I was wandering around my local Superdrug recently, having a pregnancy induced funny five minutes that saw me feeling very sorry for myself, when I spotted a nice and bright row of nail varnish bottles on the Rimmel stand, deciding that I deserved a little treat I decided to make the most of the 2 bottles for £4.50 offer and was immediately drawn to a green colour, unsure of what other colour to purchase I remembered I'd been thinking of getting a girly pink shade and so selected a metallic looking salmon pink and headed off to the till, I couldn't wait to get home and try out my new Rimmel 60 seconds nail varnish and hopefully cheer myself up a little.
Rimmel have released several nail varnishes in the past that promise to dry in 60seconds and this is just the newest in a long line of different varieties and styles, coming with a "pro-cision" brush it claims not only to dry in 60 seconds but also only require one coat, give a high shine and a fantastic colour. It is available in 8ml bottles and a wide variety of shades including-
"Green with envy"= obviously green "Starlet"= that metallic pink I mentioned "Blue me away"= a deep blue "Stardust"= a metallic bronze/gold tone "Pearly Pink"= an iridescent pink "Black out"= black of course "Delicious dark"= a deep purple ………………..and many other shades. You can pick up Rimmel 60 seconds in most pharmacies for £2.99 per bottle.
Applying the polish is much the same as any other brand, a simple matter of unscrewing the lid and using the brush to apply the polish, now I'm not quite sure of the aim of the "pro-cision" brush as it looks just like a regular brush, however the bristles do seem to splay out quite far covering a good amount of nail space which makes applying the polish a little quicker and easier. The polish is of a decent consistency not too thin and runny but just enough to be smooth and easy to apply, as with all nail varnishes it does have a bit of a smell to it but it's not a choking overpowering smell and is easily bearable as you apply it to your nails.
I tried out the pink polish first and immediately noticed that one coat was not going to cut it, as a top coat to apply a little metallic sheen it might work but not if you're looking for a solid colour, after I'd painted all my nails I left them to dry and was pleasantly surprised to find it did indeed dry within the 60 second mark, the effect of the polish was really pretty and shimmery, a real girly shade. It took a further 2 coats of the polish to get the solid colour I desired and it was apparent that while coat 1 may dry in 60 seconds subsequent coats took a lot longer, still it's an improvement on many other brands which take several minutes per coat and are still tacky to the touch.
I didn't apply a top coat which I think I should have done as the polish started to show signs of wear after 3 days without the top coat, whereas when I tried the polish again with a top coat I got 5 days or more with only minor wear to the tips of the nails. The polish didn't seem to chip or crack even though I'm quite a hands on person with lots of physical jobs like gardening and housework to take care of, rather it gradually wore down at the tips and edges of the nails. Removing the metallic polish was a little tricky, I used my regular Superdrug nail varnish remover pads but it took an awful lot of elbow grease and 2 pads to remove all the polish, still once it was finally removed my nails were still in great condition and has no signs of damage or staining. Life with the non-metallic green polish I had chosen was a little easier in terms of removing it and it wiped off a lot quicker as there were no glitter like particles to tear up the polish remover pad.
While the jury is out on the pink polish I am completely in love with the green one, it's the nicest shade of green I've come across in all my nail varnish using days, it's a rich deep tone with a lovely shiny finish, with a top coat it can last up to and beyond 5 days of abuse, I've not only done regular housework and gardening wearing the polish I've also moved furniture and packed boxes, but even after all of that the polish still looked great. Don't get me wrong the metallic polish is great quality and looks fab' I'm just not sure if I actually like the individual colour.
So far I'm totally won over by this brand, the colour tones are great and it seems to have a good life span. While it may not totally live up to it's 60 second one coat promise it still does a brilliant job, is easy to apply and looks great, being a Rimmel product also means it's affordable which is great for someone like me, I love my bright bold colours but can't afford such expensive nail varnishes as Ruby & Millie, to me Rimmel 60 seconds provides just the same great level of colour and life as these more expensive brands at a fraction of the cost. Highly recommended!
