoom range Disadvantages: Reliability
...Buyers beware! I think Ricoh have pushed the lens/body ratio a bit too far to the point of serously affecting reliability. My daughter was really upset as it failed 1/3 way into her holiday & it was her pride & joy - she really looked after it! Won't buy a Ricoh camera again - when you spend £170 on a camera you expect it to last longer than 9 months! ...

I liked this camera and bought it at a keen price better than quoted here. Sadly I have just returned the second one because of a fault. The first one went back because of pixel problems on the lcd screen and whilst the second one also appeared to have the same problem the main reason was a blotch probably on the sensor. I hope my next one which wont be a Ricoh wont have any problems.

Advantages: Good Picture Quality Disadvantages: Not the best looking camera
I find that with camera's you are best off sticking to Sony, Kodak and other high profile makes. They are easy to use, they come with more accessories and attachments and often have longer guarentee's. This is a very good camera, however it isn't the best looking one out there, perfect if it's a present for a bloke, but you'd be better off getting something easier on the eye for a lady, because although it's not all about looks, they do count! Picture ...
