I have been looking for a cheap every day eyeliner that I can wear without it looking too obvious. After trying numerous liquid liners with hopeless results, I decided to settle for this Rimmel soft kohl eyeliner as I thought it would be a whole lot easier to use.
Ingredients origins/uses
Kohl (from the Arabic kuhl) is a mixture of soot and other ingredients worn by both women and men to darken the upper eyelids and as a mascara. It was traditionally used as far back as 3500BC as protection from eye ailments and to protect eyes from the Sun's glare. It was also believed to strengthen children's eyes soon after birth. Studies in the 1990s showed that some varieties of kohl posed a health risk due to the high content of lead within them. But now manufactures use different methods to produce it and the term 'kohl' only refers to the colour rather than the content of the cosmetic.
The product claims
This eyeliner claims to provide soft, smudgeable, fade resistant colour in a very easy to use formulation. It gives dense colour application, which can be blended into the lid for a softly smudged look. This all sounds very appealing and seems like a number of different effects can be achieved from this one useful product.
The look of the product
This eyeliner looks like a thin pencil crayon with a plastic cap on one end of it. It has quite a nondescript look about it, with little decoration on the outer coating apart from the colouring. The outer coating has the brand name Rimmel and the product name soft kohl eye pencil printed on it in white lettering, which makes it fairly bland. When you take the plastic cap off the end of the pencil, the kohl tip is revealed. You will notice that this colour is quite a bit lighter than the colour on the packaging, but when applied to the skin it does reveal the correct colour. The texture of the kohl is very soft which makes it easy to apply to the skin in one, fluid movement.
Choosing the right shade for you
When looking for a suitable eyeliner shade, it is important to consider your natural colouring, as some shades will clash more than others. You will need to think about when you are going to be wearing the eyeliner and the effect you want it to give. If you have blue eyes soft browns, gold or pink tones look best, whereas if you have green eyes yellow, khaki brown and lilac tend to be most complementary. If you have brown eyes, most shades suit this colouring as long as they are darker or lighter than your eye colour. As a general rule, the lighter the shade the larger your eyes will look and contrasting colours will make them stand out more.
Creating different looks/how to use
This eyeliner is available in 7 shades: 081 loveable lilac, 031 jungle green, 064 stormy grey, 071 pure white, 061 jet black, 021 denim blue and 011 sable brown; not exactly the most extensive range, but a number of looks can be created from this limited palette of colours.
For a summer look: Line the top lid with shade 081 loveable lilac and use a brush to lightly smudge the colour out towards the outer corner of the eye. Then use shade 031 jungle green to lightly mark out a line along the lower lash line, joining it up with the other shade at the corner. This looks great in the warmer weather as the colours are so bright and cheery that they will instantly bring some colour into your face and will match the lighter hues of the summer wardrobe. I found this look easy to create using this liner as the colours blended with relative ease and only smudged when I wanted them to.
For a more natural look: use either shade 061 jet black or 011 sable brown, depending on the colour of your eyelashes. Carefully dot the colour between the upper lashes and then lightly blend in. This is a good everyday look as it makes the eyelashes look much fuller and thicker without having to apply mascara, which could save time when getting ready for work. Yet again this eyeliner didn't fail, as I was able to apply the colour precisely without making any mistakes.
For something dramatic: I would suggest using shades 071 pure white and 061 jet black. Carefully pull your upper eyelid taught and apply a bold line of white eyeliner onto the inside lash line to make the eyes stand out. Then dot black liner along the upper lash line and join up the dots to give a definite line. Reapply until you are happy with the effect. This look is a little trickier to master, but becomes easy after practice.
The best thing I can advise to do is to experiment and find a look to suit your individual colouring, as everyone is different.
Lasting power/ease of removal
This eyeliner certainly lives up to its promise of fade resistant colour as it easily lasts 12 hours without melting like so many others do. This is useful as it means the eyeliner only needs to be applied once and will last all day, making the crayon last longer overall. The only problem with this is that it makes the liner difficult to remove once it's actually on. The best thing I can recommend is to use a sensitive eye makeup remover and apply it to the lids. Then wash of using your normal cleanser and you should find that most of the colour has been removed. This is one of the few negatives with this product and can be especially irritating after a night out when you can't be bothered to take special care to remove your makeup.
It is worth noting that the pencil should be sharpened regularly using a specialised sharpener in order to keep it hygienic.
Price and availability
The Rimmel brand is available at Boots, Superdrug, Lloyds pharmacy, independent chemists and selected supermarkets throughout the UK, so it is easy enough to find. This eyeliner can be purchased for £2.99, which makes it one of the cheapest around and offers excellent value considering that it is a well-known brand of a good quality.
Does it live up to its promises?
In terms of providing fade resistant colour, then yes, as this eyeliner will certainly last all day to the point of being rather stubborn to remove. The colour it provides is fairly bold when first applied and can be toned down by simply smudging it into the eyelids to give you flexibility in the looks you create. Even with a limited palette of colours, there are many shades within these colours that can be used together.
When it comes to ease of use this eyeliner is very user friendly as there is very little that you can get wrong in application. The formula of this liner makes it soft and very smooth to apply to the delicate eye area.
Advantages
- Priced at £2.99 it is one of the cheapest eyeliners around. - The colour lasts a long time. - It is easy to apply. - One stick lasts about a year when used everyday.
Disadvantages
- Limited range of colours. - Packaging is fairly dull so it may be difficult to spot in the shops. - It isn't waterproof.
Overall, I am very impressed with this liner as it is such a good quality for the price and certainly competes with other well-known brands. The only slight disadvantage for me is the limited range of colours on sale, but as stated earlier a number of looks can be created from them. Another slight problem with this product is the packaging as it is quite dull, which may cause difficulty when trying to find it in the shop, but I suppose at least you will know to look under the Rimmel section. I would recommend this product to anyone who likes to experiment with different looks on a budget.
Advantages: Creates smokey eyes, Easily removed Disadvantages: I didn't get on too wlel with sharpening this product, wears off quite easily!

...good. I have tried the Rimmel liquid eyeliner and the special eyes eyeliner, but this one is definitely the best.
It is fairly cheap priced at only £2.99 in Boots and it lasts for ages. I use it every day and I buy a new one once every three months.
It is very light weight at only 1.2g, and can easily be stored in a handbag. It has a plastic lid which protects the eyeliner itself and is the size of a normal pencil.

I use the eye liner on both the upper and lower eye lids. It draws a really good line on the upper lid and the same on the bottom. The only problem that I have had is that because it is so soft, after a few hours of wear it rubs ...

Advantages: Cheap, cheerful, easy enough to apply and nice for a daytime look Disadvantages: Irritates my sensitive eyes
...I hadn't tried a Rimmel eyeliner before and I actually picked one up and then put it back remembering a horrific experience involving a Rimmel mascara a while ago that gave me such a bad eye infection after I couldn't remove it properly so I was seriously in two minds as to whether to take the risk again but at the price of £2.93 for a large size and the colour being exactly what I had in mind I decided to risk it.
