A healthy baby, thats all I want, I can still hear myself saying now, would you like a girl or aboy ? We all answer just a healthy baby.
Well Jamie was born 6th October 1997 weighing 9lbs 3oz, 12 hours of labour, a few tears later, & There he was, My second bundle of joy. What more could you ask for. all jamies checks went ok, we were home within 2days, Jamie was slightly Jaundice but nothing to worry about, his big brother ben was not to sure, he just pulled his socks every time he went near him, funny little thing.
So we got on with it, changing nappies, feeding, lack of sleeping & getting old very quickly. Jamies 2nd birthday was soon here & jamie had not started to speak yet, so off to the doctors we went, he thought Jamie was deaf, or at least had a hearing problem, I assured him I knew he was not deaf.
8 months later & several hearing tests there I was sat in aroom surrrounded by health proffesionals all focasing on Jamie, i'm sure my heart missed abeat, a lump was wedged in throat& every time they asked me a question, i'm sure I was going to start crying, but no I did'nt you have to be strong when you are A mum I just answered the questions & watched. This amazing woman called Mary played with Jamie, she made him smile & he did his funny laugh, it was so heart warming, so nice to see someone else having fun with my son. They asessed him for about 1 hour & then went off to discuss there opinons & the outcome. I knew when they came back into the room my life was going to change forever.........
They said that they would see him once a week for six weeks & then review him after that, but Autism was a very high possabilty. That was all I heard nothing else, I don't remeber anything, they asked if I wanted to ask anything ? I said no. Did this make me look like a bad mum i thought, but I needed to go.
We got in the car, Jamie sat next to me in the front, he looked up at me as though he knew something was wrong. We drove home, such a lovely hot sunny day outside, but life felt lkie it was in a thunder storm, I could'nt take anything in, my eyes were filled with tears. My life had changed, but jamie had'nt & I love Him so much.
At home I just wanted to know more, they had given me some leaflets, but I needed to know more. I went on the net & looked it up, some was very heart warming & reassuring others were depressing & negative. I went to the local bookstore, but it was too much.
So about one month later after disscussing what would be the best for jamie, i got this book RIGHT FROM THE START. I had to order it off the net as it is an amercian bok as they are so far advanced then us, nothing new there. It is a great book written in a very friendly style, apart form being based on amercian health laws, it was excellent. it has parents views through out the book, which I could relate, It was nice knowing that it was not only my little boy that does he funny little things. It discuss chioices you can make for childs education, although we do not really have those choices here, It was an accurateaccount of the treatment that is used for Autism. Something i needed to know befor I could choose the best for Jamie.
All autistic children are different & get on better than others, but as parents we need to know more, as a country we need to know more. If I tell any of my friends, collegues ect..i get one of two responses ' Is thst what rainman had' or ' thats the children that throw temper tantrums '.
Jaime is avery handsome boy,he looks completely normal from the outside, but just can'nt get to grips with this reality stuff on the inside, but thanks to this book & lots of medical help, speacialy Mary & Donna i know I will get my soon to his best potential.
