I'll never forget my first make-over. I was about 16 and I can't totally recall how I got that free make-over, but I do remember that this was when my love for pinky, glittery eyeshadows began, which has continued to this day. It was also the first time I had my eyebrows plucked. What makes me remember the whole incident even more clearly was the reaction I got from a classmate the next day. One boy kept looking at me during almost the whole class period. I was hoping that the boy was noticing my new beauty and thickly applied confidence. However, my bubble was burst when, at almost the end of class, he pointed straight at me and shouted out "oh, my God, she has no eyebrows"! I must have gone bright red, and could only rejoin with "yes, I do, they've just been shaped, that's all". To this, he replied "yeah! Shaped out of existence". I could have crawled under a rock, but could only say "then don't look at me", to which he just laughed - joined by several others in the class.
Kids can be cruel, can't they? And things like this can stick with you all your life. In fact, I'd say that I'd been a bit pre-occupied with my eyebrows ever since. But having had a mother who, bless her, used to practically paint on her eyebrows, I was a bit wary of ever trying to use anything on my brows. And those old ladies who you can tell draw their brows on can be totally absurd looking, can't they? No, I'm a classy person and that type of make-up was just too over-the-top for my taste. But ever since that fateful day, I had a niggling thought that there was something a bit missing in facial accoutrement. Still, for over 25 years I did nothing about that niggling.
When I first joined Ciao, someone reviewed an item that was an eyebrow powder pencil that sounded pretty good, but I never came across any of those in the shops I frequented. I also thought of using my mascara to heighten my brows. The only problem with both of these solutions is that you have to have fully formed brow hairs for the powder or mascara to stick to for it to work. Well, I happen to be one of those women who has a nice, but pale brow line near my nose, but the hairs seem to disappear completely as they reach to the outer ends of my eyes.
One day, I was wandering around the Israeli version of Boots, looking to see what was new, when one of the cosmetic ladies approached me. Apparently, she saw me looking at different pencils while fingering my eyebrows. "Looking for an eyebrow pencil?", she asked. Well, actually, I wasn't, but I was certainly beginning to think about it. My slightly wary look must have told her that I wasn't in the mood to spend a whole lot of time or money on this item. That's when she showed me the Rimmel Eyebrow Pencil.
This looks just like any kohl or lip pencil. The only difference is that the top for this pencil has a little brush on it which is meant to be used to brush the hairs of your brows into place. Since I don't have much eyebrow hair, this does me little good, but I can imagine that those with unruly eyebrows would find this a very useful little addition. And, of course, it makes it easy to distinguish this pencil from your kohl eyeliner pencil.
But what does this pencil do that makes it necessary instead of using, say, a regular kohl pencil or even mascara on your eyebrows? Well, I'll tell you that right now (you impatient so-and-so!). This isn't your usual pencil as it will first and foremost colour the hairs of your brows. Its almost like you're applying a clingy powder and not writing with a pencil at all. This will give you as natural a look as is absolutely possible. Furthermore, once you get to an area where there aren't enough hairs to colour, then you can draw the missing bits in. From watching a "Style Challenge" many moons ago, I learned that the best way to do that without it looking like your 3 year old went wild with a felt-tipped marker on your face is to not draw a line, but rather, to make little brush-like strokes and "feather" the colour onto the area. Works for me!
Since this pencil is very soft, since it is almost like having a powder in a pencil shape, you will find that you have to sharpen it quite a bit more often then you would a eyeliner kohl pencil or even a lip pencil. This doesn't really bother me except it means that you'll need to buy them more often. However, since they aren't all that expensive (about £2 at Boots), this isn't any reason for me to mark this product down by a star.
However, I can't say that this is waterproof, since it isn't. But I've found that in the summer when its very hot here and I sweat a great deal, it never seems to make streaks on my face. Still, this can come off your brows quite easily - a bit too easily, in fact. Again, I can't drop this by one star because to tell you the truth, I wouldn't want this to be too difficult to remove. And at least it doesn't irritate my eyes (if you all recall, I wear contact lenses and so my eyes can be very sensitive), so since this doesn't flake off, that's a very good thing!
If you look a the Rimmel web page (information below in the Technical Stuff area), you'll see that this comes in four shades - Black, Dark Brown, Hazel and Blonde. Although I'm actually a darkish blonde, I've chosen the Hazel colour as my favourite. I originally used the Dark Brown one, but I found that if I wasn't careful, I looked a bit like a clown. Now I keep what's left of the Dark Brown one on hand for quick touch-ups in case I'm going out at night and don't have a chance to get home from work in between. The Blonde one looked a bit too light for me, and I think it would be best used by women who are naturally dark and have dyed their hair lighter and want their brows to closer match their hair colour. The Hazel one is almost exactly the shade of my hair and so it looks very natural. So much so that when I don't feel like putting on make-up, I'll just quickly use this eyebrow pencil and a touch of lipstick. That's just enough to make me NOT look like an extra in the movie "The Night of the Living Dead". (I'm a scream at Halloween time, and I don't have to put any effort into it at all, trust me!)
I'd have to say that the bottom line for this product is that for me, its really got the "write stuff" (yeah, I know, bad pun)! Never again will that nasty boy's voice from High School haunt me or taunt me, for finally, after all these years, I've GOT Eyebrows!
Thanks for reading!
~~~~~ Technical Stuff: They have a web page at http://www.rimmellondon.com and it will show you the range of their products, but not much else. I paid £2.69 for this pencil at Boots which is half of what I paid for the same pencil here in Israel! I call that a good price. ~~~~~
Advantages: Cheap, nice and soft Disadvantages: Colour doesn't quite match for me, lack of staying power
...had great experiences with the Rimmel range before I was willing to give this a try on the basis that you can't really go too wrong with an eyebrow pencil! It is available in supposedly 4 colours, however, my Boots only ever stocks two colours - hazel and dark brown. Apparently it's also available in blonde and black. Being a dark brunette the dark brown was the obvious choice for me. The pencil looks pretty average - much the same as any other kohl ... ...comb on it. In my opinion this is utterly pointless - what kind of bush woman really needs to comb her brows? If they're that bushy you pluck them! The bristles are also very bushy and thick and feel cheap and scratchy on the skin. Not a real issue for me though, since I don't use it. The pencil itself feels very soft and goes onto the skin almost like a powder. It works to coat the hairs and also fill in the gaps, giving a smooth and perfect looking ...
...money.
I do feel that Rimmel make up tends to be by-passed by some who feel that it is maybe a bit on the cheap side but I have had many Rimmel products that have done me proud and I still continue to be a regular Rimmel purchaser.
I saw this Professional Eyebrow Pencil in Superdrug and at £2.65 it was well worth trying.
Strangely enough the Rimmel pencil only comes in two shades, a lighter brown called Hazel and a dark brown. Usually there will ... ...has been discontinued.
This Rimmel eyebrow pencil is nothing special to look at, just an ordinary pencil with the soft coloured lead at one end and a cap at the other end but the cap has a small `toothbrush` attached to it so that you can groom your eyebrows.
I chose the darker brown to match in with my own brows, the Hazel brow pencil would have been far too light for my colouring.
The first step is to tweeze away any unwanted stragglers, making ...
Advantages: Affordable, has a small brush too, good colours. Disadvantages: None really if you're not heavy-handed.
...several eyebrow pencils, but my Rimmel is now a long-standing favourite, as it comes with a little brush on the lid with which to tame my brows once I've pencilled them in. The brush makes a big difference, as it seems to shepherd my brows into a nice arch.
The pencil itself comes in four different shades, of which I can only comment on the Dark Brown, as this is the one that I use. The others are Black, Blonde and Hazel.
The pencil goes on nicely, ... ...find that using light, short strokes of the pencil gives a really natural effect. Once I have done this, I use the brush to blend the pencil in with my actual brows, and voila! groomed eyebrows.
For such an inexpensive pencil (about £2 when I bought it) it really has lasted very very well, considering that I use it every time that I wear make-up. I've had mine for over a year, and there is still a lot left. I'm sure you could find this for a bargain ...
Advantages: easy and even application Disadvantages: brush, wears off.
Anyone who knows me knows that I obsess over my eyebrows.
Years and years ago, I used to shave my eyebrows off entirely, going for this kind of look http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c117/creeper__/Pho224.jpg. Don't get me wrong - I still love this kind of look if executed well, but it's not to everyones tastes. Anyway, I've been growing them back for almost two years now, and they're almost back completely, hurrah! (Quick tip for anybody looking ... ...or when you've overplucked, apply olive oil or castor oil if you can get it to your eyebrows at night...sounds strange, and I'm not sure how this works precisely so I don't know if it's 100% safe, I've never had any problems but do this at your own risk). They're quite patchy, extremely thin and honestly, because I wear a lot of makeup, it looks odd if I don't do my brows too. Anyway, enough guff about me and more about the pencil..
There are a ...
...my eyebrows. I finally found Rimmel Grey 005. It seems now that this colour has been discontinued. Does anyone know where I locate any??? I have tried Hurricane Grey 164 Eye Liner pencil but they are too soft, not as hard as the Brow pencils. Maybe it is because I live in BC Canada that this particular shade of Rimmel's Eye Brow Pencil 005 Grey is no longer available as an Eye Brow pencil. The black is too dark, the brown, blonde, Hazel are not GREY. ...
French manicures in my opinion, are the most sophisticated and stylish nail look. However, I always find that "Do it yourself" kits don't always give you the professional results you wish for and often the pink colour is too pink. I prefer a more natural look so thought I'd try buying just a tip whitener rather than wasting my money on a kit which included something I always threw away (the pink polish).
I'm not a beauty buff and I don't spend loads of money on beauty products, but I do like my nails to look nice. They all grow pretty evenly and I trim them down to about 1cm each. They're not very strong and chip quite easily so I have to be careful not to paint them too often.
I bought the tip whitener on offer, it was 3-for-2 on Rimmel products and since I was buying Rimmeleyebrowpencil and a Rimmel Clear Polish I thought I ...
Advantages: Good range of colours, thin pencil for precise application, leaves brows groomed and perfect, Disadvantages: You use the pencil quickly
I think there is nothing that can quite transform your face as much as a nicely groomed set of eyebrows. I admit I can be slightly on the obsessive side when it comes to plucking and grooming mine and when I finally had a little bit of spare cash recently I decided to replace my not very impressive Rimmeleyebrowpencil with MAC's snazzy Eye Brows pencil.
MAC produce this pencil in a good range of colours which means there should be one that will suite any complexion: Strut (a mid toned brown), Fling (an ash blonde), Spiked (bottle brunette), Lingering (a hazel brown) Stud (a rich blackened brown), and Velvetone (film noir black). As a dark brunette I chose Stud - my eyebrows are actually black, but I find black eyebrowpencil is just a bit too much for me, so Stud was the perfect choice.
The first thing to note about Eye Brows is that ...
