The machine itself is quite solid, similar to a normal largeish portable CD player. It is not one of those slim line versions.
Sound quality: is as good as I could expect from MP3! I have it plugged into my hi fi (no not a small mini hifi - I am talking about proper setup Tannoy 636 floor standing speakers etc.) Obviously not as good as a proper CD, but I am very happy with the sound output. You are able to adjust the output via a built in equalizer. Which alters the base and treble automatically. There is no function to alter them manually. Also the volume adjust the line out output! Which I thought was a bit strange. But overall very good sound quality!
Functionality: Comes supplied with remote head phones. They seem okay, though I haven't fully tested them. I have no intention of using the machine as a portable device it will stay permenantly connected to my hifi system. The display is large and back light constantly with a green light (this is probably as I have it connected to the mains). The text is easy to read, and the long titles scroll across. Actual navigation your the mp3 structure on your cd is very easy (after you have read the instructions, on how to select the track to play!) using a 4 direction circular pad. It has the usual modes of playback random, repeat etc. My only disappointment in this area is the fact that I am unable to find out what directory the current mp3 that is playing is located. So if I catergories them in generes I am unable to tell which one it is in. But perhaps some more fiddling will enable me to find a way around this. Plus the screen has these dancing men that flick back and forth across the screen whilst playing. These prove to be very annoying and serve no purpose what so ever. Would be nice if you could turn these off .. or get rid of them completely and allow that part of the screen to be used for maybe more text info or a moving graphic equalizer?
Plus you may have read like I did in several magazine reviews that the player takes some time in counting the tracks when u insert the CD. What a load of rubbish... 187 tracks it loaded the CD in about 5 seconds or less. In about the same time it takes for my amplifier to warm up and turn on. I mean if you can't wait that long then u really shouldn't have enough time to be listening to music in the first place.
I would also would have liked a infra red remote control! Now that would have been excellent and would have completed a nearly perfect package!
Overall an excellent device, it has made my life heaven! I can now listen to music the whole day without getting up from my desk to change a cd! I love it!
Advantages: Music on the Move , And Very Cheap after initial set up Disadvantages: Cost of initial set up (if you dont already have the kit)

The Rio Volt portable costs 149.99 GBP from Amazon UK and the following blurb is taken from their sales guff:
“The Rio Volt portable MP3-CD enables you to listen to standard audio CDs as well as the MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) files that you've recorded to CD-Rs and CD-RWs, letting you enjoy more than 20 hours of digital audio from one CD (or around 250 songs). Plus, Rio Volt's large backlit LCD supports ID3 ... ...listening almost anywhere. While the Rio Volt is the first portable CD player in the family of Rio digital audio players, the manufacturer was thinking ahead: the device supports firmware upgrades to accommodate future digital audio formats.
Amazingly, the Rio Volt sports a playback time of up to 15 hours on two AA batteries (included), making it the first disc player we know of that can't play a single CD in its entirety. Don't fret, however--you'll ...

Advantages: Cheap, good quality output Disadvantages: None for the price
This beast can play both MP3s and standard CDs, but most people will buy it for MP3 playback. Skipping is no problem - the track is read into memory, so this player is ideal for use in-car with a cassette adaptor.
I use the SP-90 with Beyer Dynamic headphones and it sounds way better than through the supplied headphones.
An immediate improvement in functionality can be obtained by downloading the SP-100 firmware, editting the first few bytes to ... ...the resultant file to a blank CD. Insert this CD into the player (with a new set of batteries or mains adaptor in use) and swith on. Within a minute the player with have the facilities of the SP-100 player, except for the backlight.
I found my SP-90 on TigerDirect as 'refurbished' for well under £50. Go get one now! ...

Advantages: None Disadvantages: Battery Life and Cd recognition
After accumulating 100s of CD's over the past few years i decided it was time to get an Mp3cdplayer, so i wouldnt have to haul around all my favourite cd's in a carry case, i could compile them all onto just a few CD-r's and carry them around,
The Argos catalogue had a few mp3cd players at the time, and this Rio-Volt was the one which i finally opted to go for, costing me around £100 with batteries and headphones included,
The Cd player managed to work fine to my expectations for the first few weeks, selecting tracks and recognising Title name and ID3 tags quickly and readily. IT was after this that the battery life within the CD player started to slip, Good quality batteries would only last a day or so (not with extended use!).
To add to this, the Cd-r's were sometimes no longer being recognised, and i would have to take ...
To tell the truth i actually recieved this perosnal CD player in the mail when i switched bank accounts and thought that i wouldnt have much use for the product, but i now find myself increasingly using this over my trusty Diamond Rio PMP 300 Mp3player.
The product is very minimal for a personal CDplayer, with just room for the CD, no extra space like with a square design. This circular design also allows it to fit into smaller spaces more easily.
It has the basic features that a CD player should have like repeat, play and pause, no extra features that could take up extra space. It has a very small screen located on the top left hand corner that displays only the needed information such as track length and any features in use.
The CD player is albe to host a number of different headphone designs, even those ones on airlines ...

Psychologically I beat myself up daily. You see, two of my personality traits are in direct opposition:
Firstly, I love the latest technology.
Secondly I love a bargain.
Faced with this dilemma I'm never quite able to keep up with technology or, I'm never quite able to get a bargain. MP3 players are really the most difficult product to buy into with these personality traits.
I have a cheap CD walkman and enjoy it ... it sounds OK and does the job of getting music to my ears. However, it is quite large and clunky looking compared to MP3 players and it does only hold the CD that I put in it ... to MP3 or not to MP3 that is my question.
Fortunately I recently had a try before you buy (or not) experience when a colleague lent me his Diamond Rio. So, will I be buying or not ... to understand my decision read on.
